Quick Take

The Rossi Circuit Judge is a five-shot Judge revolver on a long barrel with a rifle stock. Rossi says it was “inspired by the heralded Taurus Judge revolver,” and it takes the same two cartridges: .45 Colt and .410 shotshells up to 3 in. You get an 18.5 in. barrel, fiber optic sights and a rail for a red dot.

I shot 400 rounds through a hardwood SCJ4510, half .45 Colt and half .410. It fired every round. Spent 3 in. .410 hulls stuck twice, and with .45 Colt it grouped 3.1 in. at 50 yards on the iron sights.

It’s a fun, odd gun, and it has one real quirk. Like every revolver it vents hot gas at the gap between the cylinder and the barrel, and on a long gun that gap sits right where you might want to put your support hand. The manual has a whole warning about it. Keep your hand on the forend and your arm low and it’s a non-issue.

Best For: Small game, snakes and plinking on a farm or a trail, and anyone who likes the Judge but wants a stock and a longer barrel. Not for buyers who want a real shotgun pattern or a fast reload.

The Choke Rule and the Cylinder Gap

Two pages of the Circuit Judge manual matter more than the rest. The first is the choke. The gun ships with what Rossi calls a straight rifled choke for .410 shot. The manual says not to use it with .45 Colt or .410 solid slugs: you unscrew it with the choke key and fit the thread protector sleeve instead. Switch ammunition, switch the muzzle piece.

The second is the gap. The manual warns that “all revolvers discharge hot gas and particles” through the clearance between the cylinder and the barrel, and that your hands and arms must stay out of that path. It shows a correct grip with the elbow low and an incorrect one with the forearm raised near the cylinder. On a handgun nobody thinks about this. On a rifle you do, because the cylinder is a few inches in front of your trigger hand.

Rossi’s numbers don’t all agree, either. The product pages list every model at 85 oz and the SCJ4510 at 35.5 in. long. The manual gives 80.25 oz and 36 in. for the SCJ and 75 oz and 32 in. for the SCJT. The hardwood page’s spec block even lists the stock as polymer, while its title and photos show wood. Our scale read 5 lb 3 oz, or 83 oz, for the hardwood gun.

Design Intent: Why Rossi Built It This Way

The Judge revolver sells because it shoots .410 and .45 Colt from one cylinder. Rossi put that cylinder on a long gun and called it “the best of both worlds.” The long barrel adds velocity to .45 Colt and gives the shot column room, and the stock makes it a gun you can actually aim at 50 yards.

The double action/single action trigger lets you thumb the hammer for a careful shot or pull through for a fast one. The rail on the frame takes a red dot, and the fiber optic sights work well in the woods. Rossi’s pages list a Bainbridge, Georgia address, the same town as Taurus USA.

Competitor Comparison

The Circuit Judge doesn’t have a direct rival. These are the guns you’d buy instead for each half of what it does.

Taurus Judge ($380.16 to $428.99)

The revolver it’s based on. Same .45 Colt and .410 cylinder, five shots, in a gun you can holster. Guns.com had a Judge T.O.R.O. at $428.99, about $150 less than the Circuit Judge. You lose the stock, the long barrel and most of the useful range. Our Taurus Judge review covers it.

Henry Big Boy .45 Colt ($849.97 to $929.99)

If .45 Colt is what you want from a long gun, a lever action does it better. Palmetto State Armory had a 20 in. Big Boy with a 10-round magazine at $862.99. It’s more gun for more money, and it doesn’t shoot .410.

Mossberg 500 .410 ($376.86 to $413.80)

If .410 is the point, a pump shotgun is cheaper and patterns better. Sportsman’s Warehouse had a 24 in. Mossberg 500 .410 at $409.99, holding 5+1. It won’t shoot .45 Colt.

Verdict: The Circuit Judge is the only one of these that does both cartridges, and that’s the whole reason to buy it. For more on the ammunition, see our best .410 shotguns and our .45 Colt ammo guide.

Testing Protocol

We shot one gun, a hardwood SCJ4510, for 400 rounds over four sessions in September, from 60°F to 87°F. We shot .45 Colt at 25 and 50 yards and patterned .410 at 15 and 25 yards.

Ammunition Log

  • .45 Colt, 200 rounds: Winchester 255 gr lead round nose (100), Hornady Critical Defense 185 gr FTX (50), Federal 225 gr lead semi-wadcutter hollow point (50)
  • .410, 200 rounds: Winchester Super-X 3 in. #6 (100), Federal 2.5 in. #7.5 target loads (50), Winchester PDX1 Defender 3 in. (25), Remington 2.5 in. rifled slugs (25)

Phase 1: Break-In

I started with .410 target loads and the straight rifled choke installed, then switched to the thread protector before the first .45 Colt and the slugs, as the manual says. The swap takes a minute with the choke key. The double action pull was heavy and smoothed out a little over the first hundred rounds.

Phase 2: Reliability

All 400 rounds fired. Twice, spent 3 in. .410 hulls stuck in the chambers after about 60 rounds without cleaning, and I had to push hard on the ejector rod. A chamber brush fixed it. .45 Colt extracted cleanly throughout.

The cylinder gap is real. With 3 in. magnums you see a puff of gas and debris out to the sides. I kept my support hand on the forend and my elbow down, the way the manual shows, and never felt it.

Phase 3: Accuracy

With .45 Colt from a rest, single action, the iron sights gave 1.6 in. five-shot groups at 25 yards and 3.1 in. at 50 yards with the Winchester 255 gr load. With a red dot on the rail the 50-yard group tightened to 2.4 in. The Remington .410 slugs grouped 4.5 in. at 25 yards.

With #6 shot and the choke in, the Winchester 3 in. load put a usable pattern on a 20 in. circle at 15 yards and thinned out fast after that. It’s a snake and squirrel gun, not a bird gun. Our trigger gauge read 5 lb 2 oz single action and 12 lb double action.

Tracking & Observations

After 400 rounds the cylinder face and the barrel throat were heavily fouled, as on any revolver, and the forend had a light dusting of residue near its back edge. The finish wore at the muzzle where the choke key sits. Timing and lockup stayed tight.

What This Means for You

  • Reliability: Every round fired. Brush the chambers after about 50 rounds of .410.
  • Ammo Preference: 255 gr .45 Colt was the most accurate. 3 in. #6 for shot.
  • Accuracy Expectation: About 3 in. at 50 yards with irons, better with a dot.
  • Maintenance: Swap the choke for the thread protector before any .45 Colt or slug.
  • Upgrade Impact: A small red dot on the rail is the best addition.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (8/10)

Everything fired. Sticky .410 hulls in a dirty cylinder cost it points.

Accuracy (7/10)

Good with .45 Colt for a revolver-based gun. The .410 patterns are short-range only.

Ergonomics & Recoil (6/10)

Recoil is mild in a gun this heavy. The cylinder gap limits where your hands can go, the double action pull is heavy, and reloading five rounds one at a time is slow.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (7/10)

The polished black finish and the hardwood are nicer than I expected at this price. The action is gritty when new, and the wood-to-metal fit around the frame is fair rather than tight.

Value (7/10)

Under $700 for a hardwood gun is fair. A Judge revolver plus a .410 pump costs about $140 more and does each job better.

Features (7/10)

Two cartridges, a rail, fiber optic sights, adjustable rear sight and a removable choke. Only five rounds.

Technical Deep Dive

Frame and Cylinder

An aluminum alloy frame with a five-shot cylinder in alloy steel or stainless, chambered for .45 Colt and .410 up to 3 in. A transfer bar keeps the hammer off the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled.

Barrel and Choke

An 18.5 in. alloy steel barrel threaded at the muzzle for the choke. Shot goes through the straight rifled choke. Bullets and slugs go out with the thread protector sleeve fitted instead.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Shooting .45 Colt through the choke: The manual says not to. Fit the thread protector sleeve for bullets and slugs.
  • Gas and debris on your arm: Keep your support hand on the forend and your elbow low, as the manual shows.
  • Sticky .410 hulls: Brush the chambers every 50 rounds or so.
  • Point of impact changes between loads: .45 Colt and slugs hit differently. Zero for the one you’ll use most.
  • +P .45 Colt: The manual allows +P only in the Rossi models it lists, and the Circuit Judge isn’t one of them. Stick to standard loads.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The Circuit Judge is a specialist’s toy that does two jobs fairly well. Some buyers want one job done properly.

  • Bird and small game hunters who want a shotgun: The Mossberg 500 .410 patterns better and holds 5+1.
  • Buyers who want a .45 Colt rifle: The Henry Big Boy .45 Colt holds 10 and reloads faster.
  • People who want something to carry: The Taurus Judge is the same cylinder in a handgun.

Final Verdict

The Rossi Circuit Judge fired all 400 rounds, shot .45 Colt into 3.1 in. at 50 yards on the irons, and threw short-range .410 patterns good enough for snakes and squirrels. It’s heavy, slow to reload, and you have to respect the cylinder gap and the choke rule.

Buy it because you want one gun that does both cartridges and you think that’s fun. Pay street, not the $907.99 list: the hardwood gun was under $700. For the handgun version, read our Taurus Judge review, and for Rossi’s lever gun, our Rossi R95 review.

Final Score: 7.0/10. A fun two-cartridge farm gun that’s best at neither.

FAQ: Rossi Circuit Judge

Is the Rossi Circuit Judge a good gun?

It is a fun one. Ours fired 400 rounds of .45 Colt and .410 with two sticky hulls in a dirty cylinder, and shot .45 Colt into 3.1 in. at 50 yards with the iron sights.

What does the Rossi Circuit Judge shoot?

It shoots .45 Colt and .410 bore shotshells up to 3 in. from a five-shot cylinder.

How much does a Rossi Circuit Judge cost?

Rossi lists it at $907.99, or $972.99 with a stainless cylinder. On October 2, 2026, Palmetto State Armory had the hardwood SCJ4510 at $696.99.

No. The manual says to remove the straight rifled choke and fit the thread protector sleeve for .45 Colt and .410 solid slugs.
