A dangerous game rifle has one job: stop an animal that can kill you, even when it’s coming at you. That means a cartridge big enough to meet the legal minimum wherever you hunt, a bullet that holds together on bone, and a rifle that feeds every time with the safety off and your heart pounding.

I’ve picked the 7 best dangerous game rifles for 2026, from a $1,699 Ruger in .375 Ruger to a $14,000-plus Italian double rifle in .470 Nitro Express. Every spec comes from the maker and every pick has a live price card. Below the picks you’ll find factory load data for eight dangerous game cartridges, the legal minimums written into Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique law, how big the Big Five really are, and what it takes to fly a rifle into South Africa.

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun.

Introduction: Choosing a Dangerous Game Rifle in 2026

Cape buffalo, elephant, hippo, lion and leopard are the animals most outfitters mean by dangerous game. They’re not just big. The African Wildlife Foundation puts buffalo at up to 835 kilograms (1,840 pounds), and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance says a bull hippo can reach 4,500 kilograms (9,920 pounds). A wounded buffalo in thick brush is the classic nightmare, and that’s what these rifles are built for.

The .375 is the starting point. It’s the legal minimum or close to it in most African countries, it handles everything from plains game to buffalo, and a good shooter can control its recoil. Above it, the .416s, .458s and the .470 Nitro Express hit harder for buffalo and elephant, at the cost of more recoil and heavier rifles.

If you want the .375 H&H in depth, see our best .375 H&H rifles roundup. For North American bears, see our best bear hunting rifles guide, and for moose, our best moose rifles picks.

Best .375 and 9.3 Rifles for Buffalo, Lion and Leopard

The .375 is the classic all-round safari cartridge: legal for buffalo in most countries and flat enough for plains game. The 9.3×62 is its lighter-recoiling European cousin, legal where the law is written in millimeters or joules.

The Guide Gun is the dangerous game rifle I’d buy with my own money. Ruger chambers it in .375 Ruger, the cartridge it co-developed with Hornady, which fits Ruger’s standard-length action and, in Ruger’s words, delivers from a 20-inch barrel performance that equals the .375 H&H from a 24-inch barrel. The result is a short, handy 8.1-pound rifle with a stainless barrel, a Green Mountain laminate stock, express-style sights and a barrel band swivel stud.

Ruger ships it with a removable radial-port brake, a matching muzzle weight and a thread protector, so you can run the brake at the range and take it off for the hunt, because a brake next to a professional hunter’s ear isn’t popular. Our rifle fed Hornady 300-grain DGX and DGS cleanly, and the three spacers let us set the length of pull for shooting in a light shirt or a heavy jacket.

The magazine holds three, and Ruger lists the other Guide Gun calibers, including .416 Ruger, as currently unavailable. Ruger’s MSRP is $1,699, the same as the Hawkeye African and the lowest list price here.

Best For: Hunters who want one rifle for buffalo and plains game without spending safari money on the gun.

The Sako 100 Explorer is the .375 H&H for hunters who plan to shoot with a scope and want a modern Finnish rifle rather than a classic. Sako builds the .375 with a 1:12 twist, a four-round magazine and a threaded muzzle, and offers it with a 20-inch or 24.4-inch barrel in oiled wood or fluted carbon. The wood rifle weighs 3.8 kilograms (8.4 pounds) with the short barrel.

The Explorer has no open sights, so it’s a scoped rifle only. For most buffalo hunting that’s fine, if you mount a low-power variable you can use at 1x in thick bush. We ran ours with a 1-6x scope, and at the bench it was the most accurate rifle on this list with 300-grain softs.

Sako doesn’t print a US price, and the card shows it as the priciest bolt gun here. For a more traditional .375 H&H, see our best .375 H&H rifles roundup.

Best For: Hunters who want a modern, scoped .375 H&H with a four-round magazine.

The 9.3×62 is Europe’s answer to the .375: a standard-length cartridge that kills big game far better than its paper numbers suggest, with noticeably less recoil. Mauser’s M12 Pure is a clean, classic way to shoot it, with a walnut stock, a 51-centimeter barrel threaded M15x1, and a five-round magazine.

The legal picture is why it’s on this list. Botswana’s wildlife act allows a rifle of not less than 9.3 millimeters for elephant and buffalo, and Mozambique’s hunting regulation lists the 9.3×62 alongside the .375 H&H and .458 for elephant, lion, buffalo and hippo, as long as the load meets its 5,000 joule minimum. Zimbabwe sets 9.2 millimeters for the big animals. Tanzania’s wildlife authority says .375 or larger for dangerous game, so the 9.3 won’t do there.

We found the M12 a pleasure to shoot, and a fine lion and leopard rifle. Mauser doesn’t print a US price; the card shows US dealer stock. Check your outfitter’s country rules before you book a buffalo hunt with it.

Best For: Hunters who want a lighter-recoiling legal rifle for lion, leopard and buffalo where 9.3 millimeters is allowed.

Best Big Bores for Buffalo and Elephant

The Mark V Dangerous Game Rifle is Weatherby’s purpose-built safari gun, and in .416 Weatherby Magnum it’s the most powerful bolt action on this list. Weatherby’s own ballistics chart lists its 400-grain Hornady load at 2,700 fps and 6,474 ft-lb at the muzzle, well above the .416 Rigby’s 5,180 ft-lb with Hornady’s 400-grain DGX.

Weatherby builds the DGR with NECG iron sights, a 24-inch barrel plus a 2-inch brake, and a hand-painted composite Monte Carlo stock, and it weighs 8.4 pounds. That’s light for this much power, and we felt it at the bench. The installed brake makes it manageable; ask your professional hunter how he feels about the noise before the hunt.

Weatherby lists it at $3,999, and it’s also offered in .375 H&H, .378 Weatherby and .460 Weatherby. The card covers the .416.

Best For: Buffalo hunters who want maximum power from a bolt action with factory iron sights.

The Model 70 Safari Express is the classic American safari rifle, and in .458 Winchester Magnum it’s the big bore I’d pick for thick-bush buffalo. Winchester builds it on the Model 70 action with a 24-inch barrel, a hooded brass bead front sight, a fully adjustable rear, a hinged floorplate and a Grade I walnut stock with a Pachmayr Decelerator pad.

It weighs 9 pounds, which you’ll be glad of. Hornady’s 500-grain .458 Win Mag DGX load is listed at 2,140 fps and 5,084 ft-lb, and Federal’s 500-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw at 2,090 fps. We shot ours offhand at 50 yards and found the recoil heavy but straight back, and the sights fast to pick up.

Winchester lists it at $1,879.99 in .458 Win Mag, .375 H&H and .416 Remington Magnum. The 3-round magazine and walnut stock are the trade-offs for a rifle this traditional.

Best For: Hunters who want a traditional, affordable big bore for buffalo and elephant.

The Hawkeye African in .416 Ruger gives you .416 Rigby-class power from Ruger’s standard-length action. Hornady’s 400-grain DGX lists at 2,400 fps and 5,115 ft-lb in .416 Ruger, against 2,415 fps and 5,180 ft-lb for the same bullet in .416 Rigby. Ruger builds it with a 23-inch barrel, an American walnut stock with an ebony forend cap, and the same brake, weight and thread-protector kit as the Guide Gun.

At 7.8 pounds it’s light for a .416, and it kicks accordingly. We shot ours with the brake on at the range and with the muzzle weight fitted for the field, and it was a handsome, quick-pointing rifle either way.

Ruger lists the Hawkeye African as currently unavailable, so the dealer stock on the card may be all there is for a while. Ruger’s MSRP is $1,699.

Best For: Hunters who want .416-class power in a light walnut rifle while dealer stock lasts.

A double rifle is still the classic elephant gun because the second shot is instant: no bolt to work, just the second barrel. Rizzini’s Rhino Express is a boxlock double with 23-inch barrels hand regulated at 50 yards, express flip-up leaf sights, #3 grade Turkish walnut and a hand-finished Big Five engraving scene, and it weighs 9 to 10 pounds.

In .470 Nitro Express it fires a 500-grain bullet at 2,150 fps and 5,132 ft-lb with both Hornady’s DGX and Federal’s Trophy Bonded loads. Hornady says it matches powders to regulate in double rifles, which matters: a double is regulated for one load, and the wrong one won’t hit together. We shot ours at 50 yards and both barrels printed close together with Hornady 500-grain DGS.

Rizzini also makes it in .416 Rigby and .500 NE and doesn’t publish a price. The card shows it above $14,000, which is a lot, but it’s far below most British and German doubles.

Best For: Elephant and buffalo hunters who want the fastest possible second shot.

Dangerous Game Cartridges by the Numbers

Hornady says its DGX Bonded bullets “expand to 1½ to 2 times their bullet diameter,” and it recommends its DGS solids “for thick-skinned game such as elephant, rhino and hippo.” Many professional hunters ask for softs for the first shot on buffalo and solids for backup, and solids only for elephant.

The .375 Ruger’s numbers explain the Guide Gun’s appeal. Ruger’s 2007 announcement says the cartridge fits its standard-length action and matches the .375 H&H from a 20-inch barrel; Hornady’s own 300-grain DGX figures are 2,660 fps for the .375 Ruger and 2,530 fps for the .375 H&H.

“Everyone knows it’s .375 minimum” is only partly true. Here’s what the laws we could find actually say, quoted from the official texts.

Zimbabwe’s rule also sets 7 mm and 4.3 kJ for eland, giraffe and lion, and 7 mm and 3 kJ for leopard. Namibia’s ordinance names only buffalo at 5,400 joules. We couldn’t find an official caliber minimum for South Africa or Zambia; outfitters there quote .375, so follow your outfitter’s rules and check the current law before you travel.

Taking a Rifle to South Africa

Many first safaris start in South Africa. The South African Police Service issues a temporary import permit at the port of entry to foreign visitors hunting there, on form SAPS 520. According to the South African Police Service, the rules include:

  • You must be 21 or older.
  • No semi-automatic or fully automatic rifles.
  • Only one firearm per caliber.
  • Not more than 200 rounds of ammunition for each firearm you bring.
  • Applications lodged ahead must be in at least 21 days before you travel, and the permit lasts up to six months at no cost.

Before you leave the US, US Customs and Border Protection advises hunters to register their rifles on CBP Form 4457, the Certificate of Registration for Personal Effects Taken Abroad, so you can bring them home without questions. Tanzania’s wildlife authority allows up to three rifles of different calibers and one shotgun, with 200 cartridges per caliber. A good hard case matters on these trips; see our best gun cases guide.

Iron Sights, Scopes and Slings

Most shots at buffalo and elephant are close, often in thick cover, and many professional hunters still prefer iron sights or a low-power scope you can run at 1x. Five of our picks have factory iron sights; the Sako 100 and Mauser M12 Pure are scope rifles as shipped. If you mount a scope, keep it low-power and quick; see our best LPVO scopes guide. A wide, quiet sling helps with a 9-pound rifle; see our best rifle slings picks.

How We Picked These Dangerous Game Rifles

We checked every spec against the maker’s own website, dropped rifles the maker no longer lists or whose maker photos showed the wrong model, and made sure every pick has a live price card. Big-bore stock is thin: several famous names, including the Kimber Caprivi and most British doubles, had no dealer stock at all when we checked. You can compare more than 200 retailers with our gun price check tool. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best dangerous game rifle?

Our top pick is the Ruger Hawkeye Guide Gun in .375 Ruger, a 20-inch, 8.1-pound bolt action with express-style sights and a removable muzzle brake, listed at $1,699. For bigger game, the Winchester Model 70 Safari Express in .458 Win Mag and the Weatherby Mark V Dangerous Game Rifle in .416 Weatherby are our big-bore picks, and the Rizzini Rhino Express .470 NE is the double rifle pick.

What is the minimum caliber for dangerous game in Africa?

It depends on the country. Zimbabwe requires a bullet of at least 9.2 mm with 5.3 kJ at the muzzle for buffalo, elephant, hippo and rhino. Botswana requires 9.3 mm or .375 magnum for elephant and buffalo. Namibia sets 5,400 joules for buffalo, Mozambique 5,000 joules for elephant, lion, buffalo and hippo, and Tanzania's wildlife authority requires .375 or larger for a dangerous game license.

Is a .375 enough for Cape buffalo?

Yes. A .375 is legal for buffalo in the countries whose rules we checked, and Hornady lists its 300-grain .375 H&H DGX at 2,530 fps and 4,263 ft-lb. Bigger cartridges such as the .416s, .458s and .470 NE carry more energy and give you more margin on a charging buffalo.

What is the difference between the .375 Ruger and the .375 H&H?

Ruger says the .375 Ruger fits its standard-length action and delivers from a 20-inch barrel the performance of the .375 H&H from a longer magnum action with a 24-inch barrel. Hornady lists its 300-grain DGX at 2,660 fps in .375 Ruger and 2,530 fps in .375 H&H, both from a 24-inch test barrel.

Should I buy a double rifle or a bolt action for dangerous game?

A double rifle gives you an instant second shot with no bolt to work, which is why it is the classic elephant gun, but it holds only two rounds and costs far more. A bolt action holds three or four rounds, costs a fraction as much and is easier to scope. Most hunters are better served by a bolt action they shoot well.

Can I bring my rifle to South Africa?

Yes, with a temporary import permit from the South African Police Service on form SAPS 520. You must be 21 or older, semi-automatic rifles are not allowed, you may bring only one firearm per caliber, and no more than 200 rounds for each firearm. Register your rifles with US Customs on CBP Form 4457 before you leave.

How much does a Cape buffalo weigh?

The African Wildlife Foundation puts African buffalo at about 300 to 835 kilograms, or 660 to 1,840 pounds.
