Quick Take

The SCCY CPX-2 was one of the cheapest new 9mm pistols in America: 10+1 rounds, 15 ounces, a long double action trigger and no manual safety, built in Daytona Beach, Florida. For years it was the gun people bought when $200 was the whole budget.

The detail that changes this review: SCCY Industries is out of business. Volusia County posted tax levy notices on the factory on March 11, 2025, the factory equipment went up for auction that June, and SCCY filed for Chapter 11 on August 1, 2025. Every CPX-2 you can buy now is leftover new stock or a used gun, and the company that stood behind its warranty is in bankruptcy court.

We put 500 rounds through a CPX-2 Gen 3. It worked, mostly, and it’s easy to conceal. At a used price under $200 it’s still a gun that goes bang. But with no factory support and parts that will only get harder to find, we’d spend $50 more on a current gun from a company that’s still open.

Best For: Someone who already owns one, or who finds a new-in-box CPX-2 cheap and buys spare magazines at the same time. Not for anyone who wants a long-term carry gun with a warranty behind it.

What Happened to SCCY

SCCY Industries was formed in 2003 by Joseph Roebuck. According to Wikipedia, the company was going to be called Skyy until trademark concerns with SKYY vodka changed the spelling. CPX-1 production started in 2005, and from 2010 every SCCY pistol was built in a factory in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Timeline of SCCY Industries from its 2003 founding to the March 2025 tax levy, the June 2025 equipment auction and the August 1, 2025 Chapter 11 filing

In 2025 it came apart. Shooting Illustrated reported that the Volusia County Tax Office posted “Pending Levy and Seizure” notices on the factory on March 11, 2025, with $249,932.38 due, and that SCCY’s CNC machines, injection molding machines and lathes were going to auction from June 24 to 26. Its headline sentence was blunt: “SCCY is no longer in business.” SCCY Industries, LLC then filed a Chapter 11 petition on August 1, 2025, in the Middle District of Florida, case 6:25-bk-04877.

What SCCY’s Closure Means if You Own or Buy One

  • Warranty: SCCY’s warranty depended on SCCY. With the company closed and in bankruptcy, don’t count on factory repairs.
  • Magazines: Buy spares now. When the existing stock sells through, CPX magazines will get scarce and expensive.
  • Parts: Springs and small parts will come from leftover inventory and the used market. A gunsmith can handle most repairs, but parts are the limit.
  • Resale: A discontinued budget gun from a closed company won’t hold value. Buy it to use, not to trade.

Manual safetyNone (the CPX-1 has one)

The CPX-2 is the CPX-1 without the external manual safety. It relies on the long, heavy double action trigger instead, and SCCY used a firing pin spring and a low-mass hammer to keep it from firing if dropped. Gen 3 guns and the RDR models, cut for a red dot, were the last versions made.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

  • Anyone who wants a warranty: The company behind it is gone.
  • New shooters: The 9 pound double action trigger is hard to shoot well.
  • Buyers paying $300 or more: Some leftover new CPX-2s are priced above what current, supported guns cost. Don’t pay it.
  • Anyone who wants an optic: Only the RDR models are cut for a red dot, and optic plates and parts will dry up.

How the CPX-2 Compares

Taurus GX4 ($249 to $280)

The Taurus GX4 is the obvious replacement: a micro compact 9mm with 11+1 rounds, a much better striker trigger and a company that’s still in business. It costs about the same as a new CPX-2. See our Taurus GX4 review.

Taurus G2C ($290 to $341)

The G2C is a little bigger with a 12 round magazine and a manual safety. It’s the budget carry gun the CPX-2 used to compete with, and it’s still in production. For more picks in this price range, see our best concealed carry guns under $300.

How We Tested It

Our test gun was a CPX-2 Gen 3 with a black slide and a grey frame and the two factory 10 round magazines. We shot it on two range days in September 2026, 500 rounds total, from 3 to 15 yards.

SCCY CPX-2 Gen 3 RDR with a stainless slide and burgundy frame lying flat on a birch shelf beside a leather belt, a coffee mug and a notepad

Phase 1: Break-In

Two failures to feed in the first 100 rounds, both with 115 grain FMJ, and one failure to lock back on an empty magazine. The trigger is long and heavy, and it measured 8.8 pounds on our gauge, right in the 8.5 to 9 pound range.

Phase 2: Reliability

After that it ran clean through 400 more rounds, including 100 rounds of hollow points. It’s not as forgiving as a Glock or a Taurus GX4, and it ran best with 124 grain ammo and a firm grip.

Phase 3: Accuracy

At 7 yards, standing, five-shot groups ran 2.6 to 3.8 inches. The long trigger pull is the limit. Slow down and stage it, and the groups tighten up.

Ammunition Log

Federal American Eagle 124 gr FMJ2003.1 in.One failure to lock back
Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr FTX503.0 in.Fed fine
Federal HST 124 gr502.6 in.Best accuracy

What This Means for You

If you already carry a CPX-2, run your carry ammo through it, keep it clean, and buy spare magazines and a spring kit while you still can.

Performance Results

Reliability (7/10)

Three stoppages early, then 400 clean rounds.

Accuracy (6/10)

About 3 inches at 7 yards. The trigger holds it back.

Concealment (9/10)

At 15 ounces and 1 inch wide, it carries easily.

Value (5/10)

Cheap to buy, but you’re buying a gun with no factory behind it.

Technical Deep Dive

Double Action Only With an Internal Hammer

Every pull of the CPX-2 trigger cocks and releases an internal hammer. That’s why it’s long and heavy, and it’s also why SCCY didn’t think it needed a manual safety. The upside is a second strike if a round doesn’t fire. The downside is that a 9 pound pull is hard to shoot accurately fast.

Gen 3 and RDR

The Gen 3 guns were the last update before production stopped, and the RDR versions were cut for a red dot.

Upgrades Worth Making

  • Spare magazines: The most important purchase, while they’re still around.
  • A recoil spring kit: Springs wear, and replacements will get harder to find.
  • A holster that covers the trigger: See our best pocket holsters.

Common Problems and Fixes

  • Failures to feed early: Run 200 rounds and try 124 grain ammo.
  • Failure to lock back: Check the magazine follower and spring, and replace worn magazines.
  • Factory repair: SCCY closed in 2025. Use a local gunsmith.

Final Verdict

The SCCY CPX-2 did what it promised for a long time: a cheap 9mm with 10+1 rounds that a lot of people carried. Ours ran 500 rounds with three early stoppages, and it’s small and light.

The problem isn’t the gun, it’s the company. SCCY is closed, its factory equipment went up for auction, and it’s in Chapter 11. At the $250 to $390 that leftover new CPX-2s cost at Guns.com, a Taurus GX4 or a Diamondback DB9 is the better buy. A used CPX-2 under $200 is a fair backup gun if you stock up on magazines.

Final Score: 6/10. A decent budget gun that lost its maker.

FAQ: SCCY CPX-2

Is SCCY out of business?

Yes. Shooting Illustrated reported in May 2025 that SCCY is no longer in business, and SCCY Industries, LLC filed a Chapter 11 petition on August 1, 2025, in the Middle District of Florida.

Is the SCCY CPX-2 still worth buying?

Only cheap. A used CPX-2 under $200 is a fair backup gun if you buy spare magazines. At $250 or more, a Taurus GX4 or Diamondback DB9 is the better buy.

Will SCCY honor its warranty?

Don't count on it. The company is closed and in Chapter 11, so factory repairs aren't something to plan around. Use a local gunsmith.

Is the SCCY CPX-2 reliable?

Ours ran 500 rounds with three stoppages, all in the first 100. It ran best with 124 grain ammo and a firm grip.

What is the difference between the CPX-1 and CPX-2?

The CPX-2 has no external manual safety. The CPX-1 has one. Both are 9mm, double action only, 10+1.

How heavy is the SCCY CPX-2 trigger?

The double action only trigger takes 8.5 to 9 pounds. Ours measured 8.8 pounds.

How many rounds does the CPX-2 hold?

It holds 10+1 rounds of 9mm and shipped with two 10 round magazines.

Where was the SCCY CPX-2 made?

In Daytona Beach, Florida. SCCY built all its pistols there from 2010 until it closed.
