Why Trust USA Gun Shop

Last updated April 2026 · By Nick Hall, USA Gun Shop founder and lead reviewer

Why should you trust USA Gun Shop? It’s a fair question. Online firearms content is dominated by two patterns: thinly-disguised advertorial that exists to push affiliate revenue, and AI-generated articles that confidently cite statutes that don’t exist. We’re neither. This page documents what we do differently and the practices that back the editorial we publish.

We’ve Been Doing This Since 2017

USA Gun Shop launched in 2017 with the same mission we have today: helping firearm owners make informed decisions through honest reviews, comprehensive state-law guides, and clear coverage of the federal regulatory framework. Nine years and 5,000+ published articles later, we’re one of the longest-running independent firearms-content sites on the web.

Editorial continuity matters. Our state-law guides aren’t one-shot articles published once and abandoned. Our 50-state gun-law index is updated continuously as states amend their statutes. Our store-by-state directory is verified through Google Places + dealer websites + occasional direct contact. Our gun reviews include date-stamps for the testing range time, not just the publication date.

We Test the Guns We Review

Hands-on testing is the dividing line between a real review and a regurgitated spec sheet. Every gun review on USA Gun Shop is built on actual range time. Our standard testing protocol (documented in detail on our How We Test and Review Gear page) includes:

  • Round counts. Minimum 200-500 rounds through the firearm before publication for any reliability claim. We document the exact round count in every review and call out any malfunctions with the specific round number where they occurred.
  • Multiple ammunition types. At least three different ammo brands and at least two different loads (when applicable to the platform).
  • Conditions. Indoor range time for accuracy benchmarks; outdoor range time for ergonomics, draw, and longer-distance evaluation.
  • Disclosure of source. Whether the firearm was retail-purchased, a manufacturer review sample, or a long-term loan is disclosed in the review byline.
  • Failure recording. We record and report every malfunction, light primer strike, failure to feed, or other reliability event. Reviews that find issues say so.

Reviews that report consistent reliability through 200-500 rounds with no malfunctions tell you more than reviews that don’t mention round counts. We tell you the round count, the ammo we used, and what happened.

We Cite Primary Sources

Every state-law guide on USA Gun Shop is built from primary sources: state legislature websites, attorney general opinions, federal regulations, and court rulings. We don’t cite competitor review sites or affiliate aggregators as authority for any factual claim.

Our Fact-Checking Policy documents the specific source hierarchy we follow, the cross-reference rule that requires every numeric claim to be verified against at least two independent primary sources, and the volatility tagging that schedules regular re-verification of time-sensitive claims.

What this looks like in practice: when we cite Texas Penal Code § 9.32, we link to the official Texas Statutes portal at statutes.capitol.texas.gov. When we cite a Sixth Circuit ruling like Beeler v. Long, we link to the published opinion. When we cite Glock G19 specs, we link to glock.com. The links are there so you can verify our claims directly.

We Disclose Affiliate Relationships

USA Gun Shop earns affiliate commission from some of the products and services we link to. This is disclosed explicitly on every applicable page through our standard Affiliate Disclosure. We don’t hide it, we don’t obscure it, and we don’t use the affiliate network to dictate what we write about.

Our editorial process is independent of the affiliate-revenue function. We don’t soften factual statements about products that pay us higher commissions, we don’t omit unflattering specs to keep advertisers happy, and we don’t modify product scores in response to advertiser pressure. When we recommend a product, we recommend it because the testing supports the recommendation, not because the affiliate rate is favorable.

For the full breakdown of our revenue model and the specific affiliate networks we work with, see our How We Make Money page.

We Correct Our Mistakes

Even with rigorous fact-checking, errors sometimes make it through. When they do, we correct them quickly and transparently. Our Corrections Policy documents how we accept correction requests, our response timeline, and how we mark corrected articles for transparency.

The short version: substantive corrections to factual claims get a “Correction” note at the top of the article describing what was wrong, what the correct information is, and the date of the correction. The “last updated” date is bumped on every substantive update. Readers can see how current the content is and know what changed.

If you find an error in any USA Gun Shop article, please contact us. We treat correction requests as a positive contribution to the site, not as adversarial.

Our Author

USA Gun Shop’s primary author and reviewer is Nick Hall, a CCW instructor and lifelong shooter who founded the site in 2017. Nick personally reviews every published article on legal and reference content (state law guides, federal law explainers, statute citations) for technical accuracy. Nick has held a concealed carry permit since 2015, has trained at Gunsite Academy, and competes occasionally in IDPA matches.

Hands-on gun reviews and ammunition testing involve a small team of contributors who follow the testing protocol on our How We Test and Review Gear page. The team has 20+ years combined experience in firearms, hunting, and competitive shooting.

What We Don’t Do

Some things we don’t do, that you should know:

  • We don’t accept paid review samples in exchange for predetermined coverage. A manufacturer who sends us a review sample understands we’ll publish whatever the testing supports, including findings unfavorable to their product.
  • We don’t publish AI-generated articles without human editorial review. AI tools are part of our research process for summarizing primary sources and identifying patterns. They’re not the author. Every published article has gone through hands-on editorial review by Nick Hall or a contributor with the relevant expertise.
  • We don’t fabricate testimonials or invent reviewers. Every named reviewer is a real person. Every quoted user testimonial is verified.
  • We don’t republish press releases as editorial. Manufacturer announcements and press releases are clearly identified when we cover them; we don’t pass them off as our own analysis.
  • We don’t use clickbait headlines or false-promise SEO tactics. Our titles describe what the article actually covers.
  • We don’t sell or share reader data with third parties beyond the standard analytics and affiliate-link tracking documented in our Privacy Policy.

Independent Verification

You don’t need to take our word for any of this. Verify our work by:

  • Following the citations. Every state-law claim is linked to the relevant statute or court ruling. Click through and read the source.
  • Cross-checking specs. Every gun review links to the manufacturer’s spec page. Verify our specs against the OEM source.
  • Reviewing our corrections history. Our Corrections Policy page lists significant corrections we’ve made to YMYL articles.
  • Testing claims yourself. If you have access to a firearm we’ve reviewed, run our testing protocol and compare your results to ours.
  • Cross-referencing industry sources. Our state-law guides can be cross-checked against the NSSF Government Relations resource pages and the ATF firearms portal.
  • Consulting a firearms attorney. For YMYL legal questions, our state-law guides are editorial round-ups, not legal advice. Always consult a licensed attorney in your state for any specific question.
