The Maryland School shooting was still a tragedy, but it proved the old adage.
The best defense against a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.
The incident at Great Mills High School in Great Mills, Maryland, will doubtless be used for political capital by the gun control lobby. But the truth is that a good guy with a gun took this kid out with just two casualties.
This could easily have turned into another Florida. But this time the resource officer at the school was armed. A compact handgun saved the day.
It’s a sad world when you have to look at the best tactical solution to a kid going nuts and shooting up the school.
And yet here we are.
Are You Safer With a Gun For Protection?
With two clear, recent examples, it looks like having good people with guns on the premises works best.
Gun control is not the answer for the US. There are just too many weapons out there, 80% ghost guns are freely available and you can even 3D print a gun that will fire off hundreds of rounds before they fall apart. That’s impossible to legislate, although States are trying.
So banning guns isn’t the answer. Airport style security is one option, but it’s time to look at arming and training teachers or support staff.
It needs to be a good man, or women, with the gun. The wrong people will do more harm than good.
Armed Sheepdogs Work. Armed Sheepdogs Would be Amazing…
But if the right people are armed, then incidents like this can be contained. In Maryland, the shooter succumbed to his injuries.
But nobody else did. And that is a step in the right direction.
