How to Conceal Carry in a Dress: Holsters, Positions, and Wardrobe Hacks

The Dress Carry Problem Nobody Talks About

Concealed carry instruction is overwhelmingly designed around belts. Strong-side IWB, appendix carry, OWB with a cover garment. All of it assumes you have a belt, a waistband with some structure, and pants. The moment you put on a dress or a skirt, the entire standard playbook falls apart.

This is a real problem for women who carry, because dresses are not an occasional wardrobe choice. They’re work attire, formal event wear, summer every-single-day clothing. If your carry solution only works with jeans, you’re unarmed for a significant percentage of your life. That’s not a functional carry plan.

The good news is that dress carry has real solutions. Some of them are genuinely excellent. The Phlster Enigma changed the game for a lot of women. Thigh holsters work better than most people expect. Belly bands adapted for dress carry have gotten significantly better in the last few years. You have options. Let’s go through all of them honestly.

Thigh Holsters: How They Work and When They’re Great

A thigh holster attaches to your upper thigh via elastic straps and holds the gun against the inside of your leg. They sound strange until you wear one, and then they kind of make sense. The gun sits high enough to be covered by most dress hemlines, and the draw is surprisingly fast once you’ve practiced it.

Best thigh holsters use silicone-lined elastic that grips your thigh without cutting off circulation or sliding down. The Garter Holster by Can Can Concealment is the gold standard here. It’s a genuine holster built into a garter-style band, not just elastic with a pocket. The gun is retained properly, not just stuffed into a sleeve.

Thigh holsters work best with A-line and flared skirts/dresses where there’s enough fabric coverage. They’re less ideal with tighter silhouettes where the gun outline shows through. They’re also less comfortable in extreme heat or during a lot of walking, since the band can shift. But for occasions where you’re standing or sitting rather than running marathons, they’re a legitimate carry option.

Draw practice with a thigh holster is non-negotiable. You need to practice the motion of reaching under the hem, finding the gun, and drawing cleanly without sweeping yourself or bystanders. Practice this in the specific dress you plan to wear, because hemline length changes everything. A dress that allows a clean thigh draw in one length might completely block it in another.

Draw requires lifting the dress, which is not the fastest draw in the world but is functional with practice.

The Phlster Enigma: The Significant Upgrade

Phlster Enigma might be the best thing that’s happened to dress carry in the last decade. It’s not a holster. It’s a chassis system that attaches to your Phlster holster (or compatible holster) and holds the entire rig to your body using a harness-style system that goes around your waist and hips. No belt required. At all.

The Enigma positions the gun in the appendix position, inside your waistband, but completely independent of any waistband. The harness wraps around your body underneath your clothing. Under a dress, you wear the Enigma chassis underneath, dress goes on top, and you have a functional appendix carry setup that nobody would ever know was there.

Draw is also the fastest of any dress carry method. Your hand goes under the dress hem, finds the grip, and you draw exactly as you would from appendix IWB with a belt. The mechanics are identical. That means your dry fire practice with the Enigma in pants transfers directly to dress carry. Same draw, same motion, same everything.

It’s not cheap. The Enigma chassis runs about $100-$120, and you need a compatible holster on top of that. But if you carry in dresses regularly, this is the investment that makes your carry consistent across your entire wardrobe. That consistency is worth a lot. It means you don’t have to completely re-learn your draw every time you change clothing styles.

Which Guns Work Best with the Enigma

Enigma works best with compact and subcompact pistols in the Glock 43/43X, Sig P365, Springfield Hellcat, and Smith & Wesson Shield Plus size range. Full-size guns work mechanically but add weight and print more. Under a dress, a Glock 43X or a P365 is the sweet spot: enough gun to be worth carrying, light enough to stay comfortable all day.

Corset Holsters and Bra Holsters

Corset holsters wrap around your torso and hold the gun at chest height, accessible through the neckline or side opening of certain dress styles. They sound impractical until you try one in the right dress. Low-cut or V-neck wrap dresses can work surprisingly well with a chest-height carry position.

Under time pressure, a chest draw can be fumbled badly. If you go this route, practice the draw hundreds of times before carrying live. This is a last-resort option for specific formal occasions where nothing else is workable, not an everyday carry solution.

Bra holsters (gun carried in a holster sewn into the center of a bra) are popular but I have significant reservations about them. The draw requires pointing the gun at your own arm during the initial pull. It’s slow, it’s awkward, and any training that reduces your likelihood of a negligent discharge is good training. Most firearms instructors don’t love bra holsters for this reason. Your mileage may vary.

Purse Carry with Dresses: Last Resort, Done Right

I’ll be honest: purse carry is the solution a lot of women default to with dresses because it’s easy. No special holster, no awkward positioning, your gun lives in the bag. And if the only alternative is being unarmed, purse carry is better than nothing.

But it has real problems. The gun can be separated from you. Kids and thieves can access it. The draw is slow. If you go this route, use a dedicated carry purse with a separate lockable compartment for the gun, never put anything else in that compartment, and practice your draw from the bag. A lot.

Best Guns for Dress Carry

Weight is the most important factor for dress carry. A 28-ounce loaded gun is manageable on a belt with rigid support. Under a dress with an elastic thigh band or a belly band, that same weight is constantly working against you. Lighter is always better for dress carry specifically.

The Sig Sauer P365 at about 17.8 ounces loaded is a go-to for good reason. The Springfield Hellcat is comparable. The Ruger LCP Max in .380 ACP is even lighter at around 10.5 ounces and honestly adequate for most defensive scenarios. If you’re willing to go micro, the Kel-Tec P15 packs 15 rounds of 9mm in a flat, lightweight package that disappears under any holster.

Whatever you carry, it needs to be a gun you’ve actually practiced with. Don’t buy the lightest possible gun and assume you’ll figure it out. Train with your dress carry gun in your dress carry holster, repeatedly, before you rely on it for real.

Wardrobe Hacks That Make Dress Carry Easier

Not all dresses are created equal for carry. A-line dresses and skirts are significantly more carry-friendly than bodycon or pencil silhouettes. The flared skirt provides coverage for a thigh holster or belly band draw without the fabric pulling tight over the gun. If carry is a consideration when you shop, A-line cuts make everything easier.

Wrap dresses are another good choice. The overlapping fabric creates natural coverage and some give in the silhouette. Maxi lengths give you maximum coverage for thigh and belly band positions. Shirt dresses with structure at the waist can work with a belly band if the waistline has enough room.

What to avoid: bodycon, bandage, or very fitted dresses where the fabric clings. Anything that shows your body shape precisely will show a gun outline. Lightweight fabrics like silk or very thin cotton will print more obviously than heavier fabrics like denim, ponte, or structured cotton. Dark or patterned fabrics obscure printing better than solids in light colors.

Layers help. A cardigan, blazer, or kimono over a dress solves a lot of carry problems. It provides coverage for appendix positions that might print without it and gives you options even with fitted dress styles.

Practice Your Draw in What You’ll Actually Wear

This is the rule that separates people who carry competently from people who carry in theory. Your draw stroke with your dress on is different from your draw stroke in jeans. The fabric affects the motion. The holster position affects the motion. The specific dress you’re wearing affects it. You need to practice the combination.

Before you wear any new carry outfit in public, do at minimum 50 dry fire draws at home. Slow and correct first. Build up to realistic speed only after the motion is smooth. Check your muzzle direction during the draw. Make sure you’re not sweeping your own leg, arm, or anything else. Video yourself at least once. You’ll see things you can’t feel.

Women who carry most effectively treat the draw as a skill that must be maintained for every specific outfit and carry setup. It takes maybe 15 minutes to verify a new combination works. There’s no good reason not to do it.
