Every air rifle is defined by its power plant, the mechanism that launches the pellet. Get this choice right and everything else falls into place. Here is how the four main airgun power plants, spring-piston, gas-piston, PCP, and CO2, actually work, and which one fits how you want to shoot.

Spring-Piston

The classic air rifle power plant. Cocking the rifle (usually by breaking the barrel) compresses a stout coiled spring behind a piston. Pull the trigger and the spring drives the piston forward, compressing a burst of air that launches the pellet. Spring guns are simple, durable, and easy to service, but the firing cycle has a bit of buzz and recoil, so they reward good technique. They are also single-shot and should not be left cocked for long periods, which can weaken the spring.

Gas-Piston (Nitro Piston)

A modern evolution of the spring gun that replaces the coiled spring with a sealed gas strut, similar to the gas strut on a car hatchback. CO2

Powered by disposable 12-gram cartridges or larger 88/90-gram cartridges, CO2 is cheap, convenient, and great for plinking and air pistols. The catch is that CO2 pressure changes with temperature, so velocity drops in the cold and rises in the heat, making CO2 less consistent than PCP. It is best thought of as a fun, low-commitment power plant rather than a precision or hunting choice.
