The Nine-Lug Legend
Roy Weatherby built his reputation on speed, both in his high-velocity cartridges and in the Mark V action itself. The magnum Mark V bolt has nine locking lugs instead of the usual two or three, which means it only needs to rotate 54 degrees to lock, giving a short, fast bolt throw and a very quick lock time. That fully enclosed bolt face also encases the cartridge head in three rings of steel for strength and safety. Pair that with Weatherby’s sub-MOA guarantee, an adjustable trigger, and a range of stocks from rugged composite to gorgeous walnut to ultralight carbon, and the Mark V is a genuinely premium hunting rifle with an engineering story to match its looks.
How the Mark V Shoots
The Mark V lives up to its billing. The sub-MOA guarantee is real, the fast bolt throw makes follow-up shots quick, and in a Weatherby Magnum chambering it delivers flat trajectories and serious downrange energy for open-country and big game. The trigger on current rifles is excellent. The honest trade-offs are cost and recoil: the premium models are expensive, and the hard-hitting Weatherby Magnum cartridges kick and cost a lot to feed, though standard-caliber and lighter Hunter models tame both. For a hunter who wants a fast, accurate, heritage-rich rifle, the Mark V delivers in a way few others do.

Where to Buy the Weatherby Mark V
The Mark V’s rivals include Weatherby’s own value Vanguard, which uses a conventional action for far less money, and premium hunters like the Christensen Ridgeline and Bergara B-14. The Mark V’s fast nine-lug action and Weatherby Magnum heritage are its signature. Compare live prices below, and see the field in our best hunting rifles guide.
Who Should NOT Buy the Weatherby Mark V
- Budget buyers: Weatherby’s own Vanguard gives you sub-MOA accuracy on a conventional action for hundreds less.
- Recoil-sensitive shooters: the hard-hitting Weatherby Magnum chamberings kick hard. Choose a standard caliber or a lighter cartridge if recoil bothers you.
- High-volume shooters: proprietary Weatherby Magnum ammo is expensive and less common than standard cartridges.
- Tactical/target shooters: the Mark V is a hunting rifle. For a dedicated chassis precision rig, look elsewhere.
The Verdict
The Weatherby Mark V is a premium hunting rifle that earns its price with a genuinely distinctive fast-cycling nine-lug action, a real sub-MOA guarantee, and decades of high-velocity heritage. It costs more than a value bolt gun and the magnum chamberings kick and cost to feed, but the value-priced Hunter model and standard calibers make the legendary action accessible. For a fast, accurate, heritage-rich hunter, the Mark V is special. See how it compares in our best hunting rifles guide, or read our Weatherby Vanguard review for the value sibling.
Our Rating: 8.5 / 10, a fast nine-lug action, sub-MOA accuracy, and real Weatherby heritage.
