The Benelli M1014 is the best shotgun the company makes, in our humble opinion, but there are other specialist choices and cheaper options.

Why Benelli Leads in 2026
Benelli builds the shotguns military units and police departments carry worldwide. Its A.R.G.O. gas system was designed for and approved by the U.S. Marine Corps, and the same engineering runs through the hunting guns below.
Benelli has spent 59 years (since 1967) building a reputation on the back of their Inertia Driven system, a mechanism so simple and tough that it changed how we judge semi-auto reliability. But in 2026, Benelli isn’t just resting on the “click-clack” reliability of the legacy M2.
With its Advanced Impact (A.I.) barrel system, introduced in 2024, which uses complex bore geometry to increase pellet velocity, and the rust-resistant BE.S.T. (Benelli Surface Treatment), backed by a 25-year rust and corrosion warranty, the brand has widened the gap between itself and the competition.
We have field-tested the latest lineup, from the bomb-proof M4 to the featherweight Ethos, to bring you the definitive ranking of the best Benelli shotguns on the market today.
Table of Contents

1. Benelli Super Black Eagle 3 12ga
- Action Type: Semi Auto
- List Price: $2,399 MSRP (3.5-inch 12ga); $2,149 for the 3-inch SBE3
- Gauge: 12 (3.5-inch), 20 and 28 (3-inch)
- Chamber: 3.5-inch (12ga), 3-inch (20 and 28ga)
- Weight: 6.9 lbs
The Undisputed King of Waterfowl Hunting
Pros
- Innovative bolt design eliminates misfire clicks
- Comfort Tech system handles heavy magnums
- Oversized controls for cold weather use
Cons
- Premium price tag for hunting shotgun
- Poorer cycling with very light loads
- Noticeable recoil compared to gas guns

If you walk into any duck blind in America, you will see a Super Black Eagle. It is the standard by which all other waterfowl guns are measured. The third generation (SBE3) perfected the ergonomics, and the SBE3 A.I. Cerakote ($3,099 MSRP) adds Benelli’s A.I. barrel.
The new Advanced Impact (A.I.) barrel system isn’t just marketing fluff. By redesigning the internal contours of the barrel, Benelli has managed to squeeze higher velocity out of standard steel loads. Faster pellets mean harder hits and shorter leads on passing teal.
The Verdict The Super Black Eagle 3 is expensive, with a $2,399 MSRP for the 3.5-inch 12ga, but it is the last duck gun you will ever need. The Inertia Driven system will cycle standard 1-1/8 oz target loads and heavy 3.5-inch goose loads without adjustment. We highly recommend spending the extra cash for the BE.S.T. finish, Benelli’s proprietary coating that is virtually impervious to saltwater corrosion.

Super Black Eagle vs. Black Eagle
What is the difference? They are both top Benelli shotguns, in different ways.
- Super Black Eagle 3 (3.5-inch): 12ga only, from $2,399 MSRP.
- Super Black Eagle 3 (3-inch): if you don’t shoot 3.5-inch goose loads, the 3-inch SBE3 starts at $2,149 and comes in 12, 20 and 28 gauge. Benelli USA no longer lists the Black Eagle.
Benelli 20ga is a Popular Shotgun
The SBE3 also comes in 20 gauge (5.8 to 5.9 lbs, from $2,149 MSRP).

2. Benelli M4 EXT
- Action Type: Semi Auto
- Barrel Length: 18.5 inch
- List Price: $2,599 MSRP
- Capacity: 7+1
- Sights: Ghost Ring
- Weight: 7.8 lbs
Best Home Defense Shotgun
Pros
- Battle proven ARGO gas piston system
- Ghost ring sights offer rapid acquisition
- Incredible reliability with diverse ammunition types
Cons
- Expensive compared to most tactical shotguns
- Heavy overall weight slows rapid transitions
- No adjustable cheek riser on the EXT
This is a special forces favorite. It is the extreme version of the Benelli M4 Tactical shotgun, and we love it.
It’s a cliche because it’s true, the Benelli Tactical 12 gauge shotgun is an equalizer, a breech tool and an almighty close quarters combat weapon.
This is a compact, soft shooting shotgun with a 5-position telescoping stock and oversized bolt release if you really want to apply yourself to the accuracy side.
For years, civilian buyers had to deal with “neutered” versions of the legendary M4 due to import restrictions. That meant fixed stocks, limited magazine tubes, and 922r compliance headaches. The new M4 EXT solves that. It comes from the factory with 7+1 capacity and a telescoping stock, and fully 922R compliant.
The M4 differs from the rest of the Benelli lineup because it uses the A.R.G.O. (Auto-Regulating Gas Operated) system rather than Inertia. Why gas? Because when your life depends on it, you want a system that works..
The Verdict This is the gold standard for tactical defense shotguns. The dual stainless steel pistons of the A.R.G.O. system are self-cleaning and brutally reliable. The recoil is significantly softer than the Inertia guns, making rapid follow-up shots on target effortless. If you want the best home defense tool money can buy, look for the Benelli M4.
Of course the Benelli M4 provides the same A.R.G.O. engineering, and the M1014 ($2,499 MSRP) adds a fixed stock and 5+1 capacity. So you could get one of those here.

3. Benelli M2 Field
- Barrel Length: 26 or 28 inches
- Action Type: Semi Auto
- Gauge: 12, 20
- Chamber: 3-inch
- Weight: 7.2 lbs (12ga), 6.1 lbs (20ga)
Best All Round Hunting Shotgun
Pros
- Reliable inertia system runs very clean
- Lightweight balanced frame improves swing speed
- Shim kit allows custom stock fit
Cons
- Significant recoil with heavy magnum loads
- Inertia system requires firm shoulder pressure
- High price point for hunting shotguns
The new M2-G1 Tactical (gas-operated, from $1,949 MSRP) is the cheaper tactical alternative to the M4, and the M2 Field is the cheaper alternative to the Super Black Eagle.
While the Super Black Eagle gets the glory, the Benelli M2 does the work. For 2026, Benelli has added Progressive Comfort recoil reduction to the M2 Field. MSRP runs $1,699 to $1,829.
It lacks the 3.5-inch chamber of the Super Black Eagle, but for 99% of hunters, a 3-inch chamber is all you need. Because it doesn’t have the new A.I. barrel tech or the massive marketing push, the starting price remains accessible for a premium Italian semi auto.
The Verdict The M2 is the “Toyota Hilux” of shotguns. It isn’t flashy, but it will run forever. It is lighter than the M4 and faster than the Nova. If you need one gun to handle doves, ducks, and home defense, the M2 Field is the most versatile semi auto shotgun in the catalog.

4. Benelli Nova 3
- List Price: $649 MSRP
- Action: Pump Action Shotgun
- Weight: 6.6 lbs (26-inch)
- Chamber: 3-inch, 12ga
- Capacity: 4+1
Best Budget Pump Action
Pros
- Steel reinforced polymer receiver
- Ergonomic magazine plug button simplifies unloading
- Aggressive forestock grip ensures positive cycling
Cons
- Recoil feels harsh with magnum shells
- One piece stock limits fit adjustment
- Action is noisy compared to wood

You don’t have to spend two grand to own a Benelli. The Benelli Nova, now the 2025 Nova 3 in 12 gauge, changed the pump action shotgun market with its single-piece polymer receiver and stock. This “skeleton” design makes the gun incredibly tough and impervious to weather.
Unlike traditional pump action shotguns that use a steel receiver mated to a wood stock, the Nova is built like a tank. It’s ugly, it’s loud, and it absolutely refuses to break.
Benelli sells the Nova 3 in field barrels for hunting and as an 18.5-inch defense model. The camo field versions are a fine all-season hunting pump.
Pick the barrel length for the job: a 26- or 28-inch for birds, the 18.5-inch for home defense.
The Verdict For $649 MSRP, the 12ga Nova 3 gives you a tough 3-inch pump action that can hunt most of North America, and street prices run lower. If you need 3.5-inch shells, the SuperNova is $749. The original Nova was heavy; the Nova 3 is lighter at 6.6 lbs.

5. Benelli SuperNova 3 Tactical
- Barrel Length: 18.5 inches
- Chamber: 3-inch, 12ga
- Capacity: 7+1
- List Price: $979 to $1,149 MSRP
A Great Budget Shotgun with Versatility
Pros
- ComfortTech stock significantly reduces felt recoil
- Tough polymer shell resists salt corrosion
- M-LOK forend and QD sling points
Cons
- Pump action is loud and metallic
- Receiver height makes high optics difficult
- Heavy weight slows down rapid swinging
The Benelli SuperNova 3 Tactical is as good as any tactical pump shotgun on the market in 2026.
A steel frame with an overmolded polymer finish meets a ComforTech stock at the rear. The SuperNova 3 Tactical is chambered for 3-inch shells (the field SuperNova takes 3.5-inch), and its 7+1 tube and big loading port make reloads quick.
The SuperNova takes the tough heart of the Nova and adds modularity. The key difference is the ComforTech stock, which can be removed and swapped for a pistol grip, making it a favorite for tactical pump builds.
The SuperNova Tactical is popular with police and home defenders for its massive trigger guard (easy to use with gloves) and the magazine cut-off button, which allows you to switch loads on the fly without emptying the tube.
You can order a variety of SuperNova field shotguns, too, and the idea is that it’s fully modular and you can turn this receiver into a multitude of shotguns with the right parts & accessories.
The Verdict: If you want a tactical pump action shotgun that feels more modern than an 870 or 590, the SuperNova Tactical is the answer. The field SuperNova, which takes 3.5-inch shells, covers turkey and waterfowl. Get the right parts and this is two or three shotguns in one, which means it’s just as cost effective as the more common American brands,

6. Benelli 828u
- Action: Break Action Shotgun
- Weight: 6.5lb
- Capacity: 2
- Ejectors: Barrel-contained, pressure-activated
- Recoil: Progressive comfort
The Innovative Over/Under
Pros
- Innovative locking plate prevents receiver wear
- Shim adjustable stock ensures custom fit
- Extremely lightweight for all day carry
Cons
- Significant recoil with heavy field loads
- Opening lever feels unusual at first
- Premium price for aluminum receiver shotgun

The Benelli 828U is an unconventional over/under, not the type grandpa owned. MSRP runs $3,799 to $4,399. Unless grandpa had a butt ton of money he never mentioned.
When Benelli decided to make an Over/Under, they didn’t just copy the Browning Citori. They reinvented the break action shotgun concept entirely. The 828U uses a unique steel locking plate system that takes the stress off the receiver, allowing Benelli to use lightweight aluminum.
The result is a fast-swinging, futuristic bird gun that doesn’t wear out its hinge pins like traditional break-actions.
The Verdict Purists hate it; hunters love it. The starting price is high, but the 828U offers a level of adjustability (shims for drop and cast) that you normally find only on semi auto guns.

7. Benelli M2 Speed
- Weight: 6.8 lbs
- Capacity: 3+1
- Action: Semi-auto
- Chokes: Crio C, IC, M, IM, F (extended optional)
- Purpose: Competition
The Competition King, Out the Box
Pros
- Factory enlarged port allows quad loads
- BE.S.T.-coated bolt cycles fast
- Oversized controls for reliable fast operation
Cons
- Specialized features make hunting difficult
- High cost compared to standard models
- Aggressive texturing can wear on hands

The Benelli M2 Tactical semi automatic shotgun is the volume seller, but there’s a whole range that has won legions of fans worldwide.
The Benelli M2 has dominated 3-Gun competitions for decades, but shooters always had to spend hundreds of dollars modifying them. The Benelli M2 Speed comes race-ready out of the box.
It features oversized loading ports (for quad-loading), an enlarged bolt handle, and the ComforTech 3 recoil system. The bolt is BE.S.T.-coated for faster cycling, and the Racing Gray receiver marks it as a 3-Gun gun. MSRP is $2,299.
The Verdict If you want to win, get the M2 Speed. The starting price reflects the custom shop upgrades you get for free. It is the fastest cycling semi auto shotgun we have ever tested.
Of course you can spend a ton more money on an M2 and go for the TTI tuned John Wick Benelli M2.

8. Benelli Montefeltro
- Action Type: Semi Auto
- Weight: 6.5 lbs (12ga), 5.8 lbs (20ga)
- Finish: Blued / Walnut
- Rib: Low / Flat
The Gentleman’s Semi Auto
Pros
- Slim lightweight profile improves pointing speed
- Reliable inertia system stays very clean
- Classic walnut stock offers timeless looks
Cons
- Significant recoil with heavy field loads
- Shim kit adjustment range is limited
- Expensive compared to basic hunting pumps

Sold as an upland and field shotgun, the Benelli Montefeltro is a lightweight shotgun that won’t bog you down when you’re otherwise getting bogged down.
The Montefeltro Ultra Light 20ga weighs just 5.3 lbs, and the base 12ga starts at $1,699 MSRP. It’s chambered for 3-inch magnum loads, so you can switch from light birdshot to 3-inch shells with no adjustment.
It has satin walnut (AA grade on the Silver), anodized receiver and other goodies that help resist corrosion and keep it on point for shooting targets or ducks.

9. Benelli ETHOS
- Action Type: Semi Auto (Inertia Driven)
- Gauge: 12, 20, 28 (3-inch)
- Barrel Length: 26 or 28 inches
- Weight: 5.5 to 6.7 lbs
- Capacity: 4+1 (28ga 2+1)
- List Price: $2,599 MSRP (A.I. Upland from $3,299)
Pros
- Light enough to carry all day
- AA walnut and engraved nickel receiver
- Progressive Comfort softens recoil
Cons
- $2,599 MSRP before options
- Too nice for a duck blind
- No 3.5-inch chamber

This slot used to hold the Benelli Lupo HPR, which is a bolt-action rifle, not a shotgun. Our Benelli Lupo review still covers it. On a shotgun list, the ninth pick belongs to the ETHOS, Benelli’s premium Inertia Driven field gun.
The ETHOS comes in 12, 20 and 28 gauge with 3-inch chambers, AA-grade walnut and an engraved nickel receiver, and weighs 5.5 to 6.7 lbs depending on gauge. Benelli’s Progressive Comfort system takes the sting out of the 12ga. It starts at $2,599 MSRP, and the A.I. Upland version starts at $3,299.
The Verdict If you hunt upland birds and want a semi-auto that carries like an over/under and looks the part, the ETHOS is the Benelli to buy. For ducks and geese, stick with the Super Black Eagle 3.
Buying Guide: Choosing the Right Benelli
IInertia vs. Gas (A.R.G.O.)
Most Benelli shotguns use the Inertia Driven system. This uses the recoil energy of the shot to cycle the bolt.
- Pros: Runs clean (no gas fouling), lightweight, reliable.
- Cons: More felt recoil.
- Models: Super Black Eagle, M2, Montefeltro, Ethos (the new M2-G1 Tactical is gas-operated).
The M4 uses the A.R.G.O. gas system.
- Pros: Extremely soft shooting, reliable with heavy weight added.
- Cons: Heavier and pricier (Benelli calls A.R.G.O. self-cleaning).
- Models: M4, M1014.
The “Benelli Click”
You may have heard of the infamous “click.” This happens on Inertia guns if the rotating bolt head gets bumped out of battery. Benelli has largely solved this on the Super Black Eagle 3 and Ethos lines with a new “Easy Locking” detent system that forces the bolt closed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best Benelli shotgun overall?
The Super Black Eagle 3 is our pick. It handles waterfowl, upland and range work, the 12-gauge takes 3.5-inch shells, and Benelli lists it from $2,399 (3.5-inch) or $2,149 (3-inch) MSRP. The Inertia Driven action runs clean and the BE.S.T. finish holds up to wet blinds.
Are Benelli shotguns worth the higher price?
Yes, if reliability matters to you. Benelli says its Inertia Driven guns are known to fire 500,000+ rounds, and the simple action has fewer parts to foul. If the price is a stretch, the Nova 3 pump starts at $649 MSRP and still carries the Benelli name.
What is the difference between Benelli Inertia and A.R.G.O. systems?
Inertia Driven, developed in 1967, uses recoil energy and a spring in the bolt, so it stays light and clean. The A.R.G.O. (Auto-Regulating Gas-Operated) system on the M4 uses twin gas pistons for softer recoil. Inertia suits hunting guns; A.R.G.O. suits tactical guns.
Is the Benelli M4 good for home defense?
Yes. The M4 runs Benelli's A.R.G.O. gas system, which was designed for and approved by the U.S. Marine Corps. The M4 EXT holds 7+1 in 12-gauge with an 18.5-inch barrel, ghost-ring sights and a telescoping stock, at $2,599 MSRP.
Which Benelli shotgun is best for waterfowl hunting?
The Super Black Eagle 3 in 12-gauge 3.5-inch. It shoots the biggest goose loads, comes in camo with the BE.S.T. finish, and the A.I. Cerakote version ($3,099) adds the Advanced Impact barrel. If you only shoot 3-inch loads, the 3-inch SBE3 starts at $2,149.
Are Benelli pump shotguns reliable?
Yes. The Nova 3 and SuperNova use a steel-reinforced polymer receiver, which shrugs off weather and abuse. The Nova 3 is 12-gauge 3-inch only, from $649. The SuperNova 3 Tactical holds 7+1 with an 18.5-inch barrel, from $979.
What is the Benelli "click" and is it a problem?
The "Benelli click" happens when an inertia bolt isn't fully locked, so the gun clicks instead of firing. Newer guns like the SBE3, Ethos and M2 Field use Benelli's Easy Locking bolt, a spring-activated detent that guides the bolt into the locked position. Ride the bolt home fully and it's a non-issue.
