The Glenfield Model A is Ruger’s relaunched budget bolt-action, built on the Ruger American Gen I with a threaded 20 in. barrel and a factory scope base. We shot 550 rounds through a .308 and a 6.5 Creedmoor, measured groups and the trigger, sorted out all nine calibers and their thread pitches, and found the $100 list saving over the Gen I nearly gone on the street.
The Henry H12 Provider is a pistol-grip, 10-round lever action in .357 or .44 Magnum built for hunting. We shot 800 rounds through both calibers, logged every hiccup, grouped them at 50 and 100 yards with irons, and found the shorter, threaded H12 Protector costs more while holding three fewer rounds.
The Browning Cynergy CX is a crossover over and under for trap, skeet, sporting clays and upland birds. We shot 800 shells through a walnut 30 in. CX and a 28 in. CX Composite, patterned both, measured the triggers and found the composite costs $110 less while adding an adjustable comb.
The Stoeger STR-9 is a full-size, Turkish-made striker 9mm that sells for about $300. We shot 1,000 rounds through a 15+1 model, logged both stoppages, measured groups and the trigger, sorted out Stoeger’s eight full-size SKUs and found the night sight version for $22 more than the base gun.
The Mossberg 990 is a gas-operated 12 gauge built around the stockless AfterShock layout. We shot 600 shells through a 14.75 in. AfterShock and an 18.5 in.
