Overall Winner

The Sig Sauer MCX Rattler is simply in a different league. It’s an elite compact in every sense and they are best sellers.

This is military hardware, plain and simple. It was developed specifically for the British SAS, but has found its way into the hands of military personnel, teams, and law enforcement that can afford these short barrel pistols with a 5.5 inch barrel and tri-lug muzzle device.

The flexibility of the new cartridge and their hands is a potent combination and this is clearly the best pistol for close quarters combat.

Now the high quality Sig Sauer MCX Rattler is almost too compact for general plinking and you do have to adapt to it, but this is an absolute thoroughbred of a semi-auto defensive weapon and they are almost concealed carry handguns.

Don’t Forget the New Spear LT

The military is moving to the MCX Spear modular platform where you can switch between calibers and accessories set ups for home defense and long range work with a red dot up top.

You can order a 300 Blackout pistol & rifles, too. But even though that high price, high spec handgun is monolithic and offers a number of technical steps forward, it has not overtaken the short barrel Sig MCX Rattler in the sales charts. Yet…

The Best Pistol on a Budget

Palmetto State Armory has left the super cheap AAC Blackout pistol behind to bring the 6105 monolithic upper receiver with a bufferless system that is fully captured within the monolithic receiver.

Technically this Palmetto State Armory AAC Blackout pistol is a hybrid of an AR and AK pistol with a long stroke gas piston design, Carpenter 158 bolt and 4340 bolt carrier group.

Palmetto State Armory Spec is Solid

It’s a Chrome Moly Steel barrel with a 1:8 twist rate attached to forged 7075 T6 aluminum receivers that get hardcoat anodized for durability. It’s a Mil-spec style trigger, whatever that is, and it’s a single stage trigger that works well.

There’s a free float rail system and M-LOK Handguard, and PSA will sell you a world of AR15 parts & accessories. From a complete upper for an AR-15 rifle through to a folding stock for your Jakl, they got it all.

It’s all decent and you can fit a pistol stabilizing brace, or not, and red dot sights. The company does a great AR-15 and 308 Win Mag semi automatic rifle too. They’re all best sellers for good reason. Mostly price…

3. CMMG Dissent Mk4 300 BLK

The pistol brace ban has forced manufacturers to look at their pistol layouts. In many cases, a monolithic upper receiver was the answer and the CMMG Dissent Mk4 300 BLK is one of our favorites.

Weighing in at just 4.6lb, with no buffer or brace, this CMMG Dissent Mk4 AAC Blackout semi-auto pistol are basically concealed carry handguns with that 6.5 inch barrel, no brace and side charging handle. That’s why we love the Dissent 300 BLK with its accurate 6.5 inch barrel.

Now you can still get the CMMG Banshee with an external buffer tube. And the CMMG Banshee is much cheaper, although the complete upper isn’t as neat and you have that buffer to deal with.

4. Radical Firearms RF Forged Pistol

Best Cheap Pistol

Radical Firearms produces some of the finest cheap guns for sale that less money can buy. Now normally they’re cheaper than this, but these are weird times and relatively this is still a good price.

These Blackout pistols comes with a longer barrel profile than the specialist CQBs here, but that’s good for accuracy without expensive engineering. So if you’re looking for long range capability and you don’t have all that much money, well these gun deals work.

Aside from that it’s budget engineering, done well. That 10.5 inch barrel is much more accurate than some of the thoroughbred CQBs here too, and turns this into something approaching semi auto rifle territory. Or at least a Short Barrel Rifle.

The elite compact pistols & rifles won’t feel threatened by Radical’s presence, but a home intruder will. Radical is also known for reliability these days and customers tend to turn into repeat customers because it does the basics well when it comes to personal defense semi automatic pistols.

Fit an SBA3 Tactical Brace to the buffer tube, or a wide variety of alternatives.

5. Maxim Defense PDX SPS

• Price: $2,065.99
• Caliber: 300 Blackout
• Barrel: 5.5 inch
• Pistol length: 18.75inch
• Weight: 5.6lb

Maxim Defense made an impressive name with stocks for pistols and rifles. But now it has gone and done this to basically ensure you are safe from the impending pistol brace ban.

There is no pistol brace really, just the Maxim Defense SCW pistol system, but there is room to attach a legal one to the grip later when the legalities get confirmed. For now a PDX version fits just fine.

It looks a lot like a small upper receiver extension to us, and that means this gun is short and can be swung around the house with relative ease. It also sits and pivots more naturally on your hip.

Buy a Pistol Without a Pistol Brace, Definitively

Also, it’s definitely not a shoulder brace, which seems to be useful right now in these vague legal times.

The Hatebrake muzzle device on the 5.5″ barrel joins forces with an ALG Combat Trigger to create a much more accurate short pistol than you might be used to. This is well balanced and also designed to be used with a pistol sling, and maybe a red dot.

Here’s the version with the ‘proper’ pistol brace and a reviewer waxing lyrical over the accuracy and reliability.

Of course you can buy a high quality Maxim Defense pistol brace for other weapons, as the rules stand, in the AR15 parts & accessories store.

6. Diamondback DB15

• Pistol Length: 29.25 inch
• Weight: 6.5lb

The Diamondback Firearms DB15 features on a number of our lists for rifles, pistols etc.

That includes the best budget AAC blackout/AR pistol, best AR-15 pistol for $1000 and more. In long or short form, or chambered in 300 Blackout, this is a great gun.

But this simple AR-style pistol achieves greatness without doing anything truly special at all. The Diamondback DB15 is a solid, mid-range gun with a pistol length gas system, a lick of Nickel Boron coated finish, an M-LOK handguard and a faux suppressor style flash hider.

The Bolt Carrier Group gets a black Nitride finish and everything down to the pistol grip and free float M-LOK handguard is solid. You can add an SBA3 Tactical brace to the buffer tube, or any number of AR15 parts & accessories.

8. Q Honey Badger

The Q Honey Badger started out as a built to order AR pistol for special forces, and then it went on to star in video games.

Now, finally, the civilian version of this Honey Badger 300 Blackout pistol is here.

It is crazy expensive and a truly unique piece of engineering, right down to the cherry bomb muzzle brake and SureFire Bolt Carrier Group.

Now it looks like a mix and match from different manufacturer’s interpretation of Flat Dark Earth, and the M-LOK handguard and receivers don’t match, but the color scheme is a design feature rather than a bug.

As new products go, this is one of the more exciting launches in the sector for a long time and the long rifle options and gun parts & accessories, including suppressors, are pretty great too. Especially if the gun deals are good.

The Mini fix is a bolt action pistol that takes 300 Blackout, too, and that is an intriguing hunting handgun that gives you high performance rifle ammo in a more portable package.

9. Daniel Defense DDM4 PDW

• Price: $1,799.99
• Caliber: 300 Blackout
• Barrel: 7 inch
• Pistol length: 20.75 inch
• Weight: 5.7lb

The Daniel Defense DDM4 in all its forms, rifle, pistol and SBR, taken more honors than the US Olympic team. We simply haven’t found a more compelling package, even now, that can knock this relative veteran off the top spot.

The Daniel Defense DDM4 PDW semi auto pistol is over-engineered for the average consumer. It comes with the upper and lower receiver, CNC machined from billet 7075-T6 aluminum. The finished work then gets a matte black aluminum Type III Hard Coat Anodized finish.

The 4140 hardened steel block comes with adjustable gas and a Heavy Phosphate Coating, together with a pistol length gas system.

The cold hammer-forged barrel is produced from Chrome Moly Steel. It also gets fully HP/MPI tested and then the outside of that is Heavy Phosphate coated. A flash hider sits out front, loud and proud on the end of that 7″ barrel and you get an M-LOK handguard in the parts & accessories list.

Is this Pistol the Complete 300 BLK? Probably Yes

The Daniel Defense DDM4 PDW is arguably the top 300 Blackout AR pistol with heavy-hitting rounds. It features everything you want and nothing you don’t.

You can also dress it with a few different AR-15 parts & accessories, depending on your needs and shooting technique.

Custom gun parts are available pretty much everywhere, but out the box the Daniel Defense is a winner for personal defense. And you can fit a different pistol brace to the buffer tube, or not.

10. Aero Precision DIY Project

• Price Range: $600-1000
• Caliber: 300 Blackout

You’ll struggle to find complete pistols these days, but you can buy pretty much all the parts from Aero Precision for your home build.

These are quality parts and you can buy a complete upper, a slick gas piston system, a choice of trigger guard and all kinds of other options. Do it on stock black, Flat Dark Earth or more adventurous colors.

Build the best concealed carry pistol here, or a beyond mil spec SBR with a higher price tag.

The 300 Blackout cartridge is an art and science, but mainly its subsonic ammunition or supersonic for your ammo storage cans and semi auto handguns & rifles.
