Hearing & Eye Protection Brands FAQ

Do I really need both ear and eye protection?
Yes. Gunfire routinely exceeds 140 decibels – loud enough to cause permanent hearing damage from a single unprotected shot – and ejected brass, gas and debris are a constant threat to your eyes. Both are required at every reputable range.

Electronic or passive earmuffs?
Electronic muffs amplify quiet sounds like range commands while instantly cutting the gunshot, so you can hear and stay protected – brands like Peltor, Howard Leight and Walker's lead here. Passive muffs are cheaper and need no batteries but block all sound. Many shooters own both.

What makes shooting glasses different from regular sunglasses?
Shooting and ballistic glasses meet impact standards like ANSI Z87.1, and the top models (Wiley X) meet U.S. military ballistic standards. They are built to stop flying brass, debris and fragments, which ordinary sunglasses are not.

Should I double up hearing protection?
For indoor ranges, big-bore rifles and muzzle brakes, yes – wearing foam earplugs under an earmuff stacks the protection. It is the simplest way to handle the loudest environments.
