We all have a bit of a crush on AR pistols, assault pistols, call them what you will…

The Palmetto State Armory Jakl is a response to the new pistol regulation that does away with the pistol buffer.

We have seen similar designs, but this is by far the cheapest monolithic upper receiver layout we can find.

The PSA Jakl is a new arrival, but expect it to make a big impression on this semi auto pistol in these troubled times.

2. Radical Firearms RPR

Best Entry Level Pistol

Radical focuses on value for money and the first reviews of this revised AR-style pistol suggests that the build quality belongs to a much more expensive firearm.

Cheap and Cheerful Pistol

Not everybody loves PSA firearms, and they are not the absolute best on the planet. But the PSA AR-15 pistol is exceptional value.

Plastic, Lightweight & Cheap

That price is not a typo. The ATI Omni Hybrid P4 is a cheap, lightweight semi automatic pistol with one small catch: the receivers are made of polymer.

Fiber reinforced polymer to be precise, which ATI has proven in the field by driving a forklift truck over the it, and firing 2000 rounds through several of them as a public endurance test to prove the concept.

Material science is heading that way, plastics have to leave metal behind at some point and ATI says that point is now.

With lightweight pistol braces, these are great guns.

Underrated Value Package

The Banshee Mk4 is one of those guns you can buy in basically every caliber, from 9mm Luger through to armor piercing 5.7. Here we opted for the 5,56 NATO.

A Radial Delayed Blowback system, originally designed for 45 ACP, is finally there after some initial problems and fine tuning. Now this offers softer recoil thanks to a reduced bolt mass.

The American built Banshee Mark 4 doesn’t just come in every caliber. It comes in every color. Tungsten Grey, Burnt Bronze cerakote finish, maybe Midnight Bronze, or Armor Black Nitride. They got em all.

Is it even a 5.56 NATO AR-15 pistol at this point? Well probably not technically, but it is an exceptionally lightweight AR-15 alternative.

You get a 10 round mag capacity and it was designed for target shooting and hunting. That means it’s a solid, reliable weapon with a longer barrel that always counts for something, especially in a truck gun. It looks like a DIY pistol build, done well with a matte black finish.

And this is different enough that you could easily have this as well as a growing collection of cheap AR15 pistols.

And Here’s Where the Prices Go a Bit Nuts

Here’s the deal. All these guns below were around $1000. But prices have crept up or spiked, temporarily or permanently beyond the mid-length. Until the dust settles and we know, we’re keeping them here.

Just don’t swear at us. These guns are more expensive, or just aren’t there right now, and we hope to find cheaper examples soon. Until then, if you really want a specific gun, here they are. Break out the good credit card…

9. Foxtrot Mike Products FM15

Top Budget CQB

These Foxtrot Mike AR15 pistols are cheap at the range, they’re lightweight, the ammo is tailored to self defense and you can easily run them suppressed.

The difference between 9mm and 5.56 isn’t quite as big as you think in terms of terminal ballistics. But it does make a huge difference when it comes to being easy to carry. Especially with the naked buffer tubve and no stabilizing brace.

AR9s are lighter, smaller and generally better in every way as a personal defense weapon.

10 Springfield Armory Saint Victor

I seriously love the Springfield Armory Saint AR15 pistol and it has features on the page before, many times, but it was always a bridesmaid thanks to its budget price.

Here, that’s the main thing, so it was always going to do well. At least it will, if the price goes down again…

That $1000 caveat played perfectly into its hands. At that price, it was one of the best AR-15 pistols in the world. You could easily make a case, but at $1,200 it runs into some serious competition and pretty much disqualifies itself here in the AR pistols under $1000 category.

The Springfield Armory Saint pistol always faces down the heritage of the Colt M4 or the cut-price perfection in the $1000 AR-15 rifle for sale class.

It’s as specced out as AR15 pistols reasonably can be and most of the science went on materials and coatings and the buffer tube. We like that.

11. Rock River Arms LAR-15

The American built Rock River Arms LAR-15 semi auto pistol is about as complete a 5.56 NATO AR-15 pistol as you’re going to see for this money.

The company provides duty-grade tools to law enforcement agencies, including the DEA and FBI. Of course those are beyond home defense.

Still, the consumer line has won plaudits around the nation and it’s just hard to make a case against owning one of these semi auto pistols.

12. Sig Sauer LT Spear

• Special Price: $2,499.99

The US military has adopted the Sig Sauer LT Spear that offers 5.56 NATO, 300BLK and 7.62x39mm, depending on the task at hand.

And ithe semi auto pistol is worth the extra money if you have it. But it’s a LOT of extra money, before you start on new muzzle brakes and accessories for that M-Lok Handguard…

It’s new, too, so gun deals aren’t that common.

Are There California Legal AR Pistols?

There are specific approved Franklin Armory single shot AR pistols that can be considered California legal, basically you register the single shot pistiol and then change the upper for a semi legal handgun.

That’s what most people do.

Alternatively private transfers of weapons registered before the Assault Weapons legislation banned them are ok.

You need to pin the mag, by the way, to keep it California legal.

So although there are California legal AR pistols, we don’t really want to get into the fineries of gun laws here. California legal is a fluid term, we think.

New York, New Jersey and more States besides are pretty close honestly…

What’s the news on Stabilizing braces and the ATF?

Please ensure you are familiar with amendments to the National Firearms Act for weapons shorter than 16 inch barrel length and all other gun laws. We just can’t give legal advice to the whole nation here, Federal law, State law, another Federal Law, we can’t keep up. So do your due diligence when it comes to personal defense.

Basically the likes of the SBA3 Brace, PDW braces and many more besides were turned into an NFA item overnight by the ATF.

The whole thing is going through the courts right now and at the moment it seems to be an unenforceable and unconstitutional attempt at a rights grab.

We recommend stripping any SBA3 brace or equivalent stabilizing braces for the moment while this all plays out in court. Or buy the monolithic type of AR pistol that has been designed around the regs.
