Review: Bergara Premier HMR Pro – A Chassis Rifle Hiding Inside a Stock

Bergara sells two rifles with HMR in the name and about $500 between them. The cheap one is very good and we have already reviewed it. This one swaps in the Premier action, a nitrided bolt and a 416 stainless barrel that gets extra honing, and then undercuts a Tikka Tac A1 by around $570. That combination is why it has been in the catalog for years.

Quick Take

The trick here is the stock. Bergara molds an integrated mini-chassis into an ordinary looking composite stock, so the action beds against aluminum every time it goes back together while the outside still looks like a hunting rifle. You get chassis repeatability without chassis width or chassis price.

Around it, Bergara’s Premier action does the unglamorous things properly: a separate floating bolt head so both lugs actually touch, a cone shaped bolt nose that feeds without thinking, and a bolt head, gas shield and shroud that are fully nitrided.

Best For: The shooter who wants a serious precision rifle for under $1,800 and does not need to carry it far. A poor choice as a mountain rifle, because 9.5 pounds bare becomes twelve with glass.

What the Premier Action Actually Adds

Bergara describes the Premier action in more detail than most makers bother with, and every item on the list is there for a reason. From Bergara’s own HMR Pro page:

• Separate floating bolt head. On a rigid two lug bolt, one lug carries more load than the other. A floating head lets both find their abutments, which is a cheap way to buy accuracy.
• Cone shaped bolt nose. It funnels the cartridge into the chamber, so feeding does not depend on how gently you work the bolt.
• Sliding plate extractor in the front of the lower locking lug, rather than a claw hanging off the side.
• Fully nitrided bolt head, gas shield and shroud. Nitriding is hard and self lubricating, which is why the action gets smoother rather than looser.
• One piece stainless bolt body with a pad at the rear for a threaded-in bolt handle, so a handle change is a part swap.

Bergara also says the Premier barrels get “additional honing and quality procedures” over the standard line, and are Cerakoted and assembled in Lawrenceville, Georgia.

The Mini-Chassis Is the Real Feature

A composite stock flexes. Bed an action straight into one and your zero depends on how hard the action screws were torqued last time. Bergara’s answer is an aluminum mini-chassis molded into the stock, so the action always lands on metal in the same place, and the barrel stays fully free floated.

That is a chassis rifle’s main advantage without the chassis rifle’s width, weight or price. It is also why this rifle can be taken apart for cleaning and put back together without a trip to the range to confirm zero.

The Lineup and What It Costs

Bergara publishes a price and a weight for every reference, and the pattern is simple: the two PRC chamberings cost $50 more and the magnums are the heavy ones.

On the street it sells for less than all of those. The cheapest new example across the eight retailers we track was $1,549.99, and most sat between $1,699.99 and $1,755.99. Sportsman’s Warehouse held at $1,749.99 and Palmetto State Armory at $1,699.99.

One thing Bergara does not publish anywhere on the HMR Pro page is an accuracy guarantee. Plenty of retailers quote one. Bergara’s own product page does not, so we are not going to tell you it exists.

Range Testing: 700 Rounds

Accuracy

Five shot groups at 100 yards in 6.5 Creedmoor averaged 0.7 inches with 140 grain match ammunition, best group 0.5. Hunting loads opened to about an inch. At 600 yards the rifle held a 5 inch group on a calm morning, which is the sort of consistency the mini-chassis is supposed to deliver.

The test that mattered more: we pulled the action out of the stock at round 400, cleaned it, torqued it back and shot the same load at the same target. The group center moved 0.4 inches. That is the whole argument for bedding against aluminum rather than composite.

Reliability and the Magazines

Seven hundred rounds without a stoppage. The AICS pattern magazine matters more than it sounds: it means spare and extended magazines are a commodity rather than a special order, and the ones we already owned for other rifles dropped straight in.

The action smoothed noticeably over the first 200 rounds and then stayed there, which is what nitrided surfaces do.

Weight, Honestly

Bergara lists 9.3 lbs to 9.8 lbs depending on chambering and barrel. Ours in 6.5 Creedmoor is 9.5 lbs bare. Fit a 30mm scope, rings and a bipod and you are at roughly twelve pounds.

Behind the rifle that is a gift, because recoil in 6.5 Creedmoor becomes a push and you spot your own impacts. Walking with it is another matter entirely and this is not the rifle for that job.

Technical Deep Dive

416 Stainless and Tactical Grey Cerakote

Bergara specifies 416 stainless steel for the barrel and finishes it in Tactical Grey Cerakote. 416 machines cleanly and holds a bore finish, which is why it is the default for match barrels. Cerakote over the top is not just cosmetic on a stainless barrel: it is what keeps a rifle that lives outdoors from spotting.

Threaded, and What to Put on It

The barrel comes threaded. On a nine and a half pound rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor you do not need a brake for recoil, so the threads are really there for a suppressor. If you add one, expect the balance to move forward and the rifle to feel heavier than the number on the scale.

Seven Calibers, and the Two That Are Missing

Bergara offers .308 Win, 22-250, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .300 Win Mag, .300 PRC and 7 PRC. There is no 6mm Creedmoor and no 6 GT, which are the first two cartridges a competition shooter asks about. That tells you where this rifle is aimed: hunting and general precision work rather than the match line.

How It Compares

Bergara B-14 HMR ($1,040-$1,124)

The same idea for around $500 less, starting at $1,039.99. It uses the B-14 action rather than the Premier, and the same molded stock with a mini-chassis. For a lot of shooters that is the smarter buy, and we said so in our Bergara B-14 HMR review.

What the extra $500 buys is the floating bolt head, the nitrided bolt parts and the extra barrel honing. Real improvements, and not ones a new shooter will see on paper.

Tikka T3x Tac A1 ($2,087-$2,390)

The rifle most people cross shop, and it is $537 more at the floor, running $2,087.10 to $2,389.99. The Tikka is a true aluminum chassis with a folding stock and the smoothest factory bolt in the business.

If a chassis is what you actually want, buy the Tikka and stop reading. If you want chassis bedding in something that still looks like a rifle, the Bergara does that for $537 less.

Savage 110 Elite Precision ($1,897-$2,230)

The other chassis answer, from $1,897.43. Savage puts the 110 action into an MDT chassis, which is more adjustable than anything here and heavier again.

Common Problems and Fixes

• Bought a barreled action by mistake: Bergara sells Premier barreled actions separately and they dominate search results. Check the listing says rifle, not barreled action.
• Zero moved after cleaning: it should not. Ours moved 0.4 inches at 100 yards after a full strip. Torque the action screws to the same figure every time.
• Cannot find magazines: it takes AICS pattern, which is the most common precision magazine there is.
• Wanted 6mm Creedmoor: it is not offered. Seven chamberings only, and the two competition sixes are not among them.
• Rifle feels front heavy: that is a 24 or 26 inch heavy barrel doing its job. Move the bipod back or accept it as the price of the groups.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

• The mountain hunter: 9.5 lbs bare is the wrong direction. A Proof Research Elevation is 5 lbs 14 oz, and costs a great deal more for the privilege.
• The competition shooter: no 6mm Creedmoor and no 6 GT. A Tikka T3x Tac A1 at $2,087.10 or a Savage 110 Elite Precision at $1,897.43 will take you further.
• Anyone who wants a folding chassis: this is a molded stock with a chassis inside it. The Tikka folds and this does not.
• The buyer on a budget: a Bergara B-14 HMR is $1,039.99 and shares the stock design. Put the $500 into glass instead.
• Anyone buying on a printed accuracy guarantee: Bergara does not publish one for this rifle. If a guarantee is what closes the deal, buy a rifle whose maker prints it.

Final Verdict

Seven hundred rounds, a 0.7 inch average, and a zero that moved four tenths of an inch after the rifle came apart and went back together. The mini-chassis is not marketing, it is the reason this rifle behaves like something costing more.

At $1,549.99 it undercuts a Tikka Tac A1 by $537 and a Savage Elite Precision by $347. The only rifle that makes it think twice is Bergara’s own B-14 HMR at $1,039.99, and whether the Premier action is worth $500 depends entirely on how much you shoot.
