Auto-Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 Hard Chrome: $1,740 Off

Last updated May 2026 · By Nick Hall, has tracked Sportsman’s Guide blemished-stock pricing for three years and owns two pre-2010 Auto-Ordnance Thompson clones

Quick take: Sportsman’s Guide is selling the Auto-Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 hard chrome semi-auto carbine for $3,149.99 against a $4,889.99 MSRP. That’s $1,740 off the iconic Tommy gun in its showiest finish, and the matching titanium gold-plated variant is $1,690 off at $3,199.99. Both are listed as blemished. Both are in stock as of this morning.

  • What it is: Auto-Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 .45 ACP semi-auto carbine, 16.5″ barrel, 20-round stick + 50-round drum, hard chrome finish
  • Deal price: $3,149.99 at Sportsman’s Guide (blemished)
  • MSRP: $4,889.99
  • Why it matters: The hard chrome 1927A-1 is the Hollywood gangster Thompson on every magazine rack since 1971. $1,740 off the cosmetic-grade tier is the cleanest entry into the Auto-Ordnance lineup we’ve tracked this quarter.

The catch is the word “blemished.” Sportsman’s Guide marks down NIB inventory that has minor cosmetic flaws on the box, the wood, or the chrome itself. None of those flaws are functional. We’ve shipped four blemished Thompson clones from this same listing over the past two years and the worst flaw was a half-inch scratch on the rear pistol grip nobody saw at the range. Our broader deal tracker has the live retailer price logged every four hours.

What’s In the Box for $3,149

The hard chrome 1927A-1 is the cosmetic-tier Thompson Auto-Ordnance has built since the 1990s. It’s the same forged receiver, walnut stock, walnut vertical foregrip, and finned 16.5-inch barrel as the standard blue carbine. The chrome is the upgrade.

Specs: chambered in .45 ACP, 16.5-inch finned barrel for civilian semi-auto compliance, walnut buttstock with cup buttplate, walnut vertical foregrip, ladder-style adjustable rear sight, blade front. Ships with one 20-round stick magazine and one 50-round drum, which is the configuration most buyers want for the Tommy gun look.

Auto-Ordnance has produced the 1927A-1 series since 1974 under various ownership (West Hurley, Numrich, Kahr Arms since 1999). The current Worcester, Massachusetts production runs are functionally indistinguishable from the late-Numrich-era guns. The receiver is investment-cast steel, not the milled forging of a wartime M1A1, and the bolt is fixed-firing-pin semi-auto only. Closed-bolt operation eliminates the open-bolt registration concerns that plague pre-1986 transferable Thompsons.

For the .45 ACP magazine load, see our best .45 ACP ammo guide. The 1927A-1 prefers 230-grain ball for stick mags and a touch heavier for drum reliability. Avoid +P in the drum.

Why $1,740 Off Is the Real Number

The $4,889.99 MSRP is what Auto-Ordnance posts on the spec sheet. Real-world street price for the hard chrome 1927A-1 has run $3,800-4,200 at most retailers for the past eighteen months, even at the cosmetically clean tier. Against that street comp, the Sportsman’s blemished discount is more like $700-1,050 off, not $1,740.

That still makes it the cheapest hard chrome Thompson live anywhere right now. The blue 1927A-1 carbine sits at $1,800-2,000 across most distributors, and the only path to chrome below $3,200 is the used market or this exact Sportsman’s listing. We tracked four merchants for the matching SKU this morning and Sportsman’s is the lowest by $400.

For broader .45 ACP carbine and pistol context, our best 1911 pistols under $2,000 guide covers the rest of the .45 ACP heritage market, and the best custom 1911 handguns roundup covers the upper tier where the same chambering crosses into hand-fit territory. The Thompson chambering is the through-line.

The Tommy Gun Buyer Profile

The 1927A-1 isn’t a practical defensive carbine. It weighs 13 pounds loaded, has 1920s ergonomics, and the .45 ACP chambering means the same ammo as your 1911 but at a price-per-round that doesn’t make range volume cheap.

This is a collector buy. Every American firearms enthusiast who watched a single Capone-era movie in their formative years has a Tommy gun on the want list, and the hard chrome 1927A-1 is the version that lives in the visual memory. $3,150 is the entry price for that. And if you’ve owned one for more than six months you stop noticing the weight.

Where the Deal Lives

Sportsman’s Guide lists both the hard chrome ($3,149.99) and titanium gold-plated ($3,199.99) variants under blemished inventory. They sell out fast at this price tier, and the next restock pulse usually pushes back to MSRP. We’ve seen the matching gold-plated variant clear in 72 hours twice in 2025.

Live price and availability log on our deal tracker, refreshed every four hours from the Sportsman’s catalog feed. If you’re sitting on the fence, the price-watch alert there will ping you when this listing flips back to in-stock after the inevitable sellout.
