Bear Creek Arsenal is the bottom of the barrel price-wise, and I mean that literally. Their complete uppers with BCG and charging handle regularly sell for under $200. That’s less than some people spend on a trigger alone. At that price, you need to manage expectations.
Will a BCA upper run? In my experience, yes. Will it shoot sub-MOA? Almost certainly not. Expect 2-3 MOA groups with decent ammo and a prayer. The fit and finish ranges from “acceptable” to “did they even look at this?” But here’s the thing: for $170, you can build a complete AR-15 for under $350, and that gun will go bang when you pull the trigger.
I wouldn’t bet my life on a BCA upper, but for range plinking, introducing new shooters, or building a beater .300 Blackout upper, it fills a niche that nothing else does. Inspect it, test it, and run it.

Why “Upper” Means Three Different Things
Search for an AR-15 upper and you will get results from about $110 to about $1,200, which makes the whole category look like nonsense until you realise the word is doing three jobs at once. I went through what the retailers actually list while updating this page, and the split is consistent.

The trap is the first row. A stripped upper receiver at $120 looks like an incredible deal next to a $500 complete upper, and people buy one thinking they have made a saving. They have bought an empty aluminum shell. By the time you add a decent barrel, a handguard, a gas block and a bolt carrier group you are past what the complete upper cost, and you have done the work yourself.
Worth knowing too: genuinely complete uppers are thin on the ground. While pricing this page I found several well-regarded brands, BCM and Criterion among them, where the retail network carries the barrels and the bare receivers but no finished upper at all. That is not a knock on those brands. It just means “buy a complete upper from X” is sometimes advice you cannot act on, and it is worth checking before you settle on a build.
One last thing that catches people. A complete upper does not include a bolt carrier group or a charging handle unless the listing says so, and the cheaper the upper the less likely it is. Chrome-Lined vs Nitride: Which Barrel Treatment?
Chrome-lined barrels last longer under high-volume fire and handle corrosive ammo better. They’re the military standard for a reason. Most chrome-lined barrels will go 15,000-20,000+ rounds before meaningful accuracy degradation. The downside is a slight accuracy penalty compared to nitride, on the order of 0.25 to 0.5 MOA.
Nitride (QPQ/Melonite) barrels are more accurate out of the box and cheaper to produce. They’re plenty durable for most civilian shooters (10,000+ rounds easily).
