Quick Answer: The Accuracy International AXSR is the best sniper rifle you can buy in 2026 if money is no object, the multi-caliber successor to the AX system used by elite military and law enforcement units worldwide. Sub-half-MOA out of the box with a quick-change barrel system that makes caliber swaps a 10-minute job.
Best semi-auto sniper platform: the Knights Armament SR-25 (KA-25). Best 50 BMG anti-materiel: the Barrett M82A1, the legendary cartridge in the gun that brought it to Hollywood. Best military pedigree: the Barrett MRAD, the rifle the military’s Mk22 is built on. Best entry-level precision rifle: the Ruger Precision Rifle. Best bullpup precision: the Desert Tech SRS M2.
The biggest mistake first-time sniper-rifle buyers make is dropping $4,000+ on the rifle and mounting a $500 scope on it. Precision shooting at 800-1,500 yards demands a $2,000+ optic that tracks repeatably, returns to zero, and holds parallax at extended distances.
Choosing a long-range cartridge? Our 6.5 Creedmoor vs .300 Win Mag breakdown covers recoil, energy and range.
How we tested: Every pick here is ranked against our testing methodology. Minimum round counts, accuracy and reliability protocols, the failures that disqualify a gun.

What Is a Sniper Rifle?
A sniper rifle is more than a long gun with a scope. It is a precision instrument built to deliver tight groups at long distances with consistency. You feel the difference the first time you run the bolt, adjust the chassis system, or settle into prone behind a rifle that was engineered for serious accuracy. Modern sniper rifles serve military units, law enforcement teams, competition shooters, and civilian marksmen who value repeatable performance. They blend engineering, ergonomics, and materials in a way that separates them from general purpose hunting rifles or simple target setups.
This sniper rifle buyer’s guide breaks down the best sniper rifles you can buy in 2026. You will see premium bolt action rifles, semi auto sniper platforms, long range magnums, multi role adaptive designs, and one extreme budget option that still teaches new shooters the fundamentals. Each rifle on this list has a role, a purpose, and a clear advantage for the precision shooter who wants reliable performance.
Modern precision rifles need to balance stability, barrel quality, action strength, and chassis design. They must hold tight groups, manage recoil, track with optics, and maintain accuracy in cold weather, hot climates, and field environments. The rifles on this list represent the top choices for long distances, including extremely long range shooting with cartridges like 300 PRC, Lapua Magnum, and 50 BMG. If you want to find the best sniper rifle for training, law enforcement work, special operations style roles, or long range competition, you will find a clear option here.
Two things separate a sniper rifle from a hunting rifle with a scope on it. The first is repeatability: the same point of impact, cold bore after cold bore, which comes down to barrel quality, action stiffness and how well the rifle sits in its chassis. The second is the optic, which does at least as much work as the rifle and is where most first-time budgets go wrong. Bolt actions still win on outright accuracy because less moves during ignition, while semi-autos trade a little of that for a fast second shot.

A sniper rifle doesn’t have to cost five figures. On October 26, 2026, four of these ten started under $2,100: the Mossberg Patriot at $355.42, the Sig Sauer Cross at $1,600.99, the Ruger Precision Rifle at $1,839.99 and the Tikka T3x TAC A1 at $1,999.99. The Accuracy International AXSR sits at the other end at $11,505.
This is the complete, updated list of the best sniper rifles available in 2026.
Table of Contents

1. Accuracy International AXSR
- Action: Bolt action
- Calibers: Multi caliber
- Highlights: chassis system, long distances precision, elite build quality
Overall Winner
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 2/5 | 4.5/5 | 2.5/5 | 4/5 | 5/5 |
Pros
- Top tier precision and build quality
- Highly adjustable ergonomic system
- Multi-caliber modular capability
Cons
- Costs a lot of money
- Heavy, so portability takes a hit
- Parts are expensive and availability is an issue

The Accuracy International AXSR is widely viewed as the best sniper rifle in the world for serious precision shooters. It is a premium bolt action rifle with a stiff chassis system built for stability under recoil. The AXSR supports conversion kits, so you can run cartridges like 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Win, Winchester Magnum, Norma Mag, or Lapua Magnum depending on your mission. The oversized bolt handle cycles smoothly, the adjustable trigger feels predictable, and the long barrel options control harmonics across long distances.
Best For: precision shooters, long range competition, multi role missions.

2. Barrett M82 / M107
- Action: Semi automatic
- Caliber: .50 BMG
- Highlights: anti material rifle, muzzle brake, threaded barrel
Best Semi Auto Sniper Rifle
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 2/5 | 4/5 | 1.5/5 | 4.5/5 | 4/5 |
Pros
- Real military grade toughness and durability
- Built as an anti-materiel rifle
- Iconic piece of American history
Cons
- Serious money for one gun, but less than it was
- Heavy, like really heavy
- Not as accurate as you might think

The Barrett M82 is the most iconic semi auto sniper rifle ever built. It is a powerful anti material rifle chambered in .50 BMG with a huge muzzle brake to handle recoil. It is recoil-operated with a rotating bolt, and the moving barrel and big brake together are what make a semi-auto .50 shootable from the shoulder. On October 26, 2026, the cheapest M82A1 in our feed was $8,639.99, and Palmetto State Armory had it at $9,518.99. This rifle appears in military and special operations units across the world. It offers unmatched energy on target and excellent effective range.
The Barrett M107 is largely the same gun, evolved with more lightweight parts that made it better for use in the field for military applications. That might make the Barrett M107A1 a more appealing option for you. If you want Barrett build quality in a precision bolt gun instead, the Barrett MRAD has its own spot at number 6.
Best For: anti material roles, extremely long range shooting, military style precision.

3. Tikka T3x TAC A1
- Price: from $1,999.99
- Action: Bolt action
- Calibers: .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor
- Highlights: oversized bolt handle, adjustable trigger, threaded barrel
Best Mid-Priced Sniper Rifle
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 4/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 3/5 |
Pros
- Outstanding factory accuracy with match-grade barrels
- Threaded barrel ready for suppressor or brake
- Oversized bolt handle enables faster cycling
Cons
- Limited caliber options compared to premium sniper rifles
- Minor accessory ecosystem versus higher-end platforms
- Fewer chassis upgrades than premium rifles

The Tikka T3x TAC A1 is where a lot of shooters land when they want a real chassis precision rifle without AXSR money. It puts the smooth T3x bolt action in a tactical chassis with an oversized bolt handle, an adjustable trigger and a threaded barrel, in .308 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor. It also comes in a left-handed version.
On October 26, 2026, the lowest price in our feed was $1,999.99 for a 20-inch .308, and Palmetto State Armory had the left-handed .308 at $2,390.99. Spending less on the rifle leaves more for glass, which matters more than anything else on this list.
If your budget stretches past $4,000, the multi-caliber Barrett MRAD at number 6 is the step up. For the big .50 cal Barretts, see our best .50 BMG rifles.
Best For: shooters who want a factory chassis rifle that is ready for a scope and a suppressor.

4. Ruger Precision Rifle
- Price: from $1,839.99
- Action: Bolt action
- Calibers: .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .300 PRC, .338 Lapua Mag
- Highlights: oversized bolt handle, adjustable trigger, threaded barrel
Best Entry Level Precision Rifle
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 4.5/5 | 3.5/5 | 4/5 | 3/5 | 2/5 |
Pros
- Outstanding value for a precision chassis rifle
- Adjustable stock fits any shooter build
- Wide range of available calibers
Cons
- Heavy for field carry at over 10 pounds
- Factory trigger adequate but not exceptional
- Stock pistol grip feels basic to some shooters
The Ruger Precision is one of the best entry level rifles for new precision shooters. It offers a strong chassis system, adjustable stock, and ergonomic pistol grips. The bolt face locks up cleanly, and the rifle handles both short and long action calibers depending on the version. For many shooters, this is the best sniper rifle to start with before stepping into higher price points. On October 26, 2026, Bass Pro Shops had it at $1,839.99 in .308 Win or 6.5 Creedmoor. (The Ruger Precision Rimfire is a different, much cheaper .22 training rifle.)
Best For: new shooters, long-range training, budget-conscious buyers.

5. Sig Sauer Cross
- Caliber: .308 Win
- Barrel: 16 inches
- Weight: 5.9lb
- Capacity: 5+1
Best for Portability
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 4.5/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 4.5/5 | 3/5 |
Pros
- Ultra lightweight at just 5.9 pounds
- Folding stock makes it supremely packable
- Clean two stage trigger out of the box
Cons
- Light weight hurts stability on the bench
- Every early rifle recalled in 2020
- Limited aftermarket support compared to AR platforms

We’re going out on a limb for the Sig Sauer Cross. In November 2020, Sig recalled every Cross it had built to that point after a rifle showed a delayed discharge, told owners to stop using them, and modified the firing action on every rifle.
That and the long distance shooters writing it off as unstable and inaccurate thanks in part to its light weight.
But if you’re not punching paper, and you want a precision rifle you can carry all day, the Cross is exceptional. On October 26, 2026, Palmetto State Armory had the 16-inch .308 at $1,600.99, and Sportsman’s Guide had an 18-inch 6.5 Creedmoor at $1,699.99.
It helps that it’s 5.9lb and you can fold the stock away when you’re hiking. That makes the Sig Sauer Cross a formidable weapon for an unofficial sniper.

6. Barrett MRAD
- Action: Bolt action
- Calibers: .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm PRC, .300 Win Mag, .300 PRC, .300 Norma Mag, .338 Norma Mag, .338 Lapua Mag
- Barrel / weight (.338 Lapua): 26 inches, 14.5 lbs
- Capacity: 10 rounds
Best Military Pedigree
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 3/5 | 4.5/5 | 3.5/5 | 4.5/5 | 5/5 |
Pros
- The action under the military’s Mk22
- Changes caliber with a barrel swap
- 10-round magazine
Cons
- Over $4,000 before any glass
- 14.5 lbs in .338 Lapua
- Conversion kits add real cost
If you want the closest thing to a current-issue sniper rifle you can buy, this is it. The Mk22 that US special operations, the Army and the Marine Corps are moving to is a variant of the Barrett MRAD, and the civilian MRAD keeps the trick that won it the job: you change caliber by changing the barrel and bolt, not the rifle.

In .338 Lapua it carries a 26-inch barrel and weighs 14.5 pounds. For the rifles the most famous SEAL sniper actually carried, see Chris Kyle’s guns, and for the rest of history’s great snipers, the most famous military snipers in the world.
On October 26, 2026, the lowest MRAD price in our feed was $4,130.02 for the MRAD SMR in .308, and a full-size .300 Win Mag MRAD was $5,011. That puts it well under the AXSR and in the same bracket as the Desert Tech SRS M2. Our Barrett MRAD review covers how it shot over 320 rounds.
Best For: shooters who want one rifle that covers several calibers, and anyone who wants the military’s current choice.

7. M110 SASS / Knight’s Armament SR 25
- Action: Semi automatic
- Caliber: .308 Win
- Highlights: law enforcement approval, sniper role support, Stoner gas system
Best For: law enforcement, DMR roles, semi auto precision shooters
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 2.5/5 | 4.5/5 | 5/5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
Pros
- Combat proven semi auto precision platform
- Rapid follow up shots without breaking position
- Trusted by US military and law enforcement worldwide
Cons
- Very expensive and limited civilian availability
- Heavier than most bolt action precision rifles
- Semi auto gas system requires more maintenance
The M110 SASS and Knight’s Armament SR 25 form the backbone of American semi auto sniper rifles. These rifles are accurate, reliable, and trusted by the United States military and law enforcement. The gas-operated Stoner system is smooth, the magazine release is fast, and the accuracy exceeds what most semi autos deliver. For rapid follow up shots and serious sniper role support, the SR 25 remains the standard. On October 26, 2026, the SR-25 Advanced Precision Rifle started at $5,999.99 in our feed, and Guns.com had the SR-25 Precision Carbine at $8,999.99.
Best For: law enforcement, DMR roles, semi auto precision shooters.

8. Desert Tech SRS M2
- Caliber: 308 Win
- Barrel: 26 inches
- Capacity: 6+1 in .308
An Illogical Favorite
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 2.5/5 | 3.5/5 | 5/5 | 4/5 | 3.5/5 |
Pros
- Bullpup design delivers full barrel length in compact package
- Quick caliber conversions with barrel swap system
- Ambidextrous controls suit left and right handed shooters
Cons
- Bullpup trigger feel takes time to adjust to
- Expensive platform with costly conversion kits
- Less aftermarket support than traditional layouts
The Desert Tech SRS M2 is a true bullpup precision rifle. You can change barrels, bolts, and calibers quickly using conversion kits, giving you one rifle that performs many missions. The bullpup layout puts a 26-inch barrel in a rifle far shorter than a conventional one, and the magazine holds six rounds of .308. On October 26, 2026, the SRS M2 was $5,824 in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor in our feed.
Best For: shooters who want a modular precision sniper rifle.

9. Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro
- Caliber: .308 Win, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor
- Action: Bolt
- Capacity: 10+1
- Weight: 10.8 to 13.3 lbs depending on barrel
Pros
- Cold hammer forged barrel delivers consistent accuracy
- Daniel Defense quality and reliability reputation
- Excellent factory trigger with clean break
Cons
- Premium price for a bolt action rifle
- Limited caliber options compared to modular platforms
- Heavier than some competitors in its class
Daniel Defense builds rifles known for durability and consistency. The Delta 5 Pro and DD5 bring that reputation into the precision world. These rifles use hammer forged barrels, clean adjustable triggers, and quality materials that hold accuracy in cold weather and high round counts. They work well as practical precision rifles for shooters who want a balance of weight, recoil control, and usability. The Pro comes in .308 Win, 6mm Creedmoor and 6.5 Creedmoor with 20, 24 or 26-inch barrels. On October 26, 2026, the cheapest one in our feed was a 26-inch 6.5 Creedmoor Varmint at $3,299.99.
Best For: practical precision shooters who need reliable long gun performance.

10. Mossberg Patriot
- Caliber: .308 Win
- Barrel: 22 inch (16.25 and 18 inch carbines too)
- Price: from $355.42
Pros
- Incredible value as a budget bolt action rifle
- Adjustable LBA trigger is surprisingly good
- Threaded barrel ready for suppressors out of the box
Cons
- Plastic stock feels cheap compared to chassis rifles
- Accuracy is acceptable but not match grade
- Limited long range capability beyond 600 yards

The Mossberg Patriot is the extreme budget option that beginners choose when they want a real bolt action rifle to learn the fundamentals. This rifle includes an adjustable trigger, a threaded barrel, and a clean action that runs better than the price point suggests. With good match ammo, the Patriot produces tight groups and helps shooters understand wind calls, drop, and range precision. On October 26, 2026, the 22-inch .308 was $407.99 at Sportsman’s Guide, and Palmetto State Armory had the 18-inch carbine at $414.99.
Best For: beginners, budget buyers, first long range rifle.

Bonus: McMillan Tac-50, the Record Holder
- Action: Bolt action
- Caliber: .50 BMG
- Highlights: made the 3,540 meter record shot in 2017
Not sold by any store we track
| Price | Accuracy | Portability | Ergonomics | Prestige |
| 2/5 | 5/5 | 2.5/5 | 4/5 | 5/5 |
Pros
- Made the 3,540-meter record shot in 2017
- Exceptional build quality for extreme conditions
- Supreme accuracy at extreme long range
Cons
- No store we track sells one
- Massive weight makes field deployment difficult
- Ammunition is expensive and hard to find
The McMillan TAC 50 is a legend in extremely long range shooting. In 2017 a Canadian JTF2 sniper used one to make a confirmed hit at 3,540 meters in Iraq, the record for six years. This anti material rifle handles the .50 BMG cartridge with authority, and its long barrel provides strong energy retention. The TAC 50 is engineered for extreme long range precision and is one of the most respected rifles in this category.
We moved the TAC-50 out of the numbered picks because no store in our feed had one for sale on October 26, 2026, new or used; the only McMillan rifle listed was a .308 in the frozen Classic Firearms feed. It stays here for the story. If you want a .50 you can actually buy, start with the Barrett M82A1 above or our best .50 BMG rifles guide.
Buyer’s Guide: Key Sniper Rifle Features
Chassis System
A strong chassis system improves stability and accuracy. Many rifles on this list use aluminum or composite chassis designs that maintain zero and manage recoil.
Threaded Barrel
Allows the use of a suppressor, flash hider, or muzzle device. Essential for controlling recoil.
Muzzle Brake
Reduces recoil and helps you maintain sight picture during long range strings.
Adjustable Trigger
Creates a cleaner break and consistent connection to the rifle.
Oversized Bolt Handle
Makes cycling easier in prone, especially with gloves.
Focal Plane
Choose the right focal plane based on your training. First focal plane is preferred for long distances.
Match Ammo
Every rifle on this list performs best with quality match ammunition.
Conclusion
The best sniper rifle is the rifle that fits your mission, your skill level, and your range. If you want a world class precision rifle, the Accuracy International AXSR is the top choice. For a semi automatic sniper rifle with real service history, the M110 SASS and SR 25 remain unmatched. For anti-materiel work the Barrett M82 leads the way, and the Barrett MRAD is the multi-caliber rifle the military chose. For beginners, the Mossberg Patriot is the cheapest option and a reliable learning tool.
Every rifle in this buyer’s guide earns its place by offering strong performance, long-range capability, and real value for the precision shooter. Pick the rifle that fits your goals, add a quality optic, practice often, and you will see results.
What Actually Makes a Rifle a Sniper Rifle
A scope on a hunting rifle does not make it a sniper rifle. The term describes a rifle built around one job: putting the first round exactly where you called it, at a distance where wind and drop stop being rounding errors. Four things have to be true. The rifle has to be accurate enough that it is never the limiting factor. It has to keep working when it is filthy and cold. It has to be carryable, because somebody walks it into position. And it has to hold an optic that tracks and returns to zero.
That last one catches more first-time buyers than any of the others. Spend $4,000 on the rifle and $500 on the glass and you have built an expensive way to miss.
Bolt Action or Semi Auto
Bolt guns still win on pure accuracy. Fewer parts move during ignition, the action is stiffer, and there is no gas system tugging at the barrel. That is why the distance records and most military long-range work sit with bolt-actions.
Semi-autos give some of that back in exchange for speed. If you need a fast second shot, or you are supporting a squad rather than working alone, the semi-auto earns its keep. That is the designated marksman job, and it is why the M110 and the SR-25 exist alongside the bolt guns rather than instead of them.
The Cartridges Worth Knowing
- .308 Winchester / 7.62×51 NATO. The baseline. Cheapest match ammo, the widest choice of rifles, and what most of the guns above are chambered in. Start here unless you have a reason not to.
- 6.5 Creedmoor. Flatter and less bothered by wind than .308 at similar recoil. That is why the Tikka and the Ruger both offer it.
- .300 Winchester Magnum. More powder, more reach, more recoil. The US Army built the M2010 around it.
- .300 and .338 Norma Magnum. What the current military rifle fields for extreme range.
- .338 Lapua Magnum. The long-range answer for civilians and police before you get into .50 territory.
- .50 BMG. Anti-materiel, not a general-purpose long-range round. It is also the one with legal strings attached.
If you are weighing two of these against each other, our 6.5 Creedmoor vs .300 Win Mag breakdown covers recoil, energy and drop in detail.
What Military Snipers Actually Carry Now
If you came here looking for the best sniper rifle in the world, this is the honest answer. The US military has been consolidating onto one platform, the Mk22 Advanced Sniper Rifle, which Barrett builds on its MRAD action. It is multi-caliber by design and fields in .338 Norma Magnum, .300 Norma Magnum and 7.62×51 NATO, with a barrel change moving it between them. Quoted effective range runs to 1,500 meters.
The Mk22 is replacing the M2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle, the Barrett M107 and the Mk13. It reached full operational capability with the Marine Corps in November 2024.
Worth being clear about what that means for the list above. The Barrett M82 at number 2 and the McMillan bonus pick are the outgoing generation of that job rather than the current issue rifle. The Barrett MRAD at number 6 is the civilian version of the current one, and unlike the Mk22 you can actually buy it.
The Longest Confirmed Shots
These get quoted constantly, and more often than not they are quoted wrong. No official body certifies any of them, so read the list as military reporting rather than a certified record.
| Distance | Year | Shooter | Rifle | Cartridge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4,000 m | 2025 | Ukrainian “Pryvyd” unit | XADO Snipex Alligator | 14.5x114mm |
| 3,800 m | 2023 | Viacheslav Kovalskyi, Ukraine | Horizon’s Lord | 12.7x114mm HL |
| 3,540 m | 2017 | Canadian JTF2 operator | McMillan TAC-50 | .50 BMG |
| 2,815 m | 2012 | Australian sniper | Barrett M82A1 | .50 BMG |
Two of those four were fired with rifles on this page. The McMillan held the top spot for six years, and the Barrett M82A1 is still the gun that put .50 BMG in the public imagination. If the big bores are what you came for, we have a whole roundup of the best .50 BMG rifles.
Can You Legally Own One?
Mostly yes, and there is less to this than people assume. “Sniper rifle” is not a legal category. Federally these are ordinary bolt-action and semi-auto centerfire rifles, bought the same way any rifle is bought.
The exception worth knowing is .50 BMG in California. That state’s .50 Caliber BMG Regulation Act took effect on 1 January 2005 and prohibits manufacture, import, sale and possession, with registration available for rifles owned before that date. If you are in California, the Barrett and the McMillan are off the table, and the .338 Lapua rifles are where you look instead. Check your own state rules before ordering anything on this page, and if a .308 is where you land, our best .308 rifles guide covers bolt guns as well as semi-autos.

This list is incomplete without the Tikka T3X Tac A1 which arguably blows away most, if not all, other rifles on your list.
Hi
Do you ship your guns to Nepal?
If so kindly let me know the timing of delivery and payment terms for some guns that I intend to import.
Thx

No sorry, that sounds like about 150 felonies and probably more trouble than it could ever be worth! Good luck sourcing guns locally.
Did. You forget the SR25 /M110 308 sniper rifle
Are these items available in India (near Mizoram Nagaland)?
Anyone please tell me how to buy and what things should prepare for?
You’re list is great but you are missing the Nemesis Arms ANSR. You really need to check it out. I have shot it and used it numerous times. I have one on order.

Nick, I am a newcomer in terms of Sniper Long Range Rifle. I want to purchase a complete set of Remington 700 PCR Enhanced version; either .260 Rem. 6.5 Creedmoor, and .308 Win. The complete set should include from rifle case, scope, tripod stand, muzzle…etc. Who and where should I contact? Thank you very much for your help in advance.
Best regards,

Well I think you’re looking for this kind of kit from Euro Optic. They’re absolute specialists and I recommend them for this kind of inquiry. Here’s the thing, Remington has its own issues and stock across the board is a real problem. So keep an eye on that link, but also look at your options. You won’t spend much more, if anything, on a Barrett MRAD. You can also get some great options from Sako and you can see a random selection of sniper rifles here.
Wow, Mike- you must get all the chicks.
Nothing to add, Just really enjoyed this post.
Hi,
I don’t agree with this list 🙂
Because I can’t find in the list Desert Tech, Vitrix, Blaser rifles.
