Best MP5 Clones in 2026: Semi-Auto MP5s You Can Actually Buy

Last updated August 12th 2026

Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning at no additional cost to you, we may earn a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

Before you buy: every gun on this page is a semi-automatic firearm sold through normal FFL channels. None of them are machine guns, and none of them fire more than one round per press. If you want the real select-fire article, read our guide to the National Firearms Act first, because that market works nothing like this one. Check your own state and local rules before ordering, and read our firearm safety and legal disclaimer.

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun. Where we have not shot a specific variant ourselves, we say so in that section.

Why Everyone Wants an MP5 and Nobody Can Have One

The MP5 is probably the most recognisable submachine gun ever built. It has been in every action film you have seen, on the hip of every hostage rescue team since the seventies, and it still looks modern nearly sixty years after Heckler and Koch designed it. So people want one. Then they find out what owning a real one actually involves.

A genuine select-fire MP5 is a machine gun in the legal sense, which means it has to be a pre-1986 registered gun, and there are almost none of those in civilian hands. The ones that exist trade for the price of a house deposit. That is the whole story, and our NFA explainer covers why the registry closed and what that did to prices.

What you can buy is a semi-automatic gun built on the same roller-delayed action, in the same shape, that takes the same magazines and most of the same furniture. That market has quietly gotten very good over the last decade. Ten years ago your options were a rough import or a five thousand dollar custom build. Now there are three or four genuinely good roller-delayed 9mm guns under two grand, plus a couple of AR and AK based alternatives that are honestly easier to live with.

I have ranked these on how they shoot, how well they are made, and whether parts and magazines are easy to find. Prices update live from our retail partners, so what you see is what they are actually selling for today.

PTR has been making roller-delayed rifles in South Carolina for years, and the 9CT is what happens when a company that already understands the action decides to build the pistol calibre version properly. It is not a parts-kit gun. The receiver is made in house, the tolerances are tight, and it shows in how it runs.

The roller-delayed action is the whole point. It shoots flatter and softer than a straight blowback 9mm because the bolt is not just a heavy lump slamming back and forth. You notice it immediately if you have shot a cheap blowback carbine. Follow-up shots land where you meant them to.

Two honest gripes. It is heavier than people expect, because a roller-delayed gun needs a lot of steel in the right places. And the HK charging handle sits where your support hand wants to be, so you will smack your knuckles at least once learning the gun. Neither is a reason not to buy it.

One thing to watch on the listings. Some 9CT configurations are sold as factory short-barrelled rifles with a stock fitted, and an SBR is a registered NFA item that needs its own tax stamp and paperwork before it can come home. The plain pistol versions do not. Read the product title carefully before you click buy.

Best For: Anyone who wants the real roller-delayed shooting experience from a company that will still be answering the phone in five years.

Zenith guns are built on Turkish MKE tooling, and MKE got that tooling from Heckler and Koch under licence decades ago. So this is not a copy of an MP5 so much as an MP5 built on a cousin of the original production line. Genuine HK furniture and magazines fit without anyone taking a file to them, which is not true of every clone.

For the money it is the easiest recommendation here. You get the same roller-delayed action as the PTR for a few hundred less, and the Essentials package usually ships with a case, a sling and spare magazines, which softens the cost further.

The catch is that it is an import, and imports live and die by policy. Zenith has had lean periods where nothing landed for months and prices spiked on what was already in the country. If you see one at a good price and you want one, do not wait for a sale that might not come.

Best For: The buyer who wants genuine roller-delayed shooting and would rather put the saved money into ammunition and a can.

This is the genuine article, made by Heckler and Koch in the same plant as the military guns. The SP5 is a semi-automatic MP5 with a different name on the side, and if you have ever handled a real one you already know what the fuss is about. The machining, the finish, the way the parts fit together, it is all a step above what the clones manage.

Two configurations show up regularly. The SP5K PDW is the short one with the 5.83 inch barrel and the stubby front end, and the SP5L is the long version with the 8.86 inch barrel and an M-LOK handguard. Both are pistols as sold.

Here is my honest take. It does not shoot meaningfully better than the PTR. It is not more reliable in any way you will notice. What you are buying is the real thing, made by the people who invented it, and the resale value that comes with that. If that matters to you it is worth the money. If it does not, buy the PTR and a lot of ammunition.

Best For: Collectors, and anyone who has wanted the genuine HK badge since they were fifteen and has finally got the money.

Let me be straight about this one. The Banshee is not an MP5 clone and does not pretend to be. It is here because a lot of people who think they want an MP5 actually want a compact, soft-shooting 9mm they can run with AR controls, and this does that job better than any clone.

CMMG’s radial delayed blowback is the clever bit. A normal 9mm AR is straight blowback, which means a heavy bolt and a lot of shove. The Banshee bleeds off some of that with a rotating bolt, and the result sits somewhere between a blowback carbine and a roller-delayed gun. It is noticeably nicer to shoot than the budget option below.

The magazine situation seals it. Glock magazines are everywhere, they cost very little, and if you already carry a Glock you are feeding both guns from the same box. That is a real practical advantage over MP5 magazines, which are fine but cost more and live in fewer shops. If you want more options on this pattern, our 9mm AR pistol roundup goes deeper.

Best For: The shooter who already owns ARs and Glocks and wants the compact 9mm without learning a new manual of arms.

If the budget stops around a thousand dollars, this is the gun. The AK-V is Palmetto State Armory’s 9mm on an AK-pattern receiver, and it feeds from CZ Scorpion magazines, which are among the cheapest quality pistol calibre magazines you can buy.

It is straight blowback, so it shoves harder than anything else on this list. Nobody who has shot a roller-delayed gun back to back with this will tell you it is equal. But it runs, the folding triangle brace version packs down small, and it costs less than half what the HK does.

Buy this one if you want to shoot a lot without thinking too hard about the gun. Buy the PTR if the action itself is what you are after.

Best For: First-time pistol calibre buyers, and anyone who would rather spend the difference on range time.

How to Choose Between Them

The first question is whether you actually want the roller-delayed action or just the shape. If it is the action, the list is short: PTR, Zenith, or HK. Everything else is a different gun wearing similar clothes.

The second question is magazines. MP5 magazines are good but they cost more and fewer shops stock them. Glock and Scorpion magazines are cheap and everywhere. Over a few thousand rounds that difference adds up to real money.

The third is what you plan to hang off it. If you want a suppressor, get a threaded barrel from the start, because retrofitting one to a roller-delayed gun is more involved than screwing a can onto an AR. The PTR ships threaded, which is part of why it sits at the top of this list.

Pistol, Brace or SBR: Know What You Are Buying

Almost every gun on this page is sold as a pistol. That matters, because the moment you add a shoulder stock to a firearm with a barrel under sixteen inches you have made a short-barrelled rifle, and an SBR is a registered NFA item with its own paperwork and tax stamp.

Some models are sold from the factory as SBRs, already registered, and those listings usually say so in the product name. You still have to do the transfer paperwork and wait for approval before it comes home. If a listing mentions a stock and a barrel under sixteen inches, assume it is an NFA item and check before you buy.

Braces are a separate argument that has been through the courts more than once. If you are buying a braced pistol, check where the rules stand in your state at the time you buy rather than trusting a forum post from two years ago.

Bottom Line: The One I’d Buy

The PTR 9CT. It is American made, it is threaded from the factory, it takes standard MP5 magazines, and it shoots like the real thing for well under half the price of the HK. The Zenith is the better buy if you find one discounted, and the SP5 is the one to get if the badge matters. But for most people walking into this category with two thousand dollars, the 9CT is the answer.

If what you actually wanted was the full-auto experience, that is a different road entirely. Start with what the National Firearms Act actually says, then read our history of how machine guns changed combat. And if belt-fed is more your thing, we have covered the belt-fed AR-15 market separately.

FAQ: MP5 Clones

Yes. Every gun on this page is semi-automatic, fires one round per press, and is sold through a normal FFL like any other firearm. What is restricted is the select-fire MP5, which is a machine gun in the legal sense and can only be transferred if it was registered before May 1986.

What is the best MP5 clone in 2026?

The PTR 9CT. It is built in South Carolina, ships with a threaded barrel, takes standard MP5 magazines, and uses the same roller-delayed action as the original for well under half the price of an HK SP5.

Can you buy a real full-auto MP5?

Only if it is a pre-1986 registered machine gun, and almost none exist in civilian hands. The registry closed to new civilian machine guns in May 1986, so supply is fixed and prices reflect that. Expect a transferable MP5 to cost more than a car.

Do MP5 clones take genuine HK magazines?

The roller-delayed guns do. PTR and Zenith both run standard MP5 magazines without modification, and Zenith is built on Turkish MKE tooling that traces back to HK's own licensed machinery, so genuine furniture tends to fit as well. The CMMG Banshee uses Glock magazines and the PSA AK-V uses CZ Scorpion magazines, so neither takes MP5 mags.

Is a roller-delayed 9mm worth the extra money over blowback?

If you shoot a lot, yes. A roller-delayed action spreads the impulse out instead of slamming a heavy bolt straight back, so it shoots flatter and lets you get back on target quicker. Shoot a PTR next to a straight blowback gun and the difference is obvious in the first magazine.

Is an MP5 clone with a brace an SBR?

As sold, no. These ship as pistols. Fitting an actual shoulder stock to a barrel under sixteen inches creates a short-barrelled rifle, which is a registered NFA item needing its own tax stamp. Some models are sold from the factory as registered SBRs, and those listings normally say so in the product name.
