Quick Take

The Browning AB3 is Browning’s entry-level bolt-action hunting rifle. It sits below the X-Bolt 2 and keeps the things Browning owners like: a short 60 degree bolt lift, a detachable magazine and a top-tang safety. The Composite Stalker is the plain black version most people buy.

We put 300 rounds through an AB3 Composite Stalker in 6.5 Creedmoor, item 035800282. It never failed to feed, fire or extract. It averaged 0.94 inches at 100 yards with Hornady 143 grain ELD-X, and 1.2 inches across four hunting loads.

At $639.99 on the street, it costs more than a Savage Axis II or a Mossberg Patriot. You pay for a smoother action and the Browning name.

Best For: Deer and pronghorn hunters who want a smooth, simple rifle and will shoot three-shot groups from a cold barrel. Not for shooters who want a match-grade trigger or long strings at the bench.

Design Intent: Browning’s Entry-Level Bolt Gun

The AB3 is Browning’s lower-priced rifle under the X-Bolt, and a 2014 Browning article already called it “the new AB3.” The name nods to the old A-Bolt, and people still call it that. It is a different gun, though.

Browning’s own article on the difference says bases, rings and magazines made for the original A-Bolt and A-Bolt II “will not fit the AB3.” The AB3 magazine drops free, while the A-Bolt II’s is attached to a hinged floor plate. The AB3’s release sits in front of the magazine, and its bolt body is round.

The rest of the recipe is plain and proven. The barrel is free-floated and the chamber is polished. The bolt has a large surface area, and a top-tang safety sits where your thumb falls. A bolt lock override button lets you open the bolt with the safety on.

How to Tell an AB3 From an A-Bolt

This matters if you’re buying used, because A-Bolt II parts and scope bases will not fit. Browning says the last three digits of the serial number tell you the model. 358 is an AB3, 351 is an A-Bolt or A-Bolt II, and 354 is an X-Bolt.

Without a serial, look at the magazine. A plastic and metal magazine that drops into your hand, with the release in front of it, means an AB3. An all-metal magazine on a hinged floor plate, with the release next to the trigger guard, means an A-Bolt II.

Browning AB3 Variants

Browning lists a dozen current AB3 models, counting stock and color options. Here are the main ones with Browning’s list prices.

AB3 Composite Stalker: black composite stock, 22 or 26 in., 8 calibers From $639.99 street

AB3 Micro Stalker: 20 in. barrel, 13 in. length of pull, 4 short-action calibers $739.99 MSRP

AB3 Hunter: satin walnut stock with cut checkering; Pro Hunter adds fluting and threads $819.99 to $829.99 MSRP

AB3 Pro Composite: spiral fluted barrel and bolt, threaded muzzle, 7mm PRC option $739.99 MSRP

AB3 Pro Composite SPR: short suppressor-ready barrel, 5/8x24 threads $779.99 MSRP

AB3 OD Green Tungsten and Mossy Oak Bottomland $819.99 MSRP each

Here’s the detail the listings bury. Browning lists the AB3 Pro Composite at $739.99, the same as the plain Composite Stalker. For no extra list price you get a spiral fluted barrel and bolt, a threaded muzzle and a teardrop bolt knob, plus a 7mm PRC chambering.

Browning no longer makes the AB3 Stalker Long Range, Western Hunter, Composite Carbon Fiber or the scope combos. You’ll still see them used, and the .270 WSM and .300 WSM Stalkers are also out of production.

Competitor Comparison

The under-$800 deer rifle class is crowded. Here’s the AB3 against four rifles people cross-shop it with.

Ruger American Gen II (from $649.99)

The Gen II costs about $10 more and comes with a Cerakote finish, a threaded barrel and a user-adjustable trigger. It is the more modern package. The AB3 has the smoother bolt. See our Ruger American Gen II review.

Savage Axis II (from $464.99)

Verdict: The AB3 is the smoothest-cycling rifle in this group short of the Tikka, and it costs less than the Tikka. The budget guns beat it on trigger adjustment and price. For more options, see our best deer hunting rifles and best 6.5 Creedmoor rifles under $1,000.

Testing Protocol

Our test rifle was a new AB3 Composite Stalker in 6.5 Creedmoor, item 035800282, with a 3-9×40 scope in Browning’s integrated rings. We shot it over five range sessions in August and September, from 61 to 88 degrees, at 100 and 200 yards, and carried it on two scouting hikes.

Ammunition Log

  • Hornady Precision Hunter 143 gr ELD-X: 80 rounds
  • Federal Fusion 140 gr: 80 rounds
  • Winchester Deer Season XP 125 gr: 60 rounds
  • Hornady American Whitetail 129 gr InterLock: 80 rounds

Phase 1: Break-In and Zero

We cleaned the bore and fired the first 40 rounds one at a time, cleaning every ten shots for the first 20. The rifle zeroed at 100 yards in nine shots. Every round fed from the magazine and extracted cleanly.

Phase 2: Reliability

Across 300 rounds we had no failures to feed, fire, extract or eject. We cycled the bolt fast from the shoulder, loaded the magazine to four and topped off the chamber, and ran it from prone and off sticks. The magazine needs a firm push to click in. Seat it hard and it stays put.

Phase 3: Accuracy

We fired five three-shot groups per load at 100 yards off a bag, letting the barrel cool between groups. The ELD-X averaged 0.94 inches, Deer Season XP 1.15 inches, Fusion 1.28 inches and American Whitetail 1.43 inches. That’s a 1.2 inch average across all four.

Five-shot strings told a different story. With the ELD-X, groups opened to about 1.8 inches as the thin sporter barrel heated. The trigger broke at about 4 pounds 6 ounces on our gauge, with a little creep before the break.

Tracking & Observations

After 300 rounds the matte bluing showed a little rub wear at the muzzle from the truck rack and nothing else. Point of impact held between sessions, even after a hike and a bump against a fence post.

What This Means for You

  • Hunting Accuracy: Expect about 1 inch with good ammo from a cold barrel.
  • Ammo Preference: Premium bullets like the ELD-X grouped best.
  • Bench Sessions: Let the barrel cool between groups.
  • Magazine: Push it in until it clicks.
  • Used Rifles: Check the serial ends in 358 before you buy AB3 parts.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (8/10)

Zero malfunctions in 300 rounds. The only mark against it is the magazine, which can feel seated when it isn’t. That’s a habit to learn, not a flaw that stopped us.

Accuracy (8/10)

Sub-inch with the best load and 1.2 inches on average is good for a rifle at this price. It’s hunting accuracy, not bench accuracy, because groups grow as the barrel heats.

Ergonomics & Recoil (9/10)

The 60 degree bolt lift is the AB3’s best feature. It’s fast, and your hand clears the scope’s turrets without a bump. The top-tang safety is easy to reach, and recoil in 6.5 Creedmoor is mild at 6 pounds 10 ounces.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)

The bluing is even, and the polished bolt body looks sharp against the matte receiver. The composite stock sounds hollow when tapped, though it did not flex enough to touch the barrel.

Value (8/10)

At $639.99, the AB3 costs $175 to $251 more than the Axis II and Patriot. You get a smoother action and Browning’s feel. The Pro Composite, at the same list price, is the better buy if you find one at the same street price.

Features (7/10)

A detachable magazine, a bolt lock override, a free-floated barrel and a polished chamber. The Composite Stalker lacks a threaded muzzle and an adjustable trigger, both of which the budget rivals now offer.

Technical Deep Dive

Action, Safety and Magazine

The owner’s manual says the bolt lock override button sits just behind the bolt handle. Press it and you can lift the bolt with the safety on, to unload the chamber safely. A red cocking indicator under the bolt shroud shows when the rifle is cocked.

The manual also has a capacity quirk. It lists five rounds for standard calibers, but warns that a five-round long-action magazine “cannot be inserted into the rifle with the bolt closed.” Browning’s spec tables list four for most calibers, and that’s the number to plan on.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Magazine drops out: It needs a firm push until it clicks. Tug it after inserting.
  • Groups grow on long strings: The sporter barrel heats quickly. Shoot three-shot groups and let it cool.
  • Old scope bases don’t fit: A-Bolt and A-Bolt II bases and magazines won’t work. Buy parts marked for the AB3.
  • Five rounds won’t go in: In long-action calibers a full five-round magazine can’t be inserted with the bolt closed. Load four.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The AB3 is a good hunting rifle, but it is not the right pick for everyone.

  • Tight budgets: The Mossberg Patriot, from $388.99, shoots well for much less.
  • Bench shooters who want small groups: The Tikka T3x Lite, from $749, is the more accurate rifle.
  • Suppressor owners: The Composite Stalker has no threads. Look at the AB3 Pro Composite or the Ruger American Gen II, from $649.99.
  • A-Bolt II owners hoping to reuse parts: Bases and magazines don’t carry over. See our best hunting rifles guide for other options.

Final Verdict

The Browning AB3 is a smooth, reliable deer rifle with the best bolt in its price class. Ours ran 300 rounds without a hiccup and shot about an inch with good ammo from a cold barrel. Its weak spots are a trigger you can’t adjust and a thin barrel that walks on long strings.

For about $640 it’s a rifle you can hunt with for decades. If you want threads and fluting, look for the AB3 Pro Composite at a similar price. For more choices, see our best elk rifle guide.

Specs and prices in this Browning AB3 review come from Browning’s product pages for the AB3 Composite Stalker and AB3 Pro Composite, its owner’s manual and its A-Bolt article. Street prices are what our live cards showed on September 27, 2026.

Final Score: 8.0/10. A smooth, dependable Browning deer rifle at a working hunter’s price.

FAQ: Browning AB3

Is the Browning AB3 a good rifle?

Yes, for hunting. Ours ran 300 rounds with zero malfunctions and averaged 0.94 inches at 100 yards with Hornady 143 grain ELD-X. Groups opened to about 1.8 inches on five-shot strings as the barrel heated.

What is the difference between the AB3 and the A-Bolt?

They are different designs. Browning says A-Bolt and A-Bolt II bases, rings and magazines will not fit the AB3. The AB3 magazine drops free with a release in front of it; the A-Bolt II uses a hinged floor plate.

How do I tell if my Browning is an AB3?

Look at the last three digits of the serial number. Browning says 358 is an AB3, 351 is an A-Bolt or A-Bolt II, and 354 is an X-Bolt.

How much does the Browning AB3 cost?

Browning lists the AB3 Composite Stalker at $719.99 to $739.99. On September 27, 2026, Palmetto State Armory had one at $639.99.

Is the Browning AB3 discontinued?

No. Browning still lists the AB3 Composite Stalker, Micro Stalker, Hunter and Pro models. It has dropped the Stalker Long Range, Western Hunter and the scope combos.

How many rounds does the AB3 hold?

Browning lists 4 rounds for most calibers, 5 for 7mm-08 and 3 for the magnums. The manual warns that a full five-round long-action magazine cannot be inserted with the bolt closed.

Is the AB3 Pro Composite worth it?

Browning lists it at $739.99, the same as the Composite Stalker, with a fluted barrel and bolt, a threaded muzzle and a 7mm PRC option. At a similar street price it is the better buy.

Browning AB3 or Tikka T3x Lite?

The Tikka cost about $109 more on our cards and is the more accurate rifle with the better trigger. The AB3 has the shorter 60 degree bolt lift and costs less.
