If you have ever shot a .22 rifle at a tin can, carried a pocket pistol or cocked the hammer on a stainless revolver, there is a good chance it wore the eagle. Sturm, Ruger & Co. is one of the largest gunmakers in America, and it got there by building guns that are rugged and affordable. The 10/22 is the rimfire benchmark, the GP100 is among the strongest revolvers you can buy, the LCP helped launch the pocket-pistol craze, and the new RXM and Harrier show a company on the move. The last two years have changed Ruger a lot. Here is who they are, what they make, and what is worth buying.

Table of Contents

Who Ruger is

Ruger is an American firearms company founded in 1949 in Southport, Connecticut, by Bill Ruger and Alexander Sturm, and now headquartered in Mayodan, North Carolina. It makes rimfire rifles, revolvers, pistols and centerfire rifles, plus the Marlin and Glenfield brands.

The company started in a rented machine shop with one product, the Ruger Standard, a .22 pistol with the looks of a Luger. Alexander Sturm, a young artist, put up the $50,000 in seed money and drew the company’s eagle. The pistol sold for $37.50 and launched the whole business.

Then came the moment that still shows up in collector circles. Sturm died in 1951, at just 28. In mourning, Bill Ruger changed the eagle from red to black, and it stayed black until the 50th anniversary in 1999. Original red-eagle Rugers are prized by collectors because of that small, sad gesture. There is more on Ruger’s official site.

The recent changes matter if you follow the brand. Ruger bought Marlin out of Remington’s bankruptcy in 2020 for about $30 million. On July 1, 2025, it bought the assets of Anderson Manufacturing, including its Hebron, Kentucky plant, while dropping the Anderson brand. Effective January 1, 2026, it moved its headquarters to Mayodan, its biggest site, after more than 75 years in Connecticut. And Beretta Holding built a 9.95% stake, nominated directors, then signed a May 2026 agreement that ended the fight, caps its stake at 25% and gives it a right to nominate up to two independent directors.

Where Ruger sits in the market is easy to summarize: value to mid-tier, and proud of it. A 10/22 runs about $277 and an RXM about $400. The engine behind that is investment casting. In 1963 Ruger opened its Newport, New Hampshire plant and founded Pine Tree Castings, which gave it in-house control of a process most gunmakers farm out.

Ruger is not without controversy. In a 1989 letter to every member of Congress, Bill Ruger proposed banning magazines holding more than 15 rounds, and in 1992 he told NBC’s Tom Brokaw that “no honest man needs more than 10 rounds in any gun”. A boycott followed, and some resentment lingers. He died in 2002, and the modern company sells standard-capacity magazines. It is part of the history, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

What Ruger makes

Rimfire rifles and pistols

This is the heart of the brand. The 10/22, introduced in 1964, is widely called the best-selling .22 rifle in history, and it has a huge aftermarket around it. The Mark IV is a superb .22 target pistol whose one-button takedown fixed the fiddly reassembly of earlier guns, and the Wrangler brought an affordable single-action .22 to the masses.

Revolvers

Ruger is one of the few companies still treating the revolver as a serious product. The GP100, from about $899 in our feed, and compact SP101 are built like bank vaults, the polymer-framed LCR is one of the best modern carry revolvers, and the Redhawk and Super Redhawk handle big magnum hunting loads. On the single-action side, the Single-Six, Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk revived the type after Colt walked away.

Centerfire pistols

The pocket-sized LCP MAX, from about $294, owns the deep-concealment .380 niche. The MAX-9 and Security-9 cover budget carry, and the SR1911 is a lot of 1911 for the money. The big recent arrival is the RXM, a Magpul-collaboration 9mm based on the Gen 3 Glock 19, from about $400, which also uses Glock magazines.

Centerfire rifles

The American Gen II, from about $550, is the value-bolt benchmark, and the Precision Rifle brought the chassis gun to working budgets. The Mini-14 is the ranch rifle, and the PC Carbine is a takedown 9mm. The Harrier is the news: announced at the turn of 2026 and built at the Hebron plant, it replaces the AR-556 family, from about $530. Older pages still point you at the AR-556, so expect leftover stock.

Marlin and Glenfield

Under Ruger, Marlin’s lever-gun line came back from North Carolina, and I think the reborn 1895 and Model 336 are better made than the late-Remington guns. Ruger has also revived Glenfield, Marlin’s old budget label.

Pros

  • Strong guns for the money
  • In-house castings since 1963
  • All built in US plants

Cons

  • Triggers can be heavy or gritty
  • Finish is utilitarian
  • AR-556 retired for the Harrier

Build quality and the investment-casting idea

Ruger’s signature is strength for the dollar, and the reason is manufacturing. Investment casting pours molten steel into precise ceramic molds, which forms complex, strong parts without machining them from billet, and Pine Tree Castings does it in-house. That is why a GP100 frame handles full-house .357 loads and why an American costs what it does. Production runs across plants in Newport, New Hampshire; Mayodan, North Carolina; Prescott, Arizona; and Hebron, Kentucky.

The honest trade-off is refinement. Fit and finish are utilitarian, and the biggest weak spot for decades has been triggers. Stock Ruger triggers are often heavy or gritty out of the box, which is why the aftermarket sells so many trigger kits, springs and BX-Trigger drop-ins. You are buying toughness and value, not a hand-fitted match gun.

How Ruger compares

Against Smith & Wesson, Ruger’s closest rival, the split is classic: S&W revolvers tend to have smoother actions and a nicer finish, while Ruger revolvers are stronger and a bit cheaper. In striker pistols, Glock and SIG Sauer beat Ruger on aftermarket depth and resale, but the RXM goes straight at Glock on price while taking Glock magazines. In bolt rifles, the American competes with Savage and Mossberg on value, while Tikka and Bergara win on smoothness for more money. Ruger rarely makes the single best gun in a category, but it often makes the most gun for the price.

Who should buy what

  • First-time shooter or plinker: a 10/22 or a Wrangler.
  • Glock-curious pistol buyer: the RXM.
  • Everyday concealed carry: an LCP MAX, a MAX-9 or an LCR.
  • Home-defense revolver fan: a GP100 in .357 Magnum.
  • Hunter: an American Gen II, a Super Redhawk or a Marlin 1895.
  • First AR buyer: the Harrier, checked against a PSA or Aero rifle at the same price.

Buy elsewhere if you want a tuned competition trigger out of the box or a premium hand-fitted finish. That is Smith & Wesson Performance Center, Wilson Combat or a custom shop.

The Ruger philosophy

Bill Ruger’s instinct was to look at a category, find the version most people wanted, and build a strong, honest one they could afford. He did it with the .22 pistol, the single-action revolver, the ranch rifle and the budget bolt gun. The RXM and Harrier are the same idea aimed at modern buyers. It is not the flashiest way to build firearms, but it is why the eagle is on so many gun-safe shelves.

How to choose your Ruger setup

Start with the job. For cheap practice and teaching, little beats a 10/22 and a stack of BX magazines. For carry, decide revolver or auto first: an LCR or SP101 if you trust a wheel gun, an LCP MAX or MAX-9 if you want capacity and flatness. For the field, an American covers most hunting. Then budget for what Rugers most reward: a better trigger on the 10/22 and revolvers, and on rifles with integral bases, Ruger’s own scope rings. Check any aftermarket trigger with a safety and function test before you rely on it.

The eagle and the cowboy-gun revival

Two stories explain Ruger better than any spec sheet. The first is the black eagle, a logo that turned dark to mourn a 28-year-old co-founder and stayed that way for nearly half a century. The second is the single-action revolver. By the early 1950s Colt had stopped making the Single Action Army, and the cowboy six-gun looked finished. Bill Ruger watched the country fall in love with TV Westerns and released the Single-Six in 1953, followed by the Blackhawk. That mix of sentiment and shrewd product sense is still the company in a nutshell, even with a new home state and an Italian shareholder.

Ruger FAQ

Where is Ruger based now?

Ruger moved its headquarters to Mayodan, North Carolina, effective January 1, 2026, after decades in Connecticut. Its plants are in Newport NH, Mayodan NC, Prescott AZ and Hebron KY.

Does Beretta own Ruger?

No. Beretta Holding built a 9.95% stake, and a May 2026 agreement caps it at 25% and lets it nominate up to two independent directors. Ruger remains a public company on the NYSE.

The Ruger 10/22, a .22 LR carbine introduced in 1964, is the brand's signature product and is widely called the best-selling rimfire rifle in history.

What replaced the Ruger AR-556?

The Ruger Harrier, announced at the turn of 2026 and built at the Hebron, Kentucky plant Ruger got when it bought Anderson Manufacturing's assets. AR-556 rifles still around are leftover stock.

Why are red-eagle Rugers collectible?

Co-founder Alexander Sturm designed the red eagle and died in 1951 at 28. Bill Ruger changed it to black in mourning, and it stayed black until 1999, so the early red-eagle guns mark the company's first years.

Is Ruger or Smith & Wesson better for revolvers?

Both are excellent. S&W revolvers have smoother actions and nicer finishes, while Ruger revolvers are stronger and a little cheaper. For heavy magnum loads on a budget, Ruger is hard to beat.

What is the catch with Ruger guns?

The main one is triggers and finish. Stock triggers are often heavy or gritty and the finish is utilitarian, which is why the aftermarket sells so many Ruger trigger kits. You are paying for strength and value.

What tier is Ruger?

Value to mid-tier: rugged, over-built guns made in US plants that deliver a lot per dollar, from a $277 10/22 to the premium Precision Rifle, without the polish of premium names.
