The best AR-15 foregrip for most people is the BCM Gunfighter Vertical Grip Mod 3. It’s short, it weighs 1.9 ounces, its forward angle puts your wrist in a natural position, and BCM sells it for $18.95. If you want an angled grip instead, get the Magpul M-LOK AFG, and if you shoot an AR pistol, get the BCM KAG or a hand stop, because a vertical grip on a pistol is a federal problem.
Below are eight foregrips and hand stops for M-LOK, KeyMod and Picatinny rails, with specs from each maker’s own page, live prices from our 200+ retailers checked on October 25, 2026, and the two legal traps most guides on page one skip: the ATF’s rule for pistols and the states that ban foregrips outright.

Vertical, Angled or Hand Stop: Which Do You Need?
- Vertical grip: You wrap your hand around it like a pistol grip. It gives you the most to hold when you pull the rifle into your shoulder and to drive it between targets. It also sticks out the furthest.
- Angled grip: It rakes forward along the handguard. Your hand stays flat and high on the rail, closer to the bore, with your wrist bent less. It snags less on gear and doubles as a rest on a barricade.
- Hand stop: A small stop at the front of your support hand. It gives you a repeatable index point for a thumb-over-bore grip and stops your hand sliding toward the muzzle. It’s the lightest option.
Most shooters who run a modern thumb-over-bore grip end up on a short vertical, an angled grip or a hand stop. A long vertical grip suits shooters who hold the grip itself, like a second pistol grip. On an AR pistol, only the angled grip and hand stop are options without paperwork, which we cover below.

1. BCM Gunfighter Vertical Grip Mod 3: Best AR-15 Foregrip Overall
- Type: Short vertical grip with a forward angle; can be mounted in reverse
- Mount: Direct attach M-LOK; KeyMod and Picatinny versions too
- Weight: 1.9 oz
- List price: $18.95 at BCM (MSRP $21)
Pros
- Natural wrist angle
- Short, low-snag profile
- Made in the USA
Cons
- Plain polymer, no storage
- Short for big hands
- Black or FDE only
The BCM Vertical Grip Mod 3 is the grip I’d put on a new rifle first. BCM gave it a “low-profile length for increased mobility and decreased snag factor”, and a forward angle that it says “increases the rigidity of the forearm, while providing a more natural wrist angle.” You can also flip it around and mount it in reverse.
The flat sides carry an aggressive texture that BCM says gives “better yaw control”, which in plain terms means your hand doesn’t twist around it when you drive the rifle sideways. It weighs 1.9 ounces, it’s made in the USA, and BCM sells it for $18.95. It comes in M-LOK, KeyMod and Picatinny versions, so it fits almost any handguard.
Best For: Nearly every AR-15 rifle or carbine, especially if you can only buy one grip.

2. Magpul M-LOK MVG: Best Budget Vertical Grip
- Type: Vertical grip, model MAG597
- Mount: M-LOK slots on aluminum or polymer handguards
- Size: 3.0 in. long, 1.4 oz with hardware
- List price: $22.95 at Magpul
Pros
- Lightest vertical grip here
- Under $20 at most retailers
- Made in the USA
Cons
- M-LOK only
- Plain styling
- No rubber overmold
The M-LOK MVG is the cheapest good vertical grip you can buy. Magpul lists it at $22.95, and our retailers regularly sell it for less. It’s 3 inches long and weighs 1.4 ounces with the mounting hardware, the lightest vertical grip on this list.
Magpul says the vertical geometry “places the support hand closer to the bore centerline for consistent rifle management and efficient target transitions.” It bolts straight into M-LOK slots on aluminum or polymer handguards. It doesn’t do anything fancy, which is the point: it’s a light, solid grip for the price of a box of ammo.
Best For: Budget builds and anyone who wants a vertical grip without spending more than $25.

3. Daniel Defense Vertical Foregrip: Best Premium Vertical Grip
- Type: Vertical grip, glass-infused polymer with soft-touch rubber overmolding on both sides
- Mount: M-LOK version, or a Picatinny version with a sealed storage compartment
- Size: M-LOK 3.31 in. tall, 1.7 oz; Picatinny 4.5 in. tall
- List price: $40 at Daniel Defense
Pros
- Rubber grip, wet or dry
- Picatinny version stores parts
- Made in the USA
Cons
- Twice the price of BCM
- Separate SKUs per rail
- Picatinny version is long
The Daniel Defense Vertical Foregrip costs twice what the BCM does, and what you get for it is the grip surface. Daniel Defense builds it from glass-infused polymer “finished off with soft-touch rubber overmolding on both sides for a secure, comfortable grip.” The M-LOK version is 3.31 inches tall, weighs 1.7 ounces and has a slim, hollow body.
The Picatinny version is the one with a trick: a “watertight storage compartment capable of storing small parts”, sealed with dual O-rings. It’s also longer, at 4.5 inches. Both list at $40 at Daniel Defense and both are made in the USA.
Best For: Shooters who want a rubber grip surface, and Picatinny rifles where a spare battery compartment is handy.

4. Magpul M-LOK AFG: Best Angled Foregrip
- Type: Angled fore grip, model MAG598
- Mount: M-LOK slots on aluminum or polymer handguards
- Picatinny option: AFG-2 ($34.95), which needs a $9.95 adapter rail for M-LOK
- List price: $26.95 at Magpul
Pros
- The original angled grip design
- Keeps your hand high on the bore
- Made in the USA
Cons
- Picatinny needs the AFG-2
- M-LOK only
- Weight not published
Magpul’s AFG is the grip that made angled foregrips popular, and the M-LOK AFG is its current, compact version. Magpul says it “positions the shooter’s hand high on the centerline of the bore, helping mitigate recoil and control the firearm to facilitate faster, more accurate follow-up shots.” It bolts straight into M-LOK slots and lists at $26.95.
If your rifle has a Picatinny rail, Magpul’s AFG-2 is the version for you at $34.95. Magpul also sells an AFG-2 M-LOK adapter rail for $9.95, but on an M-LOK handguard, the M-LOK AFG is the simpler and cheaper choice.
Best For: Shooters who want a flat, high hand position with more to hold than a hand stop.

5. BCM Gunfighter KAG: Best Foregrip for AR Pistols
- Type: Kinesthetic Angled Grip, a short angled grip and hand stop
- Mount: M-LOK; KeyMod and Picatinny versions too
- Designed with: Travis Haley, Haley Strategic Partners
- List price: $18.95 at BCM (MSRP $21)
Pros
- Not a vertical grip
- Built for thumb-over-bore
- Barely adds girth
Cons
- Less to hold than a VFG
- Weight not published
- Black, FDE or Wolf Gray only
The KAG came out of BCM’s work with Travis Haley. BCM says its “biomechanically efficient forward rake” gives “positive retention when using ‘C-clamp’ (thumb over bore) method of handguard support” and relief to the wrist, elbow and shoulder, without much added girth. It’s textured front and back, and BCM notes it “works as a rest for supported firing positions.”
It’s our AR pistol pick for a simple reason: it’s an angled grip, not a vertical one, and it’s short enough for a pistol-length handguard. BCM sells it for $18.95, the same as the Mod 3, so you can buy both for under $40.
Best For: AR pistols, short handguards and anyone who shoots with a thumb-over-bore grip.

6. Strike Industries LINK Curved Foregrip: Best Aluminum Angled Grip
- Type: Curved angled grip with a rear hand stop
- Material: 6061-T6 aluminum
- Mount: LINK system fits M-LOK and KeyMod rails
- Size: 4.83 in. long, 1.74 in. high, 1.7 oz
- List price: $43.95 at Strike Industries
Pros
- Aluminum, not polymer
- Fits M-LOK and KeyMod
- Rear curve works as a stop
Cons
- Priciest grip here
- Long, uses rail space
- Cold to touch in winter
Every other grip on this list is polymer. The LINK Curved Foregrip is machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, and Strike Industries derived it from its Cobra Tactical Fore Grip. Its LINK mounting system “is mountable to both M-Lok and Keymod rails”, so it moves between rifles with different handguards.
Strike Industries says the rear curve works as a hand stop and the grip offers barricade stop functionality. It’s 4.83 inches long and weighs 1.7 ounces, and Strike lists it at $43.95. Don’t overtighten it: Strike says not to exceed 20 in-lbs on the LINK screws.
Best For: Shooters who want metal, and owners with both M-LOK and KeyMod rifles.

7. Emissary Development Handbrake X: Best Hand Stop
- Type: Forward-swept hand stop with front and rear barricade stops
- Material: Glass-filled polymer and rubber, steel hardware, 300+ degree heat resistance
- Size: 1.9 x 1.1 x 2.1 in., 1.2 oz, spans 1.5 M-LOK slots
- List price: $35 at Emissary Development
Pros
- Rubber inlay where you grip
- Two barricade stops
- Lifetime warranty
Cons
- M-LOK only
- Pricier than a plain stop
- Little to hold onto
If you want the least on your handguard, get a hand stop, and the Handbrake X is the best one we found. It’s 1.9 inches long, weighs 1.2 ounces and spans 1.5 M-LOK slots. Emissary builds it from glass-filled polymer with a rubber texture inlay, rates it for 300+ degrees of heat and puts front and rear barricade stops into the body.
It’s made in the USA, carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects and lists at $35. One catch from Emissary’s own FAQ: “The Handbrake X is only compatible with M-LOK handguards.”
Best For: Thumb-over-bore shooters, light builds and AR pistols.

8. Magpul RVG: Best Foregrip for Picatinny Rails
- Type: Vertical grip, model MAG412
- Mount: 1913 Picatinny rails; M-LOK adapter rail sold separately
- Size: 3.5 in. long, 2.6 oz with hardware
- List price: $24.95 at Magpul
Pros
- Fits any Picatinny rail
- Cheap and proven
- Made in the USA
Cons
- Heaviest grip here
- Longer than the MVG
- Needs adapter for M-LOK
Older quad-rail rifles still need a Picatinny grip, and the RVG is the easy answer. Magpul says it “mounts directly to any 1913 Picatinny rail” and that “the vertical footprint preserves rail space for additional accessories.” It’s 3.5 inches long and weighs 2.6 ounces, more than the M-LOK grips, and lists at $24.95.
Best For: Quad-rail and Picatinny handguards.
Can You Put a Vertical Foregrip on an AR Pistol?
Not without registering it first. This is the question a reader asked in the comments of one of the top-ranking foregrip guides, and most of the guides don’t answer it.
The ATF’s position is in a letter titled “Adding a Vertical Fore Grip to a Handgun”. Federal law defines a handgun as a firearm “designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.” The ATF says that “by installing a vertical fore grip on a handgun, the handgun is no longer designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.” The result is an “any other weapon”, or AOW, under the National Firearms Act.
The penalties are serious. The same letter says making an unregistered AOW “is punishable by a fine and 10 years’ imprisonment”, and possessing one carries the same penalty. To do it legally, you file an ATF Form 1 and wait for approval before you install the grip.
- On a rifle with a 16 inch or longer barrel, a vertical grip is fine under federal law.
- On an AR pistol, a vertical grip makes it an AOW unless you register it first.
- Angled grips and hand stops: the ATF letter is about vertical fore grips. That’s why AR pistol builders run a KAG, an AFG or a Handbrake instead.
See our best AR pistols for complete guns, and talk to an NFA dealer before you put anything vertical on a pistol.
States That Ban Foregrips on AR-15s
Federal law isn’t the only rule. Some states count a foregrip as an assault weapon feature.
- California: Penal Code 30515 makes a semiautomatic centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine an assault weapon if it has any listed feature, and the list includes “a forward pistol grip.” The state’s regulations, 11 CCR 5471, define it as “a grip that allows for a pistol style grasp forward of the trigger.” If you run a featureless rifle, a vertical grip is out. See our California legal AR-15s.
- New York: Penal Law 265.00 lists “a second handgrip or a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand” among the features that make a semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine an assault weapon. More in our New York gun laws guide.
Other states with feature-based laws use their own wording. Read your state’s statute before you order, and don’t rely on a retailer shipping it to you as proof that it’s legal where you live.
M-LOK, KeyMod or Picatinny: Match the Mount
- M-LOK: Slots in the handguard. Most new rifles use it, and every grip on this list except the RVG comes in an M-LOK version.
- KeyMod: Keyhole-shaped slots on older free-float rails. BCM makes the Mod 3 and KAG in KeyMod, and Strike’s LINK Curved fits both KeyMod and M-LOK.
- Picatinny (1913): Raised rail on quad rails and many military-style handguards. Get the RVG, Daniel Defense’s Picatinny grip or BCM’s Picatinny versions.

Where to Put Your Foregrip
- Start where your hand lands. Shoulder the rifle with your eyes closed, reach out naturally, and mount the grip where your hand ends up.
- Leave room for the light switch. If you run a weapon light with a pressure pad, place the grip so your thumb or finger reaches the switch without shifting your grip.
- Mind the heat. Grips mounted near the gas block get hot fast. Emissary rates the Handbrake X for 300+ degrees of heat.
- Torque the screws. Use the hardware the maker supplies and follow its torque limit, like Strike’s 20 in-lbs on LINK screws.
How I Picked These Foregrips
I looked at what each grip does for control, how much rail it uses, how it mounts and what it weighs, and I covered the three types so every rifle and pistol has a pick. Specs and quotes come from each maker’s own product page, the legal sections quote the ATF letter and the state statutes directly, and prices come from our live price check across 200+ retailers on October 25, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AR-15 foregrip?
For most rifles, the BCM Gunfighter Vertical Grip Mod 3. It is short, weighs 1.9 ounces, has a forward angle for a natural wrist position and sells for $18.95 at BCM. It comes in M-LOK, KeyMod and Picatinny versions.
Is a vertical or angled foregrip better?
A vertical grip gives you more to hold when you pull the rifle into your shoulder. An angled grip keeps your hand flat and high on the rail, snags less and works as a barricade rest. Thumb-over-bore shooters often prefer an angled grip or a hand stop.
Can I put a vertical foregrip on an AR pistol?
Not without registering it. The ATF says a vertical fore grip means a handgun is no longer designed to be fired with one hand, which makes it an any other weapon (AOW) under the NFA. You need an approved ATF Form 1 before you install it.
Is an angled foregrip legal on an AR pistol?
The ATF letter on this topic is about vertical fore grips, which is why AR pistol builders use angled grips like the BCM KAG or Magpul AFG, or hand stops like the Handbrake X. Check your state law as well.
Are foregrips legal in California?
Not on a featureless rifle. California Penal Code 30515 lists a forward pistol grip as an assault weapon feature on a semiautomatic centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine, and the regulations define it as a grip that allows a pistol style grasp forward of the trigger.
Are foregrips legal in New York?
New York Penal Law 265.00 lists a second handgrip or a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand as an assault weapon feature on a semiautomatic rifle with a detachable magazine.
What is the best cheap AR-15 foregrip?
The Magpul M-LOK MVG. Magpul lists it at $22.95, retailers sell it for less, and at 1.4 ounces with hardware it is the lightest vertical grip on our list. The BCM Mod 3 and KAG are also under $20 at BCM.
Will an M-LOK foregrip fit a Picatinny rail?
No. M-LOK grips bolt into slots, not onto a rail. For Picatinny, buy a Picatinny grip like the Magpul RVG, or add a short Picatinny rail section to your M-LOK handguard.
