Quick Answer: The best gun safe hygrometer for most people is the Hornady Digital Hygrometer: a touchscreen that records the high and low humidity, runs on two AAA batteries and costs about $20. If you want to read the safe without opening it, get the Hornady Wireless Hygrometer. Whichever you buy, salt-test it before you trust it, because none of these makers publishes an accuracy figure.

Keep the safe between 40 and 50 percent relative humidity, and judge it by the recorded high, not whatever the screen says when you open the door. Below are four picks with live prices, the 24-hour salt test, and how to correct a reading that’s off.

Table of Contents

How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun.

Read the High, Not the Number on the Screen

Here’s the mistake I see most. Someone opens the safe on a dry winter afternoon, the screen says 41 percent, and they decide the safe is fine. Then August arrives, the slab sweats, and the inside sits at 60 percent for two weeks while nobody’s looking.

Rust doesn’t care about the average. It cares about how long the steel spends above the line. That’s why a hygrometer with high/low memory is worth paying for. The Hornady units let you choose between an all-time record, which holds the extremes until you clear them, and a 24 hour record that resets itself every day.

My routine is simple. I leave it on all-time, read the high once a week, and clear it on the first of the month. If the monthly high stays at or under 50 percent, the dehumidifier is doing its job. If it creeps past 50, I add capacity before it becomes rust.

The Humidity Target, and the Icon That Gets It Wrong

Keep the inside of the safe between 40 and 50 percent relative humidity, the same target as our gun safe humidity control guide. Liberty Safe and the NRA both put the ceiling at 50 percent. Under about 30 percent, wooden stocks can dry out and crack.

Now the catch. Hornady’s wireless hygrometer shows a little house icon that reads COMF, WET or DRY. Its manual defines COMF as anything between 30 and 60 percent. That’s a comfort range for people, not a storage range for steel. A safe sitting at 58 percent gets a happy COMF label and a slow coat of rust. Ignore the icon and read the number.

This is the hygrometer I recommend in our gun safe accessories guide, and it earns the top spot here for the same reason: it does the one job that matters, recording the high, without making you fiddle. Two touch buttons along the bottom handle everything. One flips Fahrenheit and Celsius. The other switches the memory between all-time and 24 hours, and a three-second hold clears it.

Mount it with the quick-connect bracket on the inside wall at about mid-height. That keeps it off the shelf and puts the screen where you see it every time you reach for a gun. Hornady’s manual has two care notes worth following: keep it free of dust, which it says can affect accuracy, and press the screen with a fingertip, not a fingernail.

Best For: Any safe. If you only buy one hygrometer, buy this one and salt-test it the day it arrives.

Every time you open the safe to check the humidity, you let room air in and change the reading you came to see. The wireless version fixes that. The remote sensor lives inside the safe, and the base display sits on a shelf in the room, so you can glance at the high on your way past.

Hornady rates it at 100 feet unobstructed, and a closed steel safe is about as obstructed as it gets. Test the link before you commit: put the remote inside, shut the door, and watch the signal icon on the base. Hornady says it blinks while connecting and stays solid once paired. In my basement the base had to sit in the same room as the safe, a few feet away, to hold a solid link.

Two more notes from the manual. If you swap batteries in the remote only, you’ll need to re-pair it by holding the Remote/Base button, so change both sets together. And as I covered above, ignore the COMF icon. It’s happy up to 60 percent.

Best For: Basement and garage safes you don’t open often, and anyone who wants to watch the humidity without disturbing it.

SnapSafe is a Hornady company, and its hygrometer covers the same 10 to 99 percent humidity range as the Hornady model. What you give up is convenience. There’s no 24 hour mode, just a max/min record and a Clear button on the back. It stands on a fold-out leg rather than clipping to a wall bracket.

That makes it a good second gauge. I keep one on the floor of a full-size safe and the Hornady at mid-height. If the two disagree by more than a few points after both have passed a salt test, the bottom of the safe really is damper than the middle, and that tells you where the dehumidifier should go.

Best For: A tight budget, a second gauge for a big safe, or a gun cabinet.

A dead battery is a hygrometer that tells you nothing, and you won’t notice until you look. The Lockdown dial has no battery to die. Stick it inside with the hook-and-loop tape and it just keeps pointing.

The trade-off is real, though. A dial shows you right now and nothing else, so it can’t tell you the safe hit 62 percent last Tuesday. Reading a small dial to the nearest couple of percent takes squinting, and analog gauges are the ones I’ve seen drift most. Salt-test it before you trust it, and again every season.

Best For: A backup gauge, a rarely opened safe where batteries would die unnoticed, or a cheap sanity check next to a digital unit.

How to Salt-Test a Gun Safe Hygrometer

None of the four makers publishes an accuracy figure for these gauges, so you have to check yours. The salt test is the standard way. A damp paste of ordinary table salt holds the air in a sealed space at about 75 percent relative humidity, and both Protimeter and wikiHow use that 75 percent figure as the reference point.

  1. Fill a bottle cap with table salt and add just enough water to make a thick, damp paste. It should clump, not dissolve.
  2. Put the cap and the hygrometer in a zip-top bag and seal it. Don’t let the paste touch the gauge.
  3. Leave it at steady room temperature, out of sun and drafts, for 24 hours.
  4. Read it through the bag without opening it. A perfect gauge says 75 percent.

Then decide what to do with the result. Protimeter’s own guidance for its professional meters is a good yardstick for a $20 gauge too:

Salt test readsOff byWhat I do
72 to 78 percent0 to 3 pointsKeep it and use it as is
70 to 71 or 79 to 80 percent4 to 5 pointsRetest, then correct for the offset
Under 70 or over 80 percentMore than 5 pointsReplace it

How to Correct a Hygrometer That Reads Off

None of these four has a calibration adjustment, so you correct the number in your head instead. Work out the offset from the salt test and move your limit to match.

Say your gauge reads 71 in the salt test. It’s 4 points low. When the screen says 46, the safe is really at 50. So your ceiling on that gauge is 46, not 50, and your floor is 36, not 40. Write the offset on a piece of tape on the back so you don’t have to remember it.

A gauge that reads high errs on the safe side, since you’ll run the dehumidifier harder than you need to. A gauge that reads low is the dangerous one. It shows 46 while your guns sit at 50, and that’s exactly the error a salt test catches.

What to Do With the Reading

A hygrometer is only useful if the number changes what you do. After a month of all-time highs and lows, here’s how I read it. These are the same rules as in our accessories guide, so the two pages won’t send you in different directions.

Monthly readingWhat it meansWhat to do
High stays under 50 percentThe safe is dry enoughKeep checking monthly
High creeps to 50 to 60 percent in summerNot enough drying capacityAdd a rod, or a second rechargeable unit
High goes over 60 percentThe safe is in a damp spotRun a rod and a desiccant together, and look at where the safe sits
Low drops under 30 percent in winterToo dry for wood stocksUnplug the rod for the season
A sudden jump after a range tripWet gear came in with the gunsDry guns, cases and slings before they go back in

That last row catches people out. A rifle case that rode home in a rainy truck bed can carry more water into a safe than the dehumidifier pulls out in a day. If the high spikes the week after a wet hunt, it’s the gear, not the safe. Leave cases and soft gear outside to dry first. If the high stays over 60 for months, the location is the problem, and our guide on where to put a gun safe covers better spots than an unheated garage slab.

Where to Put a Hygrometer in a Gun Safe

  • Mid-height on a side wall. It’s where the long guns’ actions sit, and the Hornady bracket is built for it.
  • Away from the dehumidifier. A heated rod warms the air right around it, and warm air reads drier. A gauge next to a GoldenRod flatters the whole safe. I keep at least a foot between them.
  • A second gauge low in big safes. On a concrete slab the bottom of the safe runs cooler and damper. Two gauges, top and bottom, tell you whether the dehumidifier is placed right.
  • Give it time after you close the door. Opening the safe swaps in room air. Read the recorded high, or wait an hour before you trust a spot reading.

What Gun Safe Hygrometers Cost

These are the price ranges our retailer feeds showed in October 2026. The cards above update live.

HygrometerPrice rangeBatteries
Lockdown analog$9 to $14None
SnapSafe digital$16 to $232 AAA
Hornady digital$20 to $23 at most of our retailers2 AAA
Hornady wireless$24 to $434 AAA

Every one of these costs less than a single rust-pitted barrel would to refinish. If you’re torn, buy the Hornady digital for the safe and a Lockdown dial as a backup. That’s about $30 for two independent readings.

How I Picked These

I only picked hygrometers sold as safe accessories by safe and storage brands and carried by our retailers, so every price card shows real numbers. Specs come from Hornady’s and SnapSafe’s instruction sheets and product pages, and from retailer listings for the Lockdown dial. Generic hygrometers sold for kitchens and humidors work too, but the ones here are built and mounted for safes. Nothing on this page is sponsored.

A hygrometer only tells you there’s a problem. Fixing it is the dehumidifier’s job, and our best gun safe dehumidifiers roundup covers which one to pair with which safe.

FAQ: Gun Safe Hygrometers

What is the best hygrometer for a gun safe?

The Hornady Digital Hygrometer suits most safes. It records the high and low humidity, either all-time or over 24 hours, mounts on a wall bracket and runs on two AAA batteries for about $20. The Hornady Wireless Hygrometer is the pick if you want to read the safe without opening it.

What humidity should a gun safe be?

Keep it between 40 and 50 percent relative humidity. Liberty Safe and the NRA both put the ceiling at 50 percent, and below about 30 percent wooden stocks can dry out and crack. Judge the safe by the recorded high, not the reading when you open the door.

How do I check if my hygrometer is accurate?

Do a salt test. Mix table salt with just enough water to make a damp paste in a bottle cap, seal it in a zip-top bag with the hygrometer, and wait 24 hours. A perfect gauge reads 75 percent. Within 3 points is fine, 4 to 5 points means correct for the offset, and more than 5 means replace it.

Can you calibrate a gun safe hygrometer?

Not the Hornady, SnapSafe or Lockdown units, since none has an adjustment. Salt-test it and correct the reading instead. If it reads 71 in the salt test, it is 4 points low, so treat 46 on the screen as your 50 percent ceiling.

Where should a hygrometer go in a gun safe?

Mount it mid-height on a side wall, at least a foot from any heated dehumidifier rod, which warms the air around it and makes the safe read drier than it is. In a big safe on a concrete floor, add a second gauge near the bottom, where the air runs cooler and damper.

Do wireless hygrometers work through a gun safe?

Sometimes. Hornady rates its wireless hygrometer at 100 feet unobstructed, and a closed steel safe blocks a lot of that. Put the remote sensor inside, close the door and check that the signal icon on the base stays solid before you mount anything.
