The rule is straightforward: never shoot steel shot through a Full choke or anything tighter. Improved Modified is generally the tightest choke you should use with standard steel loads. Many manufacturers recommend Modified as the maximum for high-velocity steel. Check your choke tube for a steel shot rating before you load up with non-toxic loads.
Chokes specifically designed for steel are available and common in waterfowl hunting. They have a modified internal geometry that handles steel’s rigidity without the pressure spikes you get from forcing it through a constriction it wasn’t designed for. If you’re duck or goose hunting regularly, a dedicated steel-rated choke is worth the investment.

Pattern Your Gun to Know for Sure
Every shotgun patterns differently. Two identical guns with the same choke and the same shell can print noticeably different patterns.
