Springfield Echelon 4.0FC Picked by Spain’s National Police

Last updated October 2026 · By Nick Hall, who put 1,000+ rounds through the Springfield Echelon for our review

Quick take: Spain’s National Police has adopted the Springfield Armory Echelon 4.0FC 9mm as the issued pistol for its uniformed officers, after trials against pistols from numerous international makers. For a pistol that only launched in 2023, that is a serious endorsement.

  • What changed: The Policía Nacional picked the Echelon 4.0FC as the issued pistol for its uniformed officers, Springfield announced on October 28, 2026.
  • Why it matters: A national police force ran the Echelon through accuracy, barrel obstruction, temperature, drop and parts interchangeability tests and chose it over the field.
  • Affects: Spain’s uniformed national police officers, plus any US buyer weighing the same 4.0FC, which lists at $710 MSRP here.
  • What’s next: Springfield has not published a unit count, a contract value or a delivery schedule, so the size of the order is still unknown.

Most police pistol news is one US department swapping guns, the kind of story nobody outside the county reads. This one is different. A national police force in Europe ran its own trials against pistols from numerous international makers and chose a gun that did not exist before 2023.

What Spain’s Policía Nacional Actually Picked

Springfield’s release, dated October 28, 2026 out of Geneseo, Illinois, says the Spanish National Police has officially adopted the Echelon 4.0FC 9mm “as the issued pistol for its uniformed officers.” That is the whole headline, and it is a big one.

The Policía Nacional is Spain’s national civilian police force. Springfield’s release lists its responsibilities as policing urban areas and large cities, counter-terrorism operations and immigration enforcement, among others.

The gun is the 4.0FC, the middle configuration of the Echelon family. It pairs a full-size grip and 17+1 or 20+1 capacity with a compact slide and 4-inch barrel. Springfield calls it “a balanced, do-it-all platform.”

Springfield and HS Produkt developed the Echelon together, and it launched in 2023. Since then, the release says, it “has been adopted by numerous agencies and departments across the United States” and earned the gold ranking in the National Tactical Officers Association’s Member Tested and Recommended program.

The Trial Protocol the Echelon 4.0FC Had to Clear

This was not a handshake deal. The release says the Echelon was “Pitted against offerings from numerous international firearms manufacturers,” with Lejarazu Sport SLU representing the gun during the process.

The tests covered intensive shooting and accuracy work, barrel obstruction testing, durability across a temperature range from minus 4°F to 122°F (minus 20°C to 50°C), drop testing and verification that parts interchange between guns. Springfield says the 4.0FC “met or exceeded all the requirements” and was the pistol the evaluation team selected.

And modularity mattered to the Spanish evaluators too. According to the release, they noted the pistol’s ability to be quickly converted to other configurations, such as compact variants, which comes straight from the serialized Central Operating Group that moves between grip modules in seconds.

“The Echelon family of pistols was designed from the ground up to provide a duty-grade 9mm pistol ready for a wide range of applications,” said Dennis Reese, owner and CEO of Springfield Armory. Zeljko Pavlin, CEO of HS Produkt, said the selection “validates all that has been invested in the design.”

The Echelon 4.0FC You Can Buy in the US

We pulled the spec sheet straight from Springfield so you don’t have to. The US-market Echelon 4.0FC, model EC9409BFC-U, lists at $710 MSRP. It has a 4-inch hammer-forged barrel with a Melonite finish and a 1:10 twist, a billet machined optics-ready slide and a full-size grip module with a compact dust cover.

It weighs 24 oz with the flush magazine and 25 oz with the extended one. Length is 7.25 inches, height is 5.5 inches with the flush magazine and grip width is 1.2 inches. Two magazines ship in the box, one 17-round and one 20-round, along with a tritium and luminescent front sight, a Tactical Rack U-Dot rear and a captive recoil system.

One thing the release does not settle is the exact configuration. Springfield’s photo shows a 4.0FC with a manual thumb safety, and Springfield lists a separate 4.0FC with manual safety as an international model, but the release never says which version Spanish officers will carry. Nor does it give a unit count or a contract value.

What a Police Adoption Tells a Civilian Buyer, and What It Doesn’t

Here’s the useful part for a US buyer. A national police force wrote a list of requirements, ran several makers’ pistols against it and picked this one. That tells you the 4.0FC cleared a demanding, documented bar on reliability, durability and drop safety, and that its parts interchange cleanly from one gun to the next.

What it does not tell you is just as real. Agencies weigh unit price, local representation (Lejarazu Sport SLU handled this one), training, holsters and their own safety preferences, none of which matter at your gun counter. An agency gun can also differ from the one at a US dealer in details such as a manual safety.

If you were already cross-shopping a duty-size 9mm with optics on top and a full grip, this win is a reasonable tiebreaker. If you carry a compact or want something lighter, it changes nothing, and the 4.0C or the Echelon Alpha is the better place to look.

We put more than 1,000 rounds through a full-size 4.5F for our Springfield Echelon review, and it fed everything we gave it, duty and range ammo alike, held 2-inch groups at 25 yards and earned a 9.1 out of 10, so a national police force deciding the same chassis is worth issuing to its officers does not surprise us much. The 4.0FC runs that chassis and the same 17- and 20-round magazines on a shorter slide.

A three-year-old pistol. A national police force. Springfield gets to put both in the same sentence now.
