If American gunmaking had a founding family name, it would be Colt. The Single Action Army is the revolver from every Western you ever watched, the Model 1911 was the U.S. standard sidearm for most of a century, the Python is the snake gun collectors still fight over, and the M16 and M4 armed generations of American troops. Own a Colt and sooner or later you need a part that actually fits it, whether that is a 1911 magazine, a recoil spring or a genuine M4 barrel. Here is who they are, what they make, and what is worth buying.

Table of Contents

Who Colt is

Colt is a West Hartford, Connecticut gunmaker whose company dates to Samuel Colt’s 1855 Hartford armory. It makes 1911 pistols, double-action and Single Action Army revolvers and AR-pattern rifles, and has belonged to the Czech-based Colt CZ Group since 2021.

Sam Colt got U.S. Patent No. 138 for a revolving-cylinder pistol in 1836 and built his first factory in Paterson, New Jersey. Hartford came next. By 1855 he had a new armory overlooking the Connecticut River, turning out 150 weapons a day by Colt’s own timeline. He died in 1862 at 47, and control passed to his wife, Elizabeth Jarvis Colt, who is the real hero of the next chapter.

The quirk you can still see in Hartford is the roof. After his trips to Russia, Colt had the East Armory capped with a blue onion dome topped by his rearing colt. In February 1864 a fire that started in the attic burned the armory to the ground, dome included, and nobody ever found the cause. Elizabeth had insured the place. She rebuilt it, dome and all, and production came back. The site is now part of Coltsville National Historical Park, though the armory itself is privately owned and the Park Service lists no dome tours.

The modern story is rougher, and it matters if you’re buying. Colt filed for Chapter 11 in 1992 and again in 2015, after losing its M4 contract in 2013, and came out of the second one in January 2016. In September 2019 it suspended AR-15 production for the civilian market, saying the market had too much capacity. In 2021 Czech group Česká zbrojovka bought Colt’s parent company for $220 million in cash plus shares, then renamed itself Colt CZ Group in 2022. Colt’s ARs are back in the catalog now, so that suspension didn’t last.

Colt also has a recent black mark. In May 2025 it recalled its CBX bolt-action rifles because the trigger may not fully reset if it’s pulled with the manual safety on, which can lead to an unintended discharge. If you own a CBX Precision or Tac Hunter, stop using it and go to Colt’s CBX recall site.

What Colt makes

1911 pistols and their parts

The 1911 is still the center of the brand. The current lineup runs from Defender and Commander to the Classics, Competition, Combat Elite, Delta Elite and Gold Cup, with optics-ready versions now on the menu. Colt lists the Gold Cup at $1,349 and the Optics-Ready Gold Cup Trophy at $2,099, while our feed had a Gold Cup .45 from $1,100.

For owners, the useful stuff is cheap. Factory magazines start around $25, a recoil spring set is $5.99 at Brownells, and a barrel link is under $5. There are also Gold Cup bushings at $31.99, recoil spring plugs, sears and firing pin parts. Our feed has no Colt-branded match barrel or factory grip set right now, so ask a Colt dealer or the factory if you need one.

AR-15 and M4 parts

Colt bought the AR-15 rights from ArmaLite in 1961 and won its first contract for 104,000 M16 rifles in 1963. That’s why builders want the roll mark. Our feed shows the M4 and M4A1 barrels at 14.5 inches from $268.99, a 10.3-inch M4CQB at $258.99, lower parts kits from $119.99, a bolt carrier group at $223.99 and a field repair kit from about $45. Complete uppers include the Monolithic models, which run $1,137 and up.

Rifles

The headline is the Enhanced Patrol Rifle II, which Colt calls the next step for its carbine line. Colt lists the 16.1-inch EPR II at $1,449 and the Pro at $1,699. The basic CR6920 carbine is $1,099, and the M4 FBP is $1,949. A complete EPR II upper is $809.99 at Optics Planet, which is a tidy way to get the barrel and handguard without the whole rifle.

Revolvers

The snake guns came back one at a time: the Cobra in 2017, the King Cobra after it, the Python in 2020, the Anaconda in .44 Magnum in 2021 and a blued Python in 2024. Colt also lists the Viper, Grizzly and Kodiak. Python list prices run $1,499 to $1,699, and our feed had a matte blued 2.5-inch for $1,120 at PSA. The Single Action Army is $2,299 in all three barrel lengths, and Colt files it under collection rather than carry.

Pros

  • Factory 1911 parts are cheap
  • Genuine M4 barrels and uppers available
  • Historic Archive Services for older guns

Cons

  • One magazine ships with each gun
  • No express warranty from Colt
  • Service limits on older models

What Colt owners should know before they buy

This is where a brand page should earn its keep, because all of it comes straight from Colt’s own FAQ and most buyers never read it.

  • Parts route: Colt sends parts buyers to Brownells and MidwayUSA. It does not sell firearms direct online.
  • Warranty: Colt says it offers no express warranty. It services factory defects free for the original purchaser for one year from retail purchase, so keep the sales slip.
  • Older guns: Colt can’t service legacy models older than 10 years, except most 1911s and third-generation Single Action Armies.
  • Magazines: since November 2018, every Colt ships with one. Budget for spares on day one.
  • Ammo: Colt doesn’t recommend reloads, and doesn’t suggest +P in models made before 1980.
  • Fake stores: Colt names coltgunstore.com, coltgunshop.com and coltpython.store as not affiliated with it. Don’t send them money.

Build quality and where it is made

Colt moved its last Hartford operations to West Hartford in 1994, and that’s where the company is based today. You pay for the roll mark, the fit and the provenance as much as the steel. A $269 M4 barrel isn’t the cheapest way to get a 14.5-inch 5.56 barrel, and I won’t pretend the metal alone justifies it. If you want your Colt correct, it’s the only barrel that does the job.

How Colt compares

On 1911s, Colt sits under custom houses like Wilson Combat and Ed Brown on fit and finish, and over budget imports on pedigree. A Springfield Garrison is a cheaper way into a basic 1911, but it won’t carry the rampant colt. On ARs, BCM, Daniel Defense and Aero Precision are the real competition. They often deliver the same job for less money or with better modern features, and Colt wins on M4 heritage. On revolvers, Smith & Wesson’s 686 costs less than a Python and shoots just as well. The Python wins on the trigger and the collector appeal, and that’s what you’re paying for.

Who should buy what

  • Colt 1911 owner: two spare factory magazines and a fresh recoil spring.
  • Bullseye or target shooter: a Gold Cup National Match, listed at $1,549.
  • AR builder who wants the real thing: an M4 barrel, or an EPR II upper if you want it assembled.
  • Field armorer: the Colt field repair kit and high-wear parts kit.
  • Revolver buyer: a Python if you love the action, a King Cobra if you want to spend less.
  • Collector: order a Historical Letter from Colt Archive Services before you pay collector money.

Look elsewhere if you’re building an AR purely on price or you want a race-ready 1911 out of the box. Semi-custom shops do that better.

The Colt philosophy

Colt sells its history. The revolver, the 1911 and the M16 made the name, and the company builds around that legacy instead of chasing fashion. Even its newest guns are old names done over with better machining. Some buyers love that, and others will say it’s a museum with a gift shop. Both have a point.

How to choose your Colt setup

Start with what you own, and check the fit by model. Government and Commander magazines share a length, while Officer, Defender and New Agent magazines are shorter, and they’re listed separately for 9mm, .38 Super and .45 ACP. Buy spare mags first, since Colt only ships one, then replace the recoil spring. Those two cheap parts cure a lot of 1911 gripes before you touch anything expensive.

On an AR, decide whether you want a barrel, an upper or a whole rifle before you shop, because the price gap can make the decision for you. A $809.99 EPR II upper against a $1,449 list rifle is a good question to ask if you already own a lower. If you’ve got an old Colt with a problem, use the Serial Number Lookup first to date it, since age decides whether the factory will take it.

The gun that armed America

It’s hard to overstate how much American firearms history runs through one Connecticut company. Colt delivered over 30,000 Single Action Armies to the U.S. government between 1873 and 1891. Theodore Roosevelt, as NYPD commissioner, picked the Colt New Police .32 as the department’s first standard-issue revolver in 1896. The 1911, designed by John Browning, served as the standard sidearm from 1911 until the Beretta M9 replaced it in 1985, and Colt and other makers built 1.8 million 1911A1s for World War II. The M16 and M4 came after that. No other American gunmaker has that resume, and it’s why factory-correct Colt parts still sell.

Where Colt Fits in Our Buying Guides

Colt FAQ

Where is Colt made?

Colt is based in West Hartford, Connecticut, where it moved its remaining Hartford operations in 1994. The company has belonged to the Czech-based Colt CZ Group since 2021.

Where can I buy genuine Colt parts?

Colt points buyers to Brownells and MidwayUSA for genuine parts. It does not sell firearms directly online, and it warns that coltgunstore.com, coltgunshop.com and coltpython.store are not affiliated with it.

Do Colt 1911 magazines fit other 1911 pistols?

Colt Government and Commander magazines share a length, and Officer, Defender and New Agent magazines are shorter. Match the caliber and frame, then function-test any Colt magazine in a non-Colt 1911 before you rely on it.

What is the difference between Gold Cup and National Match?

They are Colt pistol models, not separate barrels you buy off a shelf. Colt lists the Gold Cup at $1,349, the Gold Cup National Match at $1,549 and the Gold Cup Trophy at $1,949.

Does Colt have a warranty?

Colt says it has no express warranty. It services factory defects at no charge for the original purchaser for one year from retail purchase. Normal wear, finish damage and improper ammunition are excluded.

Will Colt service my old gun?

Colt says it cannot service legacy models older than 10 years, with the exception of most 1911 models and third-generation Single Action Armies. Use its Serial Number Lookup to date your gun first.

Is my Colt CBX rifle recalled?

Yes, both CBX models were recalled in May 2025. The trigger may not fully reset if pulled with the manual safety on. Stop using the rifle and follow the instructions at coltcbx.com.

What tier is Colt?

Premium heritage tier: Connecticut-based, with list prices from $1,099 on a CR6920 to $2,299 on a Single Action Army. Custom 1911 shops beat it on fit, but none has its history.

USA Gun Shop may earn a commission on purchases made through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. We list products on merit; prices and availability are pulled live and can change.
