Best Calibers for AR Pistols
5.56 NATO / .223 Remington is the default choice and the best all-around caliber for AR pistols. Ammo is cheap and widely available. The recoil is manageable. The terminal performance is proven. The only downside is that 5.56 loses velocity quickly in short barrels, so you want at least 10.3 inches of barrel to get reliable fragmentation from M193 and M855 ammunition.
