The One-Piece Design That Makes the Nova Different
The Nova’s headline feature is its receiver: instead of a traditional aluminum housing, the stock and receiver are molded as a single high-strength polymer unit with a steel insert reinforcing the locking area. That means fewer parts to loosen, nothing to corrode, and a gun that shrugs off rain, mud, and saltwater like almost nothing else at the price. Feed it a 2.75″ target load one shot and a 3.5″ magnum goose load the next, and the rotating bolt head locks up the same either way. It is the definition of a do-everything shotgun.
How the Nova Shoots
On the range and in the field, the Nova runs like a pump should: positively, with a slightly gritty stroke that smooths out after a few boxes of shells. It is not the silkiest pump on the market (the Remington 870 still owns that feel), but it is utterly reliable, cycling everything from light dove loads to punishing 3.5″ turkey magnums without a hiccup. Recoil from those heavy loads is stout given the light weight, which is exactly why the ComforTech-stocked versions are worth the small upcharge if you shoot magnums often. The ghost-ring-sighted Tactical model is genuinely capable for home defense, running buckshot and slugs without complaint.
Nova Variants and the SuperNova
The Nova comes in a Field configuration (longer vent-rib barrel, bead sight, for hunting and clays) and a Tactical configuration (18.5″ barrel, ghost-ring sights, for defense). Step up to the SuperNova and you get a redesigned, modular version with a removable buttstock, comb-height inserts, and improved ergonomics for a bit more money. All three share the same weatherproof toughness.
Longer vent-rib barrel, bead sight, ComforTech options. The all-purpose hunting and clays pump.
18.5-inch barrel, ghost-ring sights, 4+1. The budget home-defense and truck-gun Nova.
Modular stock with removable buttstock and comb inserts, better ergonomics. The upgraded Nova.
Where to Buy the Benelli Nova
The Nova’s most direct rivals are the two American pump kings, the Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870. The Nova undercuts neither on price, but it out-weathers both and swallows 3.5″ shells the standard 870 and 500 can’t. Compare them below, and see the full field in our best pump-action shotguns and best 12 gauge shotguns guides.
Who Should NOT Buy the Benelli Nova
- Feel-obsessed pump shooters: if a glass-smooth action is your priority, the Remington 870 still strokes nicer out of the box.
- Buyers who want the lightest recoil: the Nova is light, so heavy magnums thump. Consider a gas semi-auto like the Benelli M2 or a heavier pump if you shoot a lot of magnums.
- Aftermarket tinkerers: the Mossberg 500 and 870 have a far deeper accessory and parts ecosystem than the Nova.
- Anyone wanting a tang safety: the Nova uses a crossbolt safety, not the ambidextrous tang safety pump traditionalists love on the Mossberg.
The Verdict
The Benelli Nova is one of the best value pumps you can buy: nearly indestructible, weatherproof to a fault, and versatile enough to hunt, defend, and plink with a single gun. It trades a little action smoothness and aftermarket depth for toughness and 3.5″ versatility, and for most buyers that’s a trade worth making. If you want a pump that will still be running long after fancier guns have rusted, the Nova earns its place. Our Rating: 8.5 / 10, a tough, weatherproof, do-everything pump that punches above its price.
