The Guns of The Equalizer: Every Weapon Identified

Robert McCall has no signature gun, and the film knows it. He owns a closet full of hardware and spends most of the runtime not opening it. When he does shoot somebody it’s almost always with a pistol he’s just taken off the man he shot, and the kill everyone remembers involves no firearm at all.

That makes The Equalizer an unusual one to write up. The interesting weapons here are mostly other people’s. Here are the guns of The Equalizer, who actually carries what, and an honest answer about whether the nail gun would work.

Table of Contents

The nail gun, and whether it would really do that

McCall works the Home Mart finale with a pneumatic nailer held in a two-handed pistol grip, putting nails into men across an aisle. It’s a great scene and it’s completely impossible, for a reason that has nothing to do with power.

Every pneumatic nailer sold has a work contact element on the nose, the spring-loaded collar around the muzzle. The trigger does nothing on its own. The tool only fires when that collar is pressed against a surface, because the contact trip is what actually releases the valve. You can bump-fire one by holding the trigger and bouncing the nose along a board, but the nose still has to touch.

This is not a design convention either, it’s the law. OSHA requires every pneumatic nailer running above 100 psi to carry a muzzle safety that stops the tool ejecting a fastener unless the muzzle is against the work surface. The same guidance is why the contact trigger has a reputation: the injury rate on a bump-fire trigger runs about double a sequential one, which is a real problem on a job site and the exact reason the tool cannot do what McCall does with it.

So McCall could pin a man’s hand to a shelf, which the film also does. He couldn’t shoot one across the room. To make a nailer work like that you’d have to defeat the safety, which is the single thing every manufacturer and every safety body tells you never to do, and it’s how a lot of real nail gun injuries happen.

The power side of it is fine, mind you. A framing nailer will drive a 3-inch nail through construction lumber, and the hardware store is genuinely full of things that would hurt somebody. The film’s instinct is right. The mechanism is not.

“Is that a Heckler & Koch?”

This is the best gun moment in the film and it usually gets left out of these lists. Andri pulls a pistol on McCall. McCall, unarmed and apparently making conversation, asks whether it’s a Heckler & Koch. Andri looks down at his own gun. Then he doesn’t have it any more.

The pistol is a Springfield Armory XD, not an HK, and that’s the joke twice over. McCall knows exactly what it is. He asks the wrong question on purpose, because a man who’s just been asked to identify his own gun will look at it, and a man looking at his gun is not looking at you. The whole character is in that beat: he weaponizes other people’s attention before he touches anything.

The XD is a real bargain now and one of the few striker guns with a grip safety, which some people love and some people find pointless. Either way it doesn’t look remotely like an HK.

The Glocks

There are two, and the film splits them the way real life does. The Glock 17 is the full-size gun: suppressed in the hands of one of Slavi’s men at the restaurant, carried by the corrupt detectives Gilly and Harris, and turned on Harris by McCall in the shot above. The Glock 19 is the compact, which is what Detective Frank Masters and his crew carry as duty guns, and what one of Teddy’s men brings into the Home Mart before McCall takes it off him and hands it to Ralphie.

That split is correct and quietly well observed. The 17 is a duty-belt gun. The 19 is what plainclothes detectives actually carry, because it hides.

Both are on Gen 6 now. We took the compact apart in our Glock 19 Gen 6 review and the full-size gun in the Glock 17 Gen 6 review, and the wider carry field is in best concealed carry handguns.

The Mag-na-ported Colt

Off duty, Masters carries a third-generation Colt Detective Special, and the camera gets close enough to show something most people scroll straight past. There are Mag-na-port cuts in the barrel, the little EDM-machined slots that vent gas upward to fight muzzle rise.

On a six-shot .38 snub that’s a slightly indulgent thing to have done, and it tells you who this character is. A dirty cop with a personalized backup gun. Nobody mentions it. It’s just there for anyone who looks.

Colt discontinued it, so everything on the market is used, and police trade-ins are where the value sits.

The closet he does not open

McCall keeps a hidden cache in his apartment, which is a nod to the 1985 series where Edward Woodward’s version did the same. Pistols mounted on the back wall including a suppressed Glock 26, magazines, gear bags, and on the right what looks like a Serbu Super Shorty, the tiny pistol-grip shotgun that is a registered AOW in the US.

A suppressed subcompact is a real thing rather than a movie invention, and our how suppressors work explainer covers what it does and does not do. And he barely touches it. He goes to a hardware store instead. The cache is there to tell you what he could do, not what he does, which is a better use of a prop than most films manage.

Teddy’s team, and the continuity slip

Teddy brings a Heckler & Koch MP5A3 to the Home Mart with a railed handguard, RIS foregrip, suppressor and an EOTech XPS2. His men run suppressed UMP45s and HK416 D10RS carbines loaded with night sights, Aimpoints, Magpul stocks and SureFire lights.

Here’s the slip. Watch Teddy’s trigger group. In some shots the MP5 wears a Navy group with pictogram markings, in others it has the older S-E-F group with letters. Same gun, same scene, two different lower housings. Almost certainly two prop guns dressed alike and cut together.

A transferable MP5 is a machine gun and priced accordingly. HK’s SP5 and SP5K are the semi-automatic versions you can actually buy, and they’re still not cheap.

Everything else the Russians bring

The shot above is the diner. A man in a hi-vis vest is sitting in McCall’s booth pretending to be a utility worker, and McCall clocks him because his hands are too clean for someone who works with them. Out comes a Micro Uzi.

Andri’s people carry a full-size IMI Uzi with a foregrip, a Sa vz. 61 Skorpion in .32 ACP that McCall ends up holding himself, and a Zastava M92, the short Serbian AK carbine. There is also a sawed-off Remington 870, though not with the Russians: it belongs to one of Little John Looney’s men during the meeting with Teddy, and Masters grabs it.

The Zastava M92 is genuinely on the US market as an AK pistol, and it’s the same short-barreled 7.62×39 idea. The rest of that field is in our best AK pistols guide. Cutting an 870 down to the length seen in the film is a felony without a stamp, so the honest buy is a factory short-barreled model or a standard gun. Our best pump action shotguns guide covers the field.

One more worth correcting, because it turns up in a lot of write-ups. The Beretta 92FS in this film never gets used and never changes hands. It sits in a thug’s shoulder holster in one shot, with custom grips, and that’s the whole appearance.

Why McCall barely uses a gun

Count how many of these are his. The Glock 17 he points at Harris came off somebody. The XD came off Andri. The Skorpion came off one of Andri’s men. The Glock 19 he hands to Ralphie came off a henchman. The cache in his closet is the only hardware he owns and he leaves it there.

That’s a deliberate design and it’s the opposite of how this genre normally works. John Wick’s guns are a character trait. McCall’s competence is specifically that he doesn’t need a particular gun, and the film keeps proving it by handing him whatever is nearest.

The nailer may not work the way the film says. The idea behind it, that the man is the weapon and the object is incidental, is the most consistent thing in the movie.

Frequently asked questions

What gun does Robert McCall use in The Equalizer?

He has no signature gun. He mostly uses weapons taken from his opponents, including a Glock 17, a Springfield Armory XD and a Skorpion. He keeps a cache at home with a suppressed Glock 26 and a Serbu Super Shorty but rarely uses it.

Would a nail gun actually work as a weapon?

Not the way the film shows. Pneumatic nailers have a work contact element on the nose that must be pressed against a surface before the trigger will fire the tool. You can’t aim one across a room. Pressed against something, like a hand on a shelf, it drives a nail with real force.

What pistol does McCall take from Andri?

A Springfield Armory XD. McCall asks whether it’s a Heckler & Koch to make Andri glance down at it, then disarms him. It is not an HK, and McCall knows that.

What submachine gun does Teddy carry?

A suppressed Heckler & Koch MP5A3 with a railed handguard and an EOTech XPS2 holosight. In a continuity error the trigger group changes between a Navy group and an S-E-F group across shots.

Can you buy the guns from The Equalizer?

The handguns yes: the Glock 17, 19 and 26, the Springfield XD and the Beretta 92FS are all current. The Colt Detective Special is used-market only. The MP5, UMP, HK416, Uzis and Skorpion are machine guns, though HK’s SP5 is the semi-auto MP5 equivalent and the Zastava M92 is sold as an AK pistol.

McCall works through more Glocks than any other character on this site, and every one of them is a current model. We follow them on our Glock deals page, with the Springfield XD and the rest on handgun deals.
