America, By the Numbers: The True Scale of US Gun Ownership

America is home to more than 500 million civilian guns. That is more firearms than people, about seven for every pet dog, and, laid end to end, enough to reach well past the moon. Below are the stats that show the real scale of gun ownership in the United States, each one sitting next to the math and the source so you can check our work.

Numbers this big stop meaning much on their own. Half a billion of anything is hard to picture. So we did what we do at the gun counter when someone’s eyes glaze over: we put it next to stuff you already know. Dogs. McDonald’s. The Empire State Building. Here is America’s gun habit, measured in things you can actually wrap your head around.

Stat 01
American civilians own about 3 times more guns than every military on Earth combined

Add up every firearm held by every armed force on the planet, from the US military to Russia’s and China’s, and you get about 133 million guns. In the last global count where every nation was measured the same way, the Small Arms Survey put American civilians at about 393 million guns, roughly three times that many. Ordinary citizens in one country out-arm every army in the world put together.

The math: 393 million US civilian guns (Small Arms Survey global count) vs ~133 million military firearms worldwide = about 3 times as many
Source: Small Arms Survey, 2017 global count (both figures)
Stat 02
America has about 7 guns for every dog

There are roughly 68 million pet dogs in the United States. There are more than 500 million guns. That works out to about seven firearms for every good boy and girl in the country.

The math: 500 million guns ÷ ~68 million dogs = 7.4 guns per dog
Source: NSSF (guns); American Pet Products Association, 2025 (dogs)
Stat 03
There are more guns than cars on the road

America has about 285 million registered vehicles, counting every car, truck, motorcycle, and bus on the road. It has more than 500 million guns. There are more firearms in the country than there are vehicles to drive.

The math: 500 million guns vs 284.6 million registered vehicles

Stat 04
Arm every American, and you’d still have a country’s worth left over

Hand a gun to every man, woman, and child in the United States, all 340 million of them, and you would still have more than 160 million guns sitting in the box. That is more than enough to arm everyone in Russia on top of every single American.

The math: 500 million guns − ~340 million people = ~160 million spare (Russia population ~144 million)
Source: NSSF (guns); US Census Bureau (population)
Stat 05
More gun dealers than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined

America has more than 51,000 licensed gun dealers. Add up every McDonald’s and every Starbucks in the country, around 13,706 of the first and 16,864 of the second, and you land near 30,570 storefronts. There are still more than 20,000 more gun counters than that.

The math: 51,000+ dealers vs ~13,706 McDonald’s + ~16,864 Starbucks = ~30,570. Gun dealers win by more than 20,000.
Source: ATF Federal Firearms Listings, Type 01 (dealers); McDonald’s Corp. and Starbucks Corp. filings, 2025 (store counts)
Stat 06
Americans run a gun-sale background check about every two seconds

In 2025, Americans logged 14.6 million background checks tied to gun sales. Spread across the calendar, that is one about every two seconds, around the clock, weekends and holidays included.

The math: 14.6 million gun-sale background checks (2025) ÷ 31.5 million seconds in a year = ~1 every 2 seconds. Figure is the NSSF-adjusted total, which strips out permit checks to approximate actual sales.

Stat 07
Americans go through about 562 rounds of ammo every second

Americans bought an estimated 17.7 billion rounds of ammunition in fiscal 2024. Spread evenly across the year, that is about 562 rounds every second, day and night, without a break.

The math: 17.7 billion rounds ÷ 31.5 million seconds in a year = ~562 rounds per second

Stat 08
About 52 rounds of ammo for every American, every year

Americans bought an estimated 17.7 billion rounds of ammunition in fiscal 2024. Spread across roughly 340 million people, that is about 52 rounds for every man, woman, and child in the country, in a single year.

The math: 17.7 billion rounds ÷ 340 million people = ~52 rounds per person (ammunition figure is rounds sold to consumers).
Source: NSSF Ammunition Consumer Study, FY2024 (rounds sold); US Census Bureau (population)
Stat 09
About 3 new guns are made for every baby born

American factories built about 9.7 million guns in 2023. American parents welcomed about 3.6 million babies in 2024. For every newborn that arrives, the country turns out nearly three brand-new firearms.

The math: 9.7M guns (2023) ÷ 3.63M births (2024) = 2.7 guns per newborn
Source: ATF Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Export Report (production); CDC NCHS (births)
Stat 10
More armed women than the entire population of Texas

About one in four American women owns a gun, which adds up to roughly 33 million women. That is more people than live in the entire state of Texas, home to about 31 million. If America’s armed women were their own state, it would rank second in the nation, behind only California. And ownership is shifting fast: women made up 44.4 percent of all first-time gun buyers in 2024.

The math: ~33 million armed women (Pew: 25% of adult women, 2024) vs Texas population of ~31 million
Source: Pew Research Center and NSSF (ownership); US Census Bureau (population)
Stat 11
They weigh nearly 3 Empire State Buildings

Take a conservative four-pound average across every handgun, rifle, and shotgun in the country. Put together, all of America’s guns weigh about 2 billion pounds. That is heavier than nearly three Empire State Buildings stacked on top of each other, or about 167,000 African elephants. We use four pounds because most American guns are handguns, which run lighter than rifles.

The math: 500M × 4 lb = 2 billion lb = 1 million short tons. Empire State Building = 365,000 short tons, so about 2.7 of them. An African elephant bull weighs ~6 tons, so the pile equals ~167,000 of them.

Stat 12
Laid end to end, they stretch past the moon

Stand every gun in a single line, muzzle to stock, at an average length of about 40 inches. That line runs roughly 316,000 miles, far past the moon, which sits about 238,855 miles away on an average night, with nearly 80,000 miles to spare.

The math: 500M × 40 in = 315,657 miles. Average distance to the moon = 238,855 miles. The line clears it by about 77,000 miles.

Stat 13
More guns than any country has people, except two

Line America’s 500 million guns up against the population of every nation on Earth. Only India and China, the two countries with more than a billion people each, come out ahead. America owns more firearms than the entire population of every other country in the world, from Indonesia to Brazil to Russia to Japan.

The math: 500M guns. Only India (~1.45 billion) and China (~1.41 billion) have larger populations. The next most populous country is the United States itself, at about 340 million.

Stat 14
More guns than people, and double the next country

Measured per person, America is in a league of its own. There are about 120 guns for every 100 people, which makes it the only country on Earth with more guns than citizens. The next closest nation, Yemen, has barely half that, and no other country even reaches one gun per person.

The math: 120.5 guns per 100 residents in the US, against 52.8 for Yemen, the number-two country. America holds under 5% of the world’s people but about 46% of the world’s civilian firearms.

How We Did the Math

Every stat above is built from public, named sources. Here are the anchor numbers we used and where each one comes from. Where a figure needed converting, gun lengths into miles and ammunition into rounds per second, we kept the assumptions conservative so the comparison holds up even on the cautious end.
