Intro

We all have a bit of a crush on AR pistols, assault pistols, call them what you will…
They are the ultimate home defense guns and you can opt for a 9mm SMG, 5.56 NATO or 300 Blackout caliber that plays nice with a suppressor, subsonic ammo and a stabilizing brace.
AAC blackout and a proper silencer is the closest you’re ever going to get to movie style suppressor noise and it means you can fire without ear protection and have a good chance of keeping both eardrums.
So, what are the best cheap AR pistols for sale in 2024?

1. Palmetto State Armory Jakl
- Special Price: $949.99
- Caliber: 5.56 NATO
- Barrel length: 7.5 inch
- Total: 5.5lb
Overall Winner
Palmetto State Armory Jakl
| Price | Reliability | Weight | Accuracy | Prestige |
| 4/5 | 4/5 | 4/5 | 3.5/5 | 2/5 |
The Palmetto State Armory Jakl is a response to the new pistol regulation that does away with the pistol buffer.
We have seen similar designs, but this is by far the cheapest monolithic upper receiver layout we can find.
The PSA Jakl is a new arrival, but expect it to make a big impression on this semi auto pistol in these troubled times.

2. Radical Firearms RPR
- Special Price: $437.99
- Barrel: 10.5 inch
- Total: 26 inch
- Total: 5.6lb
Best Entry Level Pistol
Radical Firearms RPR
| Price | Reliability | Weight | Accuracy | Prestige |
| 5/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 | 3.5/5 | 2/5 |
Radical focuses on value for money and the first reviews of this revised AR-style pistol suggests that the build quality belongs to a much more expensive firearm.
Could this be the best cheap AR-15 pistol out there right now:? It’s close.

3. Palmetto State Armory PA15
- Special Price: $459.99
- Barrel: 10.5 inch
- Total: 26.5 inch

Cheap and Cheerful Pistol
Palmetto State Armory PA15

| 5/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 | 3.5/5 | 2/5 |
Not everybody loves PSA firearms, and they are not the absolute best on the planet. But the PSA AR-15 pistol is exceptional value.
The truth is, if you have got $500 to spend on a semi-auto pistol, you’re going to struggle to beat this cheap AR-15 pistol that punches well above its weight.
You can get one of the AR15 parts kits, a PSA Blem buffer tube and do a DIY pistol build for even less.
Palmetto State Armory do care about their customers, too, and has a stellar reputation for service with their full size rifles and AR15 parts kits.

4. ATI Omni Hybrid Maxx P4 Pistol
- Special Price: $495.99
- Caliber: 5.45
- Barrel: 7.5 inch
- Total: 25 inch

Plastic, Lightweight & Cheap
ATI Omni Hybrid Maxx P4 Pistol
| Price | Reliability | Weight | Accuracy | Prestige |
| 5/5 | 3/5 | 4/5 | 2.5/5 | 2.5/5 |
That price is not a typo. The ATI Omni Hybrid P4 is a cheap, lightweight
Fiber reinforced polymer to be precise, which ATI has proven in the field by driving a forklift truck over the it, and firing 2000 rounds through several of them as a public endurance test to prove the concept.
Material science is heading that way, plastics have to leave metal behind at some point and ATI says that point is now.
With lightweight pistol braces, these are great guns.

5. CMMG Banshee Mark 4
- Special Price: $862.99
- Caliber: 5.56 NATO/All Popular Calibers
- Barrel length: 8
- Weight: 5.1lb (Without Magazine)
- Capacity: 30+1
CMMG Banshee Mark 4
Underrated Value Package
| Price | Reliability | Weight | Accuracy | Prestige |
| 5/5 | 3/5 | 5/5 | 3.5/5 | 3.5/5c |
The Banshee Mk4 is one of those guns you can buy in basically every caliber, from 9mm Luger through to armor piercing 5.7. Here we opted for the 5,56 NATO.
A Radial Delayed Blowback system, originally designed for 45 ACP, is finally there after some initial problems and fine tuning. Now this offers softer recoil thanks to a reduced bolt mass.
The American built Banshee Mark 4 doesn’t just come in every caliber. It comes in every color. Tungsten Grey, Burnt Bronze cerakote finish, maybe Midnight Bronze, or Armor Black Nitride. They got em all.
6. Century Arms Draco Gun
- Special Price: $798.99
- Caliber: 5.56×45 NATO pistol
- Barrel: 12.25 inch
- Pistol length: 21.5 inch
- Capacity: 30+1
- Weight: 5.5lb
Century Arms Draco Gun
Best AK-47 Pistol
| Price | Reliability | Weight | Accuracy | Prestige |
| 3.5/5 | 3/5 | 3/5 | 2.5/5 | 2.5/5 |
The Century Arms Draco Gun is another pattern AK-47 that you can actually get in a variety of flavors. We have gone for the 12.25″ version here, but you can get a 6.25 inch Micro Draco and another 7.25 inch option.
Check out the Century Arms Draco short barrel version here. I mean look at that out of proportion lever action safety.

7. Battle Arms Development Workhorse
- Special Price: $1,132.99
- Cal: 5.56×45 NATO Pistol
- Barrel: 10.5 inch
- Weight: 5.8lb
Battle Arms Development Workhorse
The only reason this isn’t the overall winner is that it normally blows the budget by a tiny amount and availability is hit and miss. But if you can find the extra, and the pistol, then we highly recommend you buy the BAD Workhorse.
Also look out for deals and you can get dangerously close to $1000, especially with the Shockwave pistol braces. You can do a simple search any time. Here’s the live link, with the search terms done for you and options from trim and pricing.
This features on our $2000 AR15 pistol list and BAD has fast established an amazing reputation in the consumer AR-15 sector with stars just like this one. The Workhorse rifle and Authority Elite also feature highly on our other AR-15 lists.

8. Kel-Tec PLR-16
- Special Price: $699.99
- Caliber: 5.56 NATO Pistol
- Barrel: 9.2 inch
- Pistol length: 18.5 inch
- Weight: 3.4lb
Kel-Tec PLR-16
Is it even a 5.56 NATO AR-15 pistol at this point? Well probably not technically, but it is an exceptionally lightweight AR-15 alternative.
You get a 10 round mag capacity and it was designed for target shooting and hunting. That means it’s a solid, reliable weapon with a longer barrel that always counts for something, especially in a truck gun. It looks like a DIY pistol build, done well with a matte black finish.
And this is different enough that you could easily have this as well as a growing collection of cheap AR15 pistols.
9 Springfield Armory Saint Victor
- Special Price: $1,038.99
I seriously love the Springfield Armory Saint AR15 pistol and it has features on the page before, many times, but it was always a bridesmaid thanks to its budget price.
Here, that’s the main thing, so it was always going to do well. At least it will, if the price goes down again…
That $1000 caveat played perfectly into its hands. At that price, it was one of the best AR-15 pistols in the world. You could easily make a case, but at $1,200 it runs into some serious competition and pretty much disqualifies itself here in the AR pistols under $1000 category.
The Springfield Armory Saint pistol always faces down the heritage of the Colt M4 or the cut-price perfection in the $1000 AR-15 rifle for sale class.
It’s as specced out as AR15 pistols reasonably can be and most of the science went on materials and coatings and the buffer tube. We like that.

10. Rock River Arms LAR-15
- Special Price: $999.99
- Cal: 5.56x45mm NATO Pistol
- Barrel: 7 inch
- Total Length: 24.75
- Weight:4.8lb
Rock River Arms LAR-15
The American built Rock River Arms LAR-15 semi auto pistol is about as complete a 5.56 NATO AR-15 pistol as you’re going to see for this money.
The company provides duty-grade tools to law enforcement agencies, including the DEA and FBI. Of course those are beyond home defense.
Still, the consumer line has won plaudits around the nation and it’s just hard to make a case against owning one of these semi auto pistols.

11. Sig Sauer LT Spear
- Special Price: $2,499.99
Sig Sauer LT Spear
The US military has adopted the Sig Sauer LT Spear that offers 5.56 NATO, 300BLK and 7.62x39mm, depending on the task at hand.
And ithe semi auto pistol is worth the extra money if you have it. But it’s a LOT of extra money, before you start on new muzzle brakes and accessories for that M-Lok Handguard…
It’s new, too, so gun deals aren’t that common.
Honorable Mentions
Christensen Arms does some really cool stuff with carbon fiber and lightweight materials for your home firearms. Look out for the Christensen Arms CA9 pistol caliber carbine, and the company’s bolt action rifles/bolt action pistols too.
If you see the right gun deals, grab one.
Parts, Accessories, Magazines & Spares for Your AR
You’re going to need a wide selection of gun accessories. They include charging handles, short barrels, gas blocks, muzzle devices, upper receiver parts, M-Lok handguard, a buffer tube and even odd Bolt Carrier Groups for your AR.
That’s normal and healthy. Eventually you’ll start your own build and that’s when things get really interesting with the best tactical options like optics, night vision scopes etc. And a complete upper and lower pairing.
The Upgrades That Matter on an AR Pistol
Before you even think about optics, lights or exotic coatings, you need to understand the core parts and accessories that make an AR pistol feel fast, reliable and ready for a real session. The platform is modular, which means you can build it your way, but the wrong choices in these key components will hold you back no matter how good you are behind the trigger. This is where the upgrades actually matter, and where the best parts & accessories genuinely change how the gun behaves.
The sections below break down the critical systems — the ones that affect recoil, control, cycling, balance and overall confidence. Get these right, and everything else becomes personal taste.
Upper Receiver
The upper receiver controls the personality of your AR pistol. Go cheap here and you’ll feel it instantly. Mil-spec uppers work fine for basic builds, but if you want smoother cycling and tighter lock-up, push toward forged or billet uppers from brands that know how to cut metal properly.
Your charging handles live here, your rail system attaches here, and your barrel extension locks into place here. Everything the gun does begins in this housing. That’s why serious shooters treat uppers as the real foundation — change the upper and the entire pistol suddenly feels like a different machine.
Lower Receiver
Think of the lower receiver as the part that keeps everything honest. Triggers, safeties, mags, selector feel — all of it runs through this component. A sloppy lower creates sloppy sessions. A well-made lower puts you in control, especially when you’re running fast strings and trying to keep movement predictable.
Even with the same upper, a better lower turns an ordinary build into a smoother one. If you’re upgrading one piece at a time, this is one of the parts and accessories where the improvement shows up immediately.
Upper Parts
This is where overlooked upgrades live. A good gas block, a consistent gas tube, a proper barrel nut — these small choices keep the gun running clean through long shooting days. They’re not glamorous, but they put real stability into the system.
This is also where your charging handle interface connects with the bolt system, so fit and finish matter. A premium set of upper components is one of the best parts & accessories investments because it boosts reliability without adding weight.
Charging Handles
This is one of the biggest performance upgrades on any AR pistol. Factory charging handles are functional, but once you’ve used a premium ambi model, you don’t go back. The pull feels better, the grip feels positive, and clearing malfunctions becomes a lot easier.
A well-machined charging handle gives you the confidence to run the gun hard. And when you step up to competition-level charging handles, you’ll notice how the gun reacts differently during quick charging cycles and stress reloads.
Pistol Braces
Even with new regulations constantly shifting, pistol braces still matter. A good brace gives you stability without turning your AR pistol into a chore to carry. Some shooters prefer minimalist setups, others lean toward more rigid designs — both work, as long as they match your shooting style.
This is one of the parts and accessories categories where personal fit makes a massive difference. If the brace feels natural, the gun follows.
Buffer Tubes
Your buffer system is the heartbeat of an AR pistol, and Buffer Tubes matter more than most people think. A quality tube reduces spring noise, smooths recoil and helps the action cycle consistently. If your pistol feels jumpy or inconsistent, upgrading Buffer Tubes usually fixes it.
Some shooters forget this system until it holds them back. Don’t. A good Buffer tube paired with reliable internal components keeps the recoil impulse controlled and predictable. It’s easily one of the smartest parts & accessories upgrades you can make.
(Keyword count: Buffer Tubes x4, Buffer tube x1)
Muzzle Devices
The nose of the gun is where you can completely transform recoil control. Good muzzle devices tame rise, flatten the gun, and help you stay on target for faster follow-ups.
You’ve got three main types: flash hiders, comps, and muzzle brakes, each with a different feel. For AR pistols, muzzle devices that mix brake and comp characteristics tend to give the best performance. They keep the gun steady, tame the blast and help the pistol behave like a bigger, calmer platform. If you shoot indoors a lot, choose wisely — some muzzle brakes can be punishing.
This is one of the muzzle devices upgrades you’ll notice immediately the moment you squeeze the first round.
Bolt Carrier Group
Your bolt carrier is the engine that keeps everything moving. A reliable bolt carrier ensures tight lock-up, smooth cycling, and fewer failures to feed or eject. You don’t need anything extravagant — just good machining, clean staking and proven coating.
Think of it as the one upgrade that directly affects every other component. When the carrier runs smoothly, the gun feels stable. When it doesn’t, everything else starts to fall apart.
Final Thoughts
The AR pistol is a modular platform, but not all upgrades are equal. Focus on parts and accessories that actually change how the gun behaves — the receiver set, the charging system, the recoil system, the muzzle end, the BCG. These are the parts & accessories that turn a basic build into something that feels tuned.
Once these foundations are right, the rest is personal style. And that’s when the AR pistol becomes your gun, not just another build on the line.
Get a Quality Optic
A cheap AR pistol with a high quality red dot sight will totally outperform an expensive one without, So invest in the best red dot sights and night vision scopes.
That’s money you will never regret spending as the best red dots will transfer from gun to gun and outlive them all.
Invest in a decent gun cleaning kit, as well. A good gun cleaning kit is a no brainer. They’re not too expensive, gun cleaning supplies are everywhere and good gun cleaning kits will help you maintain your guns and spend less money on new parts.
Look out for gun cases and range gear too.
Are There California Legal AR Pistols?
There are specific approved Franklin Armory single shot AR pistols that can be considered California legal, basically you register the single shot pistiol and then change the upper for a semi legal handgun.
That’s what most people do.
Alternatively private transfers of weapons registered before the Assault Weapons legislation banned them are ok.
You need to pin the mag, by the way, to keep it California legal.
So although there are California legal AR pistols, we don’t really want to get into the fineries of gun laws here. California legal is a fluid term, we think.
New York, New Jersey and more States besides are pretty close honestly…
Where to Buy Ammo for Your AR
If you’re looking for concealed carry ammo, 45 ACP ammo, shotgun ammo, rifle ammo, rimfire ammo or 5.56, you’ll generally end up at the same places. So what are our best ammo suppliers for home defense and range shooting? Try here…
- PSA – Bulk deals on ammo, 9mm ammo, 45 ACP ammo, 300 Blackout Ammo, shotgun ammo, rifle ammo, handgun ammo.
- Firearms Depot – Shotgun ammunition, ammo deals, Blackout ammo, rimfire ammo.
And check this post for the best AR-15 ammo, 223 and 5.56.
What’s the news on Stabilizing braces and the ATF?
Please ensure you are familiar with amendments to the National Firearms Act for weapons shorter than 16 inch barrel length and all other gun laws. We just can’t give legal advice to the whole nation here, Federal law, State law, another Federal Law, we can’t keep up. So do your due diligence when it comes to personal defense.
Basically the likes of the SBA3 Brace, PDW braces and many more besides were turned into an NFA item overnight by the ATF.
The whole thing is going through the courts right now and at the moment it seems to be an unenforceable and unconstitutional attempt at a rights grab.
We recommend stripping any SBA3 brace or equivalent stabilizing braces for the moment while this all plays out in court. Or buy the monolithic type of AR pistol that has been designed around the regs.

Lost me with Radical. Absolutely the worst brand I have even owned
Apparently it has got a lot better in terms of QC and reliability. But I know some people had issues, so I certainly understand you!
Hi I would like to know what is the ar 15 on top of this page. The black one with the gold/brass barrel. I like the set up.
I think you mean the ZEV Core Elite. You can buy that right now from our partner here. I recently switched the top picture to one without a gold barrel, but I reckon your cache kept it and that’s the one you want! Let me know if it’s not.
