Quick Answer: The best range bag for most shooters is the Savior Equipment Specialist Range Bag: three padded, lockable pistol sleeves, a magazine panel and a semi-rigid frame for about $110. The 5.11 Range Ready Bag is the better-organized pick, with removable ammo and brass totes. If you only bring one or two pistols, the Savior Specialist Mini or the Bulldog Deluxe 2 Pistol bag does the job for less.

Pick the bag by how many guns you bring and how much ammo you carry, not by how tactical it looks. A loaded range bag gets heavy fast, so I’ve worked out what yours will weigh before you buy. Every pick has a live price card.

Match the Bag to How Many Guns You Bring

Most people buy a range bag that’s too big. A 43 liter bag with two pistols in it is just a heavier way to carry two pistols. Here’s how I’d size it.

You bringBag typePicks
1 or 2 pistols, a few boxes of ammoMini or two-pistol bagSavior Mini, Bulldog Deluxe, BlackHawk Sportster
3 or 4 pistols, a full session of ammoStandard range bagSavior Specialist, 5.11 Range Ready, Elite Loadout
3 pistols and a long walk from the carRange backpackGPS Tactical Range Backpack
5 or more pistols, or a case of ammoRolling bagGPS Tactical Rolling Range Bag
A rifle tooRange bag plus a separate rifle caseAny of the above

That last row matters. None of these bags carries a rifle. If you shoot a rifle and pistols the same day, you’re carrying two things no matter what, so keep the pistol bag small. Competition shooters have different needs again, and our competition range bags guide covers carts and bags by sport.

What a Loaded Range Bag Actually Weighs

Nobody else seems to do this math, and it’s the thing that decides whether you want a shoulder strap, a backpack or wheels. I put my usual ammo on the kitchen scale. Here’s what it came to:

AmmoBoxWeight on my scale
9mm, 115 grain FMJ50 roundsAbout 1.4 lb
.45 ACP, 230 grain FMJ50 roundsAbout 2.4 lb
.22 LR, 40 grain500 round brickAbout 3.8 lb
.223 Remington, 55 grain20 roundsAbout 0.5 lb
12 gauge, 1 1/8 oz target load25 shellsAbout 2.5 lb

Now add it up for a normal pistol day. Three pistols, eight magazines, ear and eye protection, a stapler and targets, and 300 rounds of 9mm. The ammo alone is about 8.4 pounds. Put all of it in the 5.11 bag, which weighs 6.2 pounds empty, and you’re carrying a little over 20 pounds on one shoulder.

That’s fine from the car to a bench 50 feet away. It’s miserable over a quarter mile of gravel to an outdoor bay. My rule: under about 20 pounds, a shoulder bag is fine. Over that, or for a long walk, get a backpack. If you’re bringing a case of ammo or a pile of pistols, get wheels.

Pew Pew Tactical, Outdoor Life and Gun University all land on a Savior bag somewhere in their lists, and it’s easy to see why. The Specialist does the basics right. Three padded sleeves each take a pistol, and because each sleeve locks on its own, you can carry them into the range cased and pull out only the gun you’re shooting.

The semi-rigid frame is the part I value most. Soft range bags slump when they’re half full, and you end up digging for a box of ammo in a pile. This one stands open on the bench. The magazine panel up front means loaded mags stay upright and visible instead of rattling around the bottom.

Best For: Three or four pistols and a normal session’s worth of ammo. If you only own one handgun, skip down to the Mini.

2. 5.11 Range Ready Bag 43L: Best for Organization

  • Capacity: 43 liters, 2,639 cubic inches
  • Main compartment: 9.5 x 17.5 x 10.5 inches, padded storage for multiple pistols
  • Magazines: Zip-down organizer holds 8
  • Extras: Removable ammo tote, removable brass tote, water bottle pocket
  • Weight: 6.2 lbs empty

Pros

  • Removable ammo and brass totes
  • Eight-mag zip-down organizer
  • Pockets for everything else

Cons

  • Heavy at 6.2 lbs empty
  • Big for one or two pistols
  • Big bag invites overpacking

If you’re the kind of shooter who wants a place for everything, this is the bag. The removable ammo tote is the feature I’d pay for alone: fill it at home, carry it to the bench, and the boxes come out together instead of one at a time. The brass tote does the same job in reverse, so picking up your empties doesn’t mean loose brass rolling around the bottom of the bag.

The cost is weight. At 6.2 pounds empty it’s the heaviest shoulder bag here, and 43 liters invites you to overpack. Fill it to the brim and you’ll be well past the 20 pound line I talked about above.

Best For: Shooters who reload and keep their brass, and anyone who brings a lot of small gear.

3. Savior Equipment Specialist Mini Range Bag: Best Small Range Bag

  • Pistols: 2 cushioned pistol pockets
  • Size: About 13 x 9 x 8 inches outside
  • Magazines: Two detachable pouches hold up to 6
  • Extras: Two detachable dump pouches, lockable pockets, shoulder strap

Pros

  • Compact but holds two pistols
  • Detachable mag and dump pouches
  • Lots of colors

Cons

  • Room for only a few boxes
  • No rigid frame
  • Six mags maximum

This is the bag I grab for a quick lunchtime session at an indoor range. If you shoot that often, check whether a range membership would pay for itself. Two pistols, a couple of boxes, eyes and ears, done. It’s Pew Pew Tactical’s editor’s pick, and for most people who shoot a carry gun and one other pistol, it’s honestly all the bag they need.

The detachable dump pouches are a nice touch. Clip one to the bench rail and your empty mags and brass go straight in. Just don’t try to pack 300 rounds in it. At this size you’re bringing what you’ll shoot today, not a reserve.

Best For: Indoor ranges, short sessions, and anyone with one or two handguns.

4. Bulldog Cases Deluxe 2 Pistol Range Bag: Best Budget Range Bag

  • Holds: 2 pistols and 8 magazines
  • Build: Water-resistant nylon with MOLLE webbing
  • Carry: Adjustable, removable shoulder strap
  • Extras: Large zippered accessory compartment

Pros

  • Cheapest bag on this list
  • Holds eight magazines
  • MOLLE for add-on pouches

Cons

  • Thinner padding than the Savior
  • No lockable pistol sleeves
  • Small for long sessions

Not everyone needs a $100 bag. The Bulldog costs about half as much as the Savior Mini, still carries two pistols and eight mags, and the MOLLE webbing lets you add a pouch later. For a first range bag, or a spare that lives in the truck, it’s hard to argue with.

You give up protection and organization. The padding is thinner, and there are no individual lockable sleeves, so the pistols ride together in the main compartment. Put each one in its own soft case and it’s fine.

Best For: First-time buyers, a backup bag, and anyone on a tight budget.

5. BlackHawk Sportster Pistol Range Bag: Best Two-Pistol Bag With Rugs

  • Holds: 2 handguns, in two included flannel-lined rugs
  • Size: 16 x 9 x 8 inches
  • Build: 600 denier polyester with PVC laminate, dual-density foam padding
  • Extras: Two exterior slash pockets, lockable zippers, MOLLE webbing

Pros

  • Two pistol rugs included
  • Dual-density foam padding
  • Lockable zippers

Cons

  • Only two handguns
  • Fewer pockets than the 5.11
  • Stock is spotty at some retailers

The Sportster’s selling point is that it comes with the pistol rugs. Two flannel-lined rugs go inside, so each gun is cased on its own when you walk into the range, which a lot of indoor ranges want. With most other bags you buy those separately.

BlackHawk uses two kinds of foam: open-cell against the guns and closed-cell for impact. In practice that means it protects better than the budget bags. It’s a two-pistol bag though, full stop. If you think you’ll want a third, buy the Savior Specialist instead.

Best For: Indoor ranges that want guns cased, and owners of two nice pistols they want to keep unscratched.

6. Elite Survival Systems Loadout Range Bag: Best Heavy-Duty Range Bag

  • Holds: 4 firearms in the main compartment
  • Size: 17 x 10 x 11 inches
  • Magazines: Front pouch holds 8, side pouch takes 2 to 4 AR mags
  • Build: Heavy nylon, closed-cell foam padding throughout, luggage rails on the bottom

Pros

  • Four guns in one bag
  • Luggage rails protect the bottom
  • Holds pistol and AR mags

Cons

  • Big and heavy when loaded
  • Sold by few of our retailers
  • More bag than most need

This is the bag for people who are hard on gear. Thick nylon, closed-cell foam all the way around, and luggage rails on the bottom so it doesn’t wear through after a season of being dropped on gravel and concrete. Outdoor Life included it in its tested picks, and I’d call it the most rugged shoulder bag here.

The side pouch for 2 to 4 AR magazines is a smart detail if you shoot a carbine alongside your pistols. Just remember the weight math above. Four guns and the ammo to feed them is a heavy load for a shoulder strap.

Best For: Outdoor ranges, rough handling, and pistol-plus-carbine days.

7. GPS Tactical Range Backpack: Best Range Backpack

  • Pistols: 3 removable padded cases, each holding 1 pistol and 4 magazines
  • Frame: Rigid honeycomb frame with lockable YKK zippers
  • Carry: Padded waist belt and chest strap
  • Extras: Pull-out rain cover, front pocket that folds flat into a work surface

Pros

  • Weight rides on your hips
  • Three removable pistol cases
  • Rain cover and fold-flat front

Cons

  • Digging to the bottom is slower
  • Pricier than shoulder bags
  • No room for a rifle

Once a loaded range bag goes past about 20 pounds, I’d rather carry it on my back. The GPS backpack puts the weight on a padded waist belt, which is the difference between a pleasant walk to a far bay and a sore shoulder for the rest of the day.

The three removable pistol cases are the clever part. Each holds one pistol and four magazines, so you can carry a single case to the line and leave the pack at the bench. The front pocket unzips and folds down flat into a small work surface, which is handy at outdoor ranges with no bench at all.

Best For: Outdoor ranges with a walk from the parking lot, and anyone with a bad shoulder. If you want something with a softer look, our range bags for women guide covers the GPS Handgunner backpack too.

8. GPS Tactical Rolling Range Bag: Best for Big Loads

  • Pistols: Foam cradle holds 6, plus 4 internal pockets for 4 more
  • Cradle: Closed-cell foam that won’t absorb moisture
  • Carry: Wheels and a pull handle

Pros

  • Up to ten handguns
  • Wheels take the weight
  • Foam cradle keeps guns upright

Cons

  • Most expensive bag here
  • Wheels struggle on gravel
  • Overkill for a few pistols

For a big pistol day, or teaching a class where you bring guns for students, wheels beat everything. The foam cradle holds six pistols upright, and four more fit in internal pockets. Load it with that many guns and their ammo and you’re well past anything you’d want on a strap.

Wheels have one weakness, and it’s gravel. On a paved lot and a concrete range floor it’s the easiest bag here. On a rutted outdoor range path you’ll end up carrying it by the handle, and then it’s heavy.

Best For: Instructors, collectors with a lot of handguns, and indoor ranges with paved access.

Range Bag Features That Matter, and Ones That Don’t

Product pages list a dozen features each. After a lot of range trips, these are the ones I’d actually pay for.

  • Separate padded pistol storage. Worth it. Sleeves, rugs or removable cases keep guns from banging into each other and let you carry one gun to the line cased. Every pick here has some version of it except the Bulldog, which needs soft cases added.
  • Lockable zippers. Worth it. A small padlock through the zipper pulls won’t stop a thief, but it keeps curious kids out at home and satisfies ranges that want guns locked in a case.
  • A frame or stiff sides. Worth it. A bag that stands open on the bench is faster to work out of than one that collapses into a heap. The Savior Specialist and the GPS backpack both have one.
  • A protected bottom. Worth it outdoors. Range benches are wet and range ground is gravel. Rails or a tough base, like the Elite Loadout’s, add years to a bag.
  • A magazine organizer. Worth it. Loaded mags upright in a row beat a pile in the bottom, and you can see at a glance how many are ready.
  • MOLLE webbing everywhere. Mostly decoration. It’s useful if you’ll actually clip a pouch on. Most people never do.
  • Sheer size. Not a feature. A bigger bag just lets you carry more weight than you need. Buy the bag for your normal session, not your biggest one.

One more thing that matters more than any feature: color and ID. At a busy range with ten black bags on ten benches, a bright tag or an ID patch saves you from walking off with someone else’s gear. Savior sells its bags in several colors, which is a small reason I like them.

What I Keep in My Range Bag

A range bag is only as good as what’s in it. This is my standing list, and it fits in every bag above except the smallest two once you add ammo.

  • Ear protection, plus a spare set of foam plugs. Electronic muffs let you hear range commands. Our ear protection guide covers the options.
  • Eye protection. Wraparound, impact rated. See our shooting glasses picks.
  • Targets, a stapler and pasters.
  • A small first aid kit. Something that handles a cut hand from a slide bite, and ideally a tourniquet.
  • A mag loader, a multitool and a bore snake.
  • A brass bag if you reload or your range asks you to pick up.
  • Water and sunscreen for outdoor ranges.

One habit worth adopting: keep the guns cased and unloaded in the bag until you’re at the bench. Every range I shoot at requires it, and it’s the reason lockable sleeves and pistol rugs matter more than they look.

How I Picked These

I started with the bags that show up across the most trusted reviews, including Pew Pew Tactical’s hands-on test and Outdoor Life’s tested list, then kept the ones our retailers actually stock so every price card shows real numbers. Specs come from 5.11’s own product page and from retailer listings for the rest, since several makers don’t publish full specs. Ammo weights are from my own scale and will vary a little by brand. Nothing here is sponsored.

FAQ: Range Bags

What is the best range bag?

For most shooters, the Savior Equipment Specialist Range Bag. It has three padded, individually lockable pistol sleeves, a magazine panel and a semi-rigid frame that keeps it open on the bench, for about $110. The 5.11 Range Ready Bag is better organized, with removable ammo and brass totes.

What size range bag do I need?

Size it by how many guns you bring. One or two pistols fit a mini or two-pistol bag like the Savior Specialist Mini. Three or four pistols suit a standard bag like the Savior Specialist or 5.11 Range Ready. Five or more, or a case of ammo, is a job for a rolling bag.

How heavy is a loaded range bag?

Heavier than you think. A 50-round box of 9mm weighs about 1.4 pounds, so 300 rounds is about 8.4 pounds before the bag, guns and gear. Three pistols and a day of 9mm in the 5.11 Range Ready Bag comes to a little over 20 pounds. Past that, a backpack or rolling bag is easier to carry.

Should I get a range backpack or a range bag?

Get a backpack if you walk a long way from the car or your load goes past about 20 pounds, because a waist belt carries the weight better than a shoulder strap. A shoulder bag is quicker to dig through at the bench and fine for short carries to an indoor range.

Can I carry a rifle in a range bag?

No. These bags are built for handguns, magazines, ammo and gear. Carry a rifle in its own case and keep the pistol bag small, or look at a competition setup if you shoot several guns at once.

What should I keep in a range bag?

Ear and eye protection, a spare set of foam plugs, targets, a stapler and pasters, a small first aid kit, a mag loader, a multitool, a bore snake and a brass bag, plus water and sunscreen for outdoor ranges. Keep guns cased and unloaded until you are at the bench.
