  • Action: Folding
  • Length: 5.3 inch (Closed)
  • Blade Length: 3.9 inch
  • Weight: 5 Oz

Material Science Makes the best Pocket Knife Better

The clip point blade shape on these folding knives is a CPM S35VN steel blade. Crucible Industries claimed credit for a steel that has consistently been called the best knife steel in the industry.

The corrosion resistance, edge retention, machinability, durability and outright toughness of CPM S35VN steel is legend and some of the biggest names have adopted it.

For a folding pocket knife, this is cutting edge tech and elite material science.Inevitably it’s a step beyond the CPM S30V stainless steel blade that preceded it and that stuff could hold an edge. CPM S30V wasn’t bad, but this is better.

A combination of Chrome Moly Vanadium, Niobium and Carbon set a new standard for a high quality sharp blade. Plain and simple, it’s a mark of quality on any knife.

This drop point blade shape also gets a black cerakote finish so you can handle heavy duty work right through to fishing with this workhorse.

Even the branded pocket clip that means this lightweight knife is always ready to go and also looks the part.

Benchmade Osborne Carbon Fibre folding knife. A great gift or an EDC knife that should last forever.

2. Benchmade Osborne Carbon Fiber

  • Price: $315.00
  • Action: Folding.
  • Length: 4.15 inch (Closed)
  • Blade Length: 3.4 inch
  • Weight: 3.46 Oz

This pocket knife is functional art, effective self-defence and the carbon fiber gives it a truly unique look.

With a reverse Tanto blade that is ideal for piercing and a thin, full belly for slicing, this knife is a tactical defense knife and it’s great for general outdoors stuff. An ambidextrous thumb stud opener brings the S9OV steel out in one fluid motion and there’s an AXIS locking mechanism.

All Purpose Pocket Knife That’s Oh So Elegant

Diamond Like Carbon finished steel liners protect the blade and an AXIS locking mechanism keeps it in place when you’re focused on the task at hand and the super sharp blade. That’s a liner lock, just about every kind of lock and you can see the it in action here.

The adjustable pocket clip point is no parts bin trash either…

You might prefer to go with the Benchmade Bugout, which is cheaper and comes with the same good stuff. They can still be expensive knives, but you can get cheaper ones that are a great choice.

The Benchmade Bugout tops out at $750, but it starts at around $100 and you can find the cheap knives here. The Benchmade Mini Griptilian is further down, too, and that’s little carry pocket knife you need in your life.

Is it too pretty? Too much for a pocket knife? Well that’s for you, but you can get simpler designs and lesser prices. Check the full line of Benchmade pocket knives here.

They got folding knives, fixed knives, everything really, and the knife reviews are stellar. We really like the MIni Griptilian, which you’ll find further down the list.

The Gerber Ghostrike is a lightweight knife with a fixed blade that works exceptionally well asa n EDC

3. Gerber Ghostrike Fixed

  • Price: $37.99
  • Action: Fixed
  • Length: 6.9 inch
  • Blade Length: 3.3 inch
  • Weight: 3.6 Oz

You don’t need to spend the Earth to get a custom look and feel. This pared down small knife from industry giants is designed for concealed carry and defensive duties. It’s tailored to the job and might be the best budget option.

It comes with a modular sheath system that can adapt to CCW or open carry duties if you’re out in the wild. You can also choose horizontal or vertical carry for your every day carry fixed blade knife. That polymer scabbard comes with belt loops, a pocket clip point, just about everything.

This knife is lightweight thanks to that skeletonized handle and 420HC stainless steel blade. It’s not top end, but these are high-quality materials. The end result is a classic drop point blade with some clever notches and cutters.

Skeletonized Grip Coated With Rubber

The rubberized grip is all you need and that clever piece of ergonomic design means your knife will lie flat and not print. For EDC knives, that’s a really big deal.

Gerber knives for sale are always top quality, reasonably priced for what they are and some of the world’s greatest explorers rely on their hardware in the wild.

You can’t really go wrong with a Gerber knife and this is a great buy.

CRKT Provoke is a Karambit knife with a simple manual opener.

4. CRKT Provoke

  • Price: $199.99
  • Action: Folding
  • Length: 4.96 inch (Closed)
  • Blade Length: 2.41 inch
  • Weight: 6.1 Oz

The talon point of the CRKT Provoke just looks cruel and dangerous. It’s single-minded, which is fine if you’re looking at purely defensive EDC knives.

Use it how you want, but there’s no doubt the inspiration was an Indonesian karambit fighting knife and it has kept that spirit to this day.

It also has that clever kinematic technology. That unique hinge means the knife flips out with a nudge, but these are still folding knives under manual power. That’s important in lots of places…

Now you’d have to develop insane skills to really utilize that tantalizing thumb hole in the handle without slicing off your own digits.

You might just choose to use the thumb hole as an attachment point instead for deep carry.

This dude shows how it’s done, but don’t try this at home etc…

Benchmade Infidel OTF automatic knife. Get yours here.

5. Benchmade Infidel Out The Front

  • Price: $420.00
  • Action: Automatic
  • Length: 5 inch (Closed)
  • Blade Length: 3.91 inch
  • Weight: 4.9 Oz

Again this is an assisted opening Out the Front knife and they can be very illegal as EDC knives in some States. If they’re not, though, then this is a great pocket knife and one you should really consider if funds allow.

This is a double action OTF knife, which results in a butter smooth, reliable and durable mechanism. That double edge spear point blade is D2 steel and the machined T6 aluminum handle saves weight and creates a balanced and great knife.

After machining, that aluminum gets a black anodized finish for the nth degree of protection.

The Best Knife For The Money?

This isn’t really a multi-tool. It’s a defensive knife that goes alongside a concealed carry pistol in your IWB holster set-up. The pocket clip is solid, and the whole out the front knife is perfectly engineered.

It can sit loose in your pocket, with your safe in the knowledge this is quality engineering with a liner lock and frame lock.

However you stow your everyday carry knife, this is one of the best when it comes to pocket knives for self defense. If you need to go smaller, keep scrolling for the Benchmade Mini.

Victorinox Swiss Army Hunter XT knife. Get a multi tool in a convenient package and a blade that shouldn't let you down.

6. Swiss Army Knife Hunter XT

  • Price: $54.99
  • Action: Folding
  • Length: 4.37 inch (Closed)
  • Blade: 3.75 inch
  • Weight: 9.0 Oz

This knife has evolved into a whole line, a vast number of specialist multi-tools, survival knives and even one or two solid defensive EDC knives. But this Victorinox Swiss Army Knife Hunter XT looks like it could be a useful multi tool.

This knife isn’t really meant to replace anything else here. But it could go in a pack, or loose in your pocket, as just a useful thing out in the field. Multi-tools can be much more complex and better equipped, but do you need a toothpick or a bottle opener really?

You get a hand-locking blade, a serrated gut hook, a bone saw and a screwdriver. These are versatile tools for fisherman, hunters and outdoors types and work well with hunting knives. That’s all contained in a fiberglass reinforced nylon shell.

Small pairs of scissors, a bottle opener and half the other crap in the increasingly bloated Victorinox flagship muti-tools just aren’t necessary. This is a nice thing to have, though, and will pay for itself many times over that one time you need it the most. It’s a good pocket knife for general cutting tasks.

Most blades have gone beyond a nail nick and offer thumbhole blade open system, which is easier in a pinch. A nail nick blade open approach is fine for a kid in the field, not so much if you’re trying to cut a victim out of a burning car.

For the full line of multi-tools and knives, check here.

Sog Kiku Folding knife. A great knife for everyday carry.

7. Sog Kiku XR

  • Price: $189.95
  • Length: 8.6 inch
  • Blade: 4 inch
  • Weight: 7.4 Oz

In some ways this is as simple as knife technology gets. The classing folding pocket knife, which SOG has somehow turned into next level engineering, art and a potential life-saver jangling alongside your keys.

SOG’s VG-10 blade steel is a science lesson in itself. The Studies and Observations Group’s seemingly simple metal blade has drawn on the very best from the aerospace and material science fields in a quest for the knife for life. It’s an easy deep carry too.

The VG-10 knife steel blade is solid, big and inevitably razor sharp enough to shave a gnat’s ass. The handle material is lightweight linen color Micarta and the two separate grips are screwed directly on to that solid stainless steel spine. There’s a straightforward frame lock there too.

SOG worked with acclaimed knife designer Kiku Matsuda to create this knife for sale. The custom Tanto blade profile, handle grinds and G-10 handle scales are Matsuda trademarks.

Micarta offers near perfect grip in wet conditions and this full tang handle is a work of art in its own right. The whole knife is just cool, we love their stainless steel and it’s a good knife that will earn its place next to your gun.

Smith & Wesson First Response Drop Point knife on sale now.

8. Smith & Wesson First Response

  • Price: $24.99
  • Action: Folding
  • Length: 4.25 inch Closed
  • Blade: 3.4 inch
  • Weight: 3.5 Oz

Not everybody wants to inflict maximum damage on an attacker. Some people want a multi-purpose EDC pocket knife that is as much a tool as a weapon. Law enforcement officers and EMTs are regular customers.

A lot of them carry the Smith & Wesson First Response as a pocket knife. Multi-tools, too, and survival knives for everyday carry. But this budget knife is a staple.

EDC knives costing just north of $20 wouldn’t normally be considered custom. But this is Smith & Wesson, one of the greatest firearms manufacturers. It might be cheap and just 4.25 inches long, but this compact EDC is a giant.

Knife Features Include Belt Cutter

This knife comes loaded with features, including an emergency glass breaker and a seatbelt cutter.

At this price you won’t get the smoothest ball bearing action. And the blade steel isn’t mixed and folded by a Nobel prize winner. It’s basic stuff. But you do get one hand opening via the thumb disc. You also get a variety of cutting options that will help with practical, everyday carry situations.

This is a good knife that won’t last a lifetime, but it doesn’t have to. It will sit alongside your concealed carry pistol and do its duty, then you can buy another. In this price range, a high quality sharp blade and a few extra tools is more than you can really ask for, but it’s here.

Zero Tolerance Flipper knife. Get yours today.

9. Zero Tolerance KVT Folder

  • Price: $196.00
  • Action: Flipper
  • Length: 4.25 inch Closed
  • Blade: 3.4 inch
  • Weight: 3.5 Oz

The stainless steel blade gets a coat of Blackwash that goes across the material too and you have to admit this Zero Tolerance flipper knife is a thing of beauty.

It’s a Diamond-like Carbon Finish (DLC) on the blade steel that gives this knife years of corrosion resistance and much stronger edge retention thanks to the magic of carbon steel. Also, it makes your everyday carry look kinda badass.

An open back design comes with stainless steel liners, a pocket clip on the rear and a weighty frame that feels just right in the hand. The ergonomics on this everyday carry pocket knife are second to none and you can open it fast and smooth thanks to the ball-bearing assisted flipper mechanism.

10. Spyderco Paramilitary 2

  • Price: $185.50
  • Action: Folding
  • Length: 7.24 inch closed.
  • Blade: 3.4 inch
  • Weight: 3.9 Oz

The Spyderco Paramilitary is a legend in the outdoors community. This simple folding knife comes with a split liner, compression lock and a lot of history.

Essentially the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 is the cut down civilian version of the full-size military folding knives that soldiers love. A military seal of approval is a big deal for us with firearms. So we like to stay logically consistent.

A best-selling knife despite the price tag, the Spyderco Paramilitary 2 comes with a CPM 30SV stainless blade with excellent edge retention and corrosion resistance, a bushing pivot for one-handed opening and a compression lock. Just read the knife reviews yourself, they’re awesome.

The digital camo on the G-10 handle scales isn’t for everybody, but you can get other versions of this legendary knife. There’s a Spyderco Para for just about everybody, when it comes to blade shapes and finishes.

Now the Spyderco Para 3 is a small blade version with a stubbier blade shape. The best small pocket knife has other concessions to civilian life, including a deep carry clip. Check out the Spyderco Para 3 here.

Microtech Combat Troodon. The knife that John Wick wields to devastating effect in John Wick 2. Buy your cutlery, now.

11. Microtech Combat Troodon

  • Price: $494
  • Action: OTF Automatic
  • Length: 5.3 inch closed.
  • Blade: 3.8 inch
  • Weight: 5.8 Oz

What knife did Jon Wick use in the movie is a question I have answered elsewhere in a post that covers the guns of John Wick Chapter 2, but it’s a popular Google term and people want this knife, so here it is.

Check your local knife laws carefully before following in the stab marks of John Wick, though, because this is an OTF automatic knife and that can be an issue.

Play safe with the law, it’s just not worth getting this wrong and automatic knives are increasingly frowned upon. It’s hard to beat an automatic OTF knife for personal defense, though, is the thing.

If you can carry one of these in your area, then it kicks ass and it’s worth every cent.

That blade flies out into place faster than you could dream of thanks to the thumb slide opening mechanism and this is a pure combat knife that is perfectly suited to self defense and knife fights with rival hitmen on trains. Because that probably happens in your world too….

Heavy Knife, But The Weight is a Weapon in Itself

It’s a heavier knife, but that weight is reassuring in the hand when you need it most and it’s just a couple of ounces extra to carry round when you don’t need it.

If this knife sits alongside a 1lb concealed carry handgun then you’ve given yourself the best possible chance of getting through the day alive without feeling inconvenienced along the way.

Seriously, if a self defense kit is good enough for John Wick, it should be enough for you and me. Check out the guns of John Wick 3 here when you’re done, and then the guns of John Wick 2.

The handle material is solid and lanyard loop contain a carbon steel glass breaker, which is a handy addition and turn the Microtech into a useful tool in the urban jungle at least. It won’t stand up as well if you’re taking it hiking, but in terms of self defense you will not do better than the Microtech Troodon Combat.

Cold Steel AD-15 folding everyday carry knife. A great little tool that works defensively, and also for those 1000 everyday tasks.

12. Cold Steel AD-15 Folding Knife

  • Price: $229.99
  • Length: 5 inch (Closed)
  • Blade length: 3.5 inch
  • Weight: 6.5 Oz

Cold Steel has a reputation for producing custom knives for a mass manufacturer price tag.

The Cold Steel AD-15 is certainly at the top of the price band for a folding 3.5 inch drop point blade shape, but still this is worth every cent. Again, this is the production version of the Andrew Demko custom knife.

So now you can afford one of these Cold Steel skeletonized knife special editions with a small drop point steel blade and ambi thumb studs. It’s a small knife, but Cold Steel have got bigger ones for you.

You get a Demko Scorpion lock, which is a pretty advanced locking mechanism. Then there is a reversible pocket clip, a G10 grip and ambidextrous thumb stud for left handed or right handed operation.

You also get the same steel as the best Cold steel knives. The company has forged an amazing reputation for delivering value for money, edge retention and matching big names on a lesser budget. Trust us, Cold Steel has earned that reputation the right way with its folding knives.

KA-BAR Fighting Utility Knife. A great basic knife that serves the US Marines well, and thousands of americans. Get yours.

13. KA-BAR Fighting Utility Knife

  • Price: $129.99
  • Length: 11.875 inch
  • Blade length: 7 inch
  • Weight: 10.4 Oz

The KA-BAR knife goes together with American defense like the Smith & Wesson revolver, Colt 1911, side-by-side shotgun and the old world bolt action rifles. It is part of American folklore.

KA-BAR started making fixed blades in 1898, with hunting knives and the usual fare. But it really hit the headlines when it won the US Marines contract before World War II. Yeah that was a big one…

All the Soldiers Wanted One…

Soon the whole military wanted these simple yet devastatingly effective fixed blade knives. It’s still massively popular today with explorers, outdoors enthusiasts, hunters and anybody that needs to cut stuff and occasionally save themselves.

These fixed blade knives saved soldiers every single day in the great war. It’s an all-round legend and we like the special editions, too.

Benchmade Mini Griptilian on sale. A great little carry knife that could just save your life.

14. Benchmade Mini Griptilian

  • Price: $114.75
  • Folded length: 3.87 inch
  • Blade: 2.91 inch
  • Weight: 2.68 Oz

The Benchmade Mini Griptilian family fits in alongside the Benchmade Bugout Mini and a lot of other small carry pocket knives. But we’d still probably choose the Benchmade Mini Griptilian.

There’s no thumb stud, a simple frame locking mechanism and this one comes with a Sheepsfoot blade. It’s kind of our favorite Mini Griptilian EDC folding knife at this price point.

The Mini Griptilian line offers you a variety of blade steel, handle scales, colors, just about everything. That glass-filled reinforced nylon handle material comes with liners and the plain edge blade steel hardness of 58-60 HRC steel blade is enough for most tasks.

And the Benchmade Bugout line is waiting if you still feel there’s a gap in your knife collection.

Chris Reeve Sebenza 21 PLain, a great knife to slip in your pocket for when you really need it.

15. Chris Reeve Sebenza 31 Plain

  • Price: $450.00
  • Length: 6.98 inch
  • Blade: 3.61 inch
  • Weight: 4.7 Oz

Chris Reeve has brought an obsessive focus to the engineering behind basic knife features. The end result is a titanium frame and handles, ceramic bearings and the best steel in the industry.

This company has become the Pagani or Bugatti of the knife world, or something. This is a new level of high quality for the best EDC knives and you have to see the fit and finish to believe it.

We’re looking forward to more master craftsmen joining the likes of the Chris Reeve Sebenza. Knife enthusiasts pore over these details like Swiss watches, or great guns. It’s a great knife.

It’s the same love of engineering, excellence of execution and attention to detail that mark the likes of Chris Reeve and Nighthawk Custom apart. The price point is painful, but nice things cost money.

We know Chris Reeve is a new name, relatively speaking, but it’s fast marking itself out as a company that makes some of the best knives you can buy in 2023.

Spyderco Tenacious folding knife. A budget knife that looks the part and will serve you well with durable steel.

16. Spyderco Tenacious

  • Price: $65.00
  • Closed length: 4.37 inch
  • Blade: 3.39 inch
  • Weight: 4.1 Oz

The Spyderco Tenacious is a great budget option if the more exclusive knives are out of your price range. The Spyderco Tenacious is a bargain in this company and it punches well above its weight.

The folding Spyderco Tenacious is lightweight, compact and G10 grips mean it’s basically a non-slip knife. 8Cr13MoV blade steel isn’t quite as exotic as some others here, but it does the job for most of us.

We like this little Spyderco Tenacious. And we think you will too. We like the Spyderco Delica, too, but we don’t have space to cover everything here. So the Spyderco Delica can wait for another day.

What is Damascus Steel?

That is Damascus Steel that was created by hammering out Wootz steel from India and Sri Lanka. We still can’t fully replicate that metal to this day and some investigations have found all kinds of madness.

Somehow tungsten, vanadium, naturally formed carbon nanotubes and nanowires helped create the Valyrian steel of the day. They were alloys, folded to perfection by craftsman. In many cases, the recipe died with them.

Damascus Steel is named after the capital of Syria and it was famous for its keen edge and shatter-resistant qualities.

Damascus Steel is Sharp, Flexible and Strong

These were the blades that lopped off limbs with a single swipe in the hands of Arabian noblemen from the 3rd to the 17th Century. It’s super plastic, so it can soak up a shock, and comes with a super sharp cutting edge.

Now we have steels that go beyond the strength and cutting edge of Damascus Steel, but in its day this was the baddest weapon on the block.

In a folding pocket knife, with a modern interpretation of Damascus Steel, well it’s more about the aesthetics than the ability to slice and dice a gladiator. But the durability and the cutting edge are noble qualities that we all kind of look for in a knife.

With the larger blade shapes, you can really indulge yourself with Damascus steel.
