Quick Take

The Fierce Reaper H-Tac is a chassis rifle built to be carried. It pairs an aluminum chassis with a folding carbon fiber stock, a carbon fiber handguard and Fierce’s C3 carbon fiber barrel, and Fierce lists it at 6.8 pounds in a short action with a 22 inch barrel. Fierce builds it in Redmond, Utah.

I shot a 6.5 Creedmoor with the 22 inch barrel for 500 rounds. Hornady’s 147 gr ELD Match averaged 0.58 inches at 100 yards, and nothing failed to feed, fire or extract. The brake is loud and the magazine only holds three, but the rifle folds short enough to strap to a pack.

Here’s the catch buyers miss. Fierce has replaced this rifle with the H-Tac 2.0 at $2,699, and the original is what most stores still stock at $2,499. The short answer: the original is still a great buy while it lasts.

Best For: Backcountry hunters who want a precision chassis rifle light enough to hike with, and shooters who want one rifle for steel and elk. Not for bench shooters, who can get the same accuracy for less.

Design Intent: A Tactical Chassis You Can Hike With

Most chassis rifles are heavy. Aluminum and steel make a stiff, repeatable platform, and they weigh it down. Fierce’s answer was to keep the aluminum chassis and custom bedding where it matters, then build the rest from carbon fiber: the folding stock, the forearm, the pistol grip and the barrel.

The action is a precision-machined two-lug design with a 70 degree bolt throw, and the stock folds and locks with a one-piece push-button system. Fierce includes its NIX muzzle brake and 0 MOA bases, so the rifle needs only a scope to hunt. The result sits between a heavy PRS gun and a bare mountain rifle.

Fierce’s lighter sibling, the MTN Reaper, uses a titanium action that Fierce says saves roughly 6 ounces over the H-Tac’s stainless one.

Fierce Reaper H-Tac Variants

The Reaper line has changed in the last year, and retail shelves carry both generations. Here’s what’s what, with prices from September 26, 2026.

Reaper H-Tac, original: aluminum chassis, 6.8 lb SA / 7.0 lb LA, bases included $2,499 list, $2,499 at Sportsman's Guide

Reaper H-Tac 2.0: folding aluminum chassis with C3 carbon stock, 6.5 lb SA, Arca rail $2,699 list

MTN Reaper 2.0: titanium action, 5.8 to 6.5 lb $3,199 list

Reaper H-Tac left-hand: 6.5 PRC, .300 WSM, .280 AI, 7mm BC, 7mm PRC Long action only

What the model names hide. The H-Tac 2.0 costs $200 more than the original and weighs 0.3 pounds less in a short action, and Fierce specs it with a Swiss Arca rail and a TriggerTech Primary set at 2.5 pounds. Fierce’s 2.0 page also puts a 0.5 MOA accuracy guarantee on paper, measured as three-shot groups at 100 yards.

The two are not cross-compatible. Fierce’s own FAQ says the original stock and chassis will not swap onto the 2.0, and upgrading means buying the complete 2.0 chassis kit. Fierce’s product pages also list the .22 Creedmoor twist two different ways on the same 2.0 page, 1:8 in one list and 1:7.5 in the spec table, so confirm with Fierce if twist matters to your bullet.

Left-handers have a real option too. Fierce builds the original H-Tac left-handed in long-action calibers only, and says the 2.0 left-hand is due in late Q3 or early Q4 of 2026.

Competitor Comparison

Light precision rifles are a small, pricey club. Here’s the H-Tac against its closest rivals and its own sibling.

Christensen Arms BA Tactical (from $2,599.99)

The closest match. The BA Tactical also uses a carbon wrapped barrel, but it sits in a fixed carbon fiber composite stock instead of a folding chassis. Christensen lists a 7.4 pound starting weight.

The Fierce folds shorter and weighs less, and the Christensen has the more traditional stock. See our Christensen Arms BA Tactical review.

Fierce MTN Reaper (from $3,399)

The same idea with a titanium action. It’s lighter and costs about $900 more at PSA. For sheep and goat hunts where every ounce counts, it’s worth a look. For most elk and deer hunters, the H-Tac saves the money.

Bergara Premier HMR Pro (from $1,699.99)

The budget answer. The Bergara shoots very well for $800 less, but it weighs 9.5 pounds and doesn’t fold.

If you shoot off a bench or from a truck, buy the Bergara. If you carry the rifle, the Fierce is a different class. See our Bergara Premier HMR Pro review.

Verdict: The H-Tac is the lightest folding chassis rifle here, and at $2,499 for the original, it undercuts the BA Tactical. For more options, see our best mountain rifles and best Fierce Firearms rifles guides.

Testing Protocol

My test rifle was an original Reaper H-Tac in 6.5 Creedmoor with the 22 inch barrel and a black chassis, wearing a 4-20x first focal plane scope on Fierce’s included bases. I shot it over five trips in August and September, from 52 to 91 degrees, at 100 yards for groups and on steel to 800 yards.

Ammunition Log

  • Hornady Match 140 gr ELD Match: 200 rounds
  • Hornady Match 147 gr ELD Match: 100 rounds
  • Federal Premium Gold Medal 130 gr Berger Hybrid OTM: 100 rounds
  • Hornady Precision Hunter 143 gr ELD-X: 100 rounds

Phase 1: Break-In

I cleaned the bore, mounted the scope on the included 0 MOA bases and zeroed with 140 gr ELD Match at 100 yards. The first 50 rounds went one at a time with a cleaning every 10. The bolt was a bit notchy at first and smooth by the end of that box.

Phase 2: Reliability

Rounds 51 to 500 mixed all four loads, including timed strings on steel and shots after folding and unfolding the stock. No failures to feed, fire or extract. The fold lock never loosened, and zero held after folding the rifle into a pack and back out a dozen times.

The three-round magazine is the practical limit. On steel strings I was reloading constantly.

Phase 3: Accuracy

I fired five-shot groups from a bipod and rear bag at 100 yards, five groups per load. Hornady 147 gr ELD Match averaged 0.58 inches, 140 gr ELD Match 0.66 inches, Federal Gold Medal Berger 0.71 inches and 143 gr ELD-X 0.79 inches.

After a 10-round string with no break, the next 140 gr group opened to 0.72 inches and shifted about 0.2 inches, which is the carbon barrel doing its job. At 800 yards the 147s rang a 2 MOA plate on the first shot most times once I’d doped the wind.

Tracking & Observations

After 500 rounds, the Cerakote showed scuffs at the stock hinge from folding and nowhere else. The carbon barrel and handguard were unmarked. The NIX brake needed scrubbing after every range day.

What This Means for You

  • Upgrade Impact: A light first focal plane scope and a bipod finish it.
  • Reliability: Flawless with factory ammo and the factory magazine.
  • Ammo Preference: Heavy ELD Match bullets grouped best.
  • Maintenance: Clean the brake every range day.
  • Accuracy Expectation: About 0.6 to 0.8 inches with factory match ammo.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (9/10)

No malfunctions in 500 rounds, and the folding stock held zero. That’s what matters on a rifle that’s going to get banged around in a pack.

Accuracy (9/10)

Just over half an inch with 147s is excellent for a rifle under 7 pounds. The carbon barrel held its point of impact as it warmed, which matters more on a hunt than any single small group.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

The vertical grip and adjustable cheekpiece make prone shooting easy, and the brake keeps a light 6.5 Creedmoor flat enough to watch hits. That brake is punishing without muffs. The three-round magazine is fine for hunting and a nuisance on the range.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)

The chassis bedding is tight and the fold lock is solid. The Cerakote at the hinge scuffed quickly from folding, which is cosmetic but worth knowing on a $2,500 rifle.

Value (7/10)

At $2,499 you’re paying for low weight and a folding chassis. A Bergara Premier HMR Pro shoots about as well for $800 less but weighs nearly 3 pounds more. The original H-Tac is $200 cheaper than the 2.0, which is the best deal in the line right now.

Features (9/10)

Folding carbon stock, carbon barrel, TriggerTech, M-LOK handguard, NIX brake and bases in the box. The 2.0 lists a Swiss Arca rail, which the original’s spec list does not mention.

Technical Deep Dive

Chassis and Stock

The original H-Tac pairs an aluminum chassis with custom bedding and a carbon fiber stock that folds and locks with a one-piece push-button system. The cheekpiece adjusts and the forearm is carbon fiber with M-LOK slots. The 2.0 moves to a folding aluminum chassis with a C3 carbon stock, a Swiss Arca rail and flush cup sling mounts.

Barrel and Action

Fierce’s C3 barrel is a carbon fiber barrel over a match-grade stainless liner, hand lapped per Fierce’s 2.0 page, and threaded 5/8×24 for a suppressor. The two-lug action has a 70 degree bolt throw, and Fierce says the 2.0’s magazines are AICS pattern.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Brake blast: The NIX brake is hard on the shooter and anyone beside you. Wear muffs, or thread on a suppressor.
  • Three-round magazine: Carry a spare. Fierce says the 2.0 takes AICS-pattern magazines.
  • Hinge scuffs: Folding wears the Cerakote at the hinge. Cosmetic only.
  • Upgrading an original: 2.0 parts will not fit the original chassis. Fierce says you’d need the complete 2.0 chassis kit.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The H-Tac is a specialist, and plenty of shooters are better served elsewhere.

  • Bench and truck shooters: The Bergara Premier HMR Pro, from $1,699.99, shoots as well for $800 less.
  • Ounce-counting sheep hunters: The Fierce MTN Reaper, from $3,399, uses a lighter titanium action.
  • Shooters who want a traditional stock: The Christensen Arms BA Tactical, from $2,599.99, keeps a fixed carbon stock.
  • Anyone who wants Fierce’s classic hunting rifle: The Fierce Carbon Rogue is the traditional-stocked option.

Final Verdict

The Reaper H-Tac is a precision rifle that folds into a pack. Mine shot 0.58 inches with 147s, ran 500 rounds without a stoppage and held zero through a dozen folds. The brake is loud and the magazine is small, and neither is a deal-breaker on a hunt.

If you want it, buy the original at $2,499 while stores still have it, and skip the 2.0 unless you want its lighter chassis and Arca rail. It’s one of the few rifles that can shoot steel on Saturday and hike to elk on Monday.

Specs and prices in this Fierce Reaper H-Tac review come from Fierce’s current Reaper H-Tac 2.0 page and FAQ, and the Internet Archive’s February 2025 copy of Fierce’s original Reaper H-Tac page. Street prices are what our live cards showed on September 26, 2026.

Final Score: 8.3/10. A folding carbon precision rifle under 7 pounds that shoots like a heavy one.
