We shot a black FN 545 MRD (66-101387) and a black FN 545 Tactical (66-101383). They ran 1,200 rounds between them with no stoppages. Recoil is softer than the numbers suggest, and both guns shot under 2 inches at 15 yards with good ammo.
Retailers hold the MRD on a wall at about $819 and the Tactical at about $999. One oddity stands out: the 10-round MRD cost more than the 15-round one at the two trusted sellers we checked.
Best For: Shooters who want a modern, high-capacity .45 for home defense, duty-style carry or a suppressor host. Not for small hands or anyone who wants a light trigger.
Design Intent: The FN 509 Idea in .45 ACP
FN says the 545 Tactical is “upgraded with the proven ergonomics of the FN 509 Tactical,” and it looks and handles like a bigger 509. The slide is machined steel with front and rear cocking serrations and a loaded chamber indicator. The barrel is cold hammer-forged with a target crown and a polished feed ramp and chamber.
The headline is capacity. The Glock 21 V holds 13 rounds, and the M&P45 M2.0 is listed at 10. The 545 MRD takes 15 and the Tactical ships with an 18-round extended magazine, using nickel-coated steel magazine bodies. FN’s own photos show the frame stamped FN COLUMBIA, SC USA.
Every 545 is cut for a red dot, and FN puts four mounting plates in the box rather than making you buy the right one. The steel sights are set to co-witness with most optics, and the Tactical’s are tritium.
The $819 Wall, and Why the 10-Round Gun Costs More
On September 27, 2026, Midway, Bass Pro and Classic Firearms had the FN 545 MRD at $819.00, and PSA and Sportsman’s Warehouse were at $819.99. Guns.com at $809.99 and Kentucky Gun Co at $778.57 were the only cracks we found. FN lists the MRD page at $930.00 to $1,099.00, a range that covers both the standard and the compensated Comp models.
The Tactical sat on its own wall at $999.00 to $999.99, about $151 under FN’s $1,151.00, with Kentucky Gun Co a little under at $987.99.
Here’s the odd part. The 10-round MRD, sold for states with magazine limits, cost more than the 15-round gun. PSA had the 10-round black MRD (66-101389) at $901.99 against $819.99 for the 15-round FDE, and Guns.com listed its 10-round black MRD at $857.99 against $809.99. If you’re in a free state, buy the 15-round version and save money.

FN’s Comp sell sheet lists the MRD Comp at 4.43 in. and 8.3 in. overall, with an auto-indexing FN compensator, at the same 30 oz as the standard MRD. We didn’t find it at a trusted seller when we checked.

Testing Protocol
We tested a black FN 545 MRD with two 15-round magazines (66-101387) and a black FN 545 Tactical with an 18 and a 15 (66-101383). We shot them over five sessions in September, from 59 to 86 degrees, at 7, 15 and 25 yards on the factory steel sights.
Ammunition Log

That’s 600 rounds through each pistol, 1,200 in total.
Phase 1: Break-In
Both guns started on American Eagle 230 gr with no cleaning beforehand. The slides felt tight for the first box and smoothed out after that. The 15-round magazines were stiff to load past about 12 until they’d been filled a few times.
Phase 2: Reliability
We had no stoppages in 1,200 rounds, including the +P Critical Duty and every hollow point. The only thing worth noting: loaded to a full 18 rounds, the Tactical’s extended magazine needed a firm slap to seat on a closed slide. Loaded to 17, it seated easily. Brass went right and slightly forward.
Phase 3: Accuracy
From a rest at 15 yards, the Tactical shot five-shot groups of 1.6 inches with Federal HST, 1.7 with Gold Dot and 2.1 with American Eagle. The MRD shot 1.7 inches with HST, 1.8 with Gold Dot, 2.0 with Critical Duty and 2.2 with American Eagle. At 25 yards the MRD held HST to 2.6 inches.
FN’s marketing calls the trigger “approximately 6 lb,” and its spec sheet says 5.5 to 7.7 lb. Our gauge read 6 lb 4 oz on the MRD and 6 lb 1 oz on the Tactical, with a clean break and a short reset.
Tracking & Observations
After 600 uncleaned rounds each, both guns showed normal carbon around the chamber and breech face and light wear on the barrel hood. Nothing loosened, and the steel sights held zero.

Groups of 1.6 to 1.7 inches at 15 yards with defensive ammo is very good for a full-size .45. The Tactical’s longer barrel gave it a small edge.
Ergonomics & Recoil (9/10)
The grip texture locks in without being sharp, and the backstraps help tune the fit. Recoil is a push rather than a snap. The catch is the width: at 1.45 in. and with a double-stack .45 magazine, the grip is a handful.

Slide machining is clean and even on both guns. The polymer frame is well molded but plain.
