Suppressors got a lot easier to own this year, and the ammo makers have noticed. Hornady has built a whole rifle line around the short-barrel, can-on setup instead of leaving you to make do with standard loads. Here is what is in it.

What Hornady Announced
Hornady put out its 2027 new products release on October 14, 2026 from Grand Island, Nebraska. The first item in it is a new line, SBR Suppressed Supersonic, and the pitch is direct: “Suppressed SBRs and AR pistols demand ammunition built specifically for the job.”
There are four loads, each with an ELD Match bullet. Item 81244 is 5.56 NATO 73 gr, 81614 is 6mm ARC 108 gr, 81013 is 300 Blackout 178 gr and 81053 is 308 Win 178 gr.
Hornady says the products will be sold through stocking dealers and the big sporting goods chains. The release does not give prices or a ship date for any of the new ammunition, and we will not guess at either.
Why Short Suppressed Barrels Need Their Own Ammo
A short barrel burns less of its powder before the bullet leaves, and a suppressor adds back pressure that pushes more gas and carbon into the action. Most rifle loads are built around a 20 inch or 24 inch barrel, so in a 10 inch AR pistol with a can they can run dirty and harder on parts than they need to.
Hornady’s answer, on the SBR Suppressed line page, is two things. First, “Propellants engineered for ideal supersonic velocity and pressure.” Second, “Clean-burning propellants reduce fouling in the action, gas system and suppressor.”
Those are Hornady’s claims, not test results, and we have not shot the line yet. But the problem it is aimed at is real for anyone who has cleaned a direct impingement upper after a day with a can on it.
The Numbers Hornady Has Published
Two of the four loads have product pages with ballistics so far. The 300 Blackout 178 gr is listed at 1,725 fps and 1,176 ft-lb from a 16 inch test barrel, and still carries 1,378 fps and 751 ft-lb at 300 yards.
That is a heavy bullet for a supersonic 300 Blackout load, and it is the interesting one in the line. Most 300 Blackout shooters run light supersonics or heavy subsonics, and this sits between them: a 178 gr match bullet kept above the speed of sound.
The 6mm ARC 108 gr is listed at 2,620 fps and 1,646 ft-lb from an 18 inch test barrel. Both pages sell the ammo 20 rounds to a box. Hornady has not yet posted ballistics for the 5.56 and 308 loads that we could find.
One caution on those figures. They are from 16 and 18 inch test barrels, and the whole point of this line is shorter ones, so expect less speed from an AR pistol. Our 300 Blackout vs 5.56 comparison covers how each cartridge behaves in a short barrel.
Six New Subsonic XTP Handgun Loads
The same release expands Hornady’s Subsonic handgun line with XTP hollow points in six calibers: 9mm Luger 147 gr, .357 Magnum 180 gr, .40 S&W 180 gr, 10mm Auto 200 gr, .44 Rem Mag 300 gr and .45 Auto 230 gr.
For suppressor owners that is the more practical half of the news. Subsonic handgun ammo keeps the bullet under the speed of sound, so there is no supersonic crack to undo the work the can is doing.
Hornady also listed Frontier 7.62×51 and 7.62×39 FMJ loads, a 6.8 Western 176 gr ELD-X in Precision Hunter, and a Critical Defense 12 gauge #1 buck load among its other new ammunition.
Why This Is Landing Now

Hornady was named Ammunition Manufacturer of the Year by NASGW on October 20. A family-owned company since 1949, it now has a line with “SBR” and “Suppressed” in the name. That says where the market is going.
