The best chest holster for most hunters and hikers is the GunfightersINC Kenai. It carries everything from a Glock 20 to a .50 caliber revolver, the harness buckles sit forward so they clear your pack straps, and there are no snaps or straps on the gun, just a molded shell you grab and pull. If you hunt with a big scoped revolver, Galco’s Kodiak Hunter is the leather rig built for it, and if you want something nobody will notice, Elite Survival’s TrailGuard looks like a binocular harness.
A chest holster solves the problem a belt holster can’t: a pack hip belt sits right where your gun would. Below are seven chest holsters for hunting, hiking, fishing and big-bore revolvers, with specs from each maker, live prices from our 200+ retailers checked on October 25, 2026, and the fine print that rules out some popular “holsters” for loaded carry at all.

Why Carry on Your Chest?
- Your pack belt is where your holster would be. A chest rig rides above it, so the gun stays reachable with a full pack on.
- Big guns carry better high. A 10mm Glock 20 or a .44 Magnum revolver hangs off a belt and drags your pants down. A harness spreads the weight across your shoulders.
- You can reach it sitting down. In a truck, a tree stand, a boat or a saddle, a chest holster is still in front of you.
- It works over layers. You can wear it over a jacket in cold weather, where a belt holster ends up under two layers.
The trade-offs: a chest rig is not concealed unless it’s designed to be, and the muzzle on a cross-draw rig sweeps people beside you as you draw. Practice the draw, empty, before you trust it.

1. GunfightersINC Kenai: Best Chest Holster Overall
- Shell: Kydex and nylon blend, custom molded to your gun; optic-cut revolver options
- Retention: “Inherent retention”, no snaps, straps, zippers or buttons
- Harness: Wide flat webbing, buckles forward on the torso; standard fits up to a 60 in. chest, Large up to 80 in.
- List price: Custom Kenai from $159 with harness; harness alone $75 to $90
Pros
- Clears backpack straps
- Molded for your exact gun
- Made in the USA, guaranteed
Cons
- Custom orders take time
- Not concealed
- Pricier than nylon rigs
The Kenai is the chest holster I recommend first, and it’s the one our 10mm bear defense guide calls a personal favorite. GunfightersINC molds a Kydex and nylon shell to your specific gun and uses what it calls inherent retention: “the pistol snaps in”, and there are no snaps, straps, zippers or buttons to fight on the draw.
The harness is the part that makes it work on a hike. GunfightersINC uses wide flat webbing with the buckles forward on your torso, “so there is no interference with pack straps.” The standard harness fits up to a 60 inch chest and the Large goes to 80. A custom Kenai starts at $159 including the harness. It now comes in optic-cut versions for red dot revolvers too.
Best For: Hikers, hunters and anglers carrying anything from a Glock 20 to a big revolver.
2. Galco Kodiak Hunter: Best Chest Holster for Scoped Revolvers
- Shell: Premium steerhide, open top, cross-draw
- Fits: Large single and double action hunting revolvers and Thompson/Center single shots, scoped or unscoped
- Retention: Retention strap with a glove-friendly polymer release tab
- List price: $348 at Galco
Pros
- Built for scoped big-bore revolvers
- Glove-friendly release tab
- Beautiful leather
Cons
- Most expensive rig here
- Heavy for a long hike
- Raging Hunter QD rings do not fit
Galco calls the Kodiak Hunter “the ultimate big bore scoped handgun-hunting rig”, and if you hunt with a scoped .460 or .500, it’s the one to beat. It’s premium steerhide with an open top for a short draw, a padded leather and nylon shoulder strap, a nylon torso strap and a retention strap with a release tab you can work with gloves on.
Galco lists it at $348, and Palmetto State Armory had it at $221.99. Read Galco’s one fit note before you order: the Taurus Raging Hunter doesn’t fit with quick-detach scope rings.
Best For: Handgun hunters with scoped revolvers or T/C single shots.

3. CrossBreed Chest Rig: Best Chest Holster for Big Semi-Autos
- Shell: Kydex pocket on a suede-lined leather backer
- Retention: Adjustable device under the trigger guard (not on revolvers) plus pocket screws
- Harness: Three support straps, one size fits most, larger straps available
- List price: $149.95 at CrossBreed
Pros
- Leather backer is comfortable
- Adjustable retention
- Lifetime warranty, two-week trial
Cons
- Closed bottom, no compensators
- Revolver versions molded for 6 in.
- Retention device not on revolvers
The CrossBreed Chest Rig takes the leather-backer idea from CrossBreed’s belt holsters and puts it on your chest. A Kydex pocket sits on a suede-lined leather backer, and retention adjusts two ways: a device under the trigger guard and the screws that hold the pocket to the leather. CrossBreed lists it at $149.95, and Sportsman’s Warehouse has the Glock 20/21 version at $149.99.
Two details from CrossBreed’s page matter. It’s closed bottom, so compensators and long threaded barrels won’t fit. And revolver versions are all molded for the 6 inch barrel: a 4 inch gun leaves empty pocket below the muzzle, and anything longer than 6 inches sticks out the bottom.
Best For: 10mm and .45 semi-autos like the Glock 20, 21 and XD-M.

4. DeSantis Black Mamba: Best Budget Rig for Big Revolvers
- Shell: Black molded nylon
- Fits: S&W X-frame 460 and 500, N-frame and L-frame revolvers, by barrel length
- Retention: Fully adjustable tension device
- List price: $147.99 at DeSantis
Pros
- Carries a 72 oz S&W 500
- Far cheaper than leather
- Right and left hand
Cons
- Nylon looks utilitarian
- Revolvers only
- Not cut for optics
DeSantis says the Black Mamba “carries even the 72 ounce S&W 500 with total comfort and security”, and it does it in molded nylon for much less than leather. DeSantis lists it at $147.99, and retailers on the card above have the S&W 500 version from under $100.
It’s built around specific Smith & Wesson revolvers and barrel lengths, from the 4 inch 500 to the 8 3/8 inch N-frame, with a tension device to set the fit. If your hunting revolver is a Smith, it’s the value pick.
Best For: S&W 460, 500 and N-frame owners on a budget.

5. DeSantis Outdraw: Best Chest Rig for Semi-Autos With Optics
- Shell: Kydex, optics compatible, tension adjustable
- Harness: Swivels at every connection point, fully adjustable, non-slip rubberized shoulder pad
- Fits: Modern semi-autos, from a Sig P365 to a Glock 19
- List price: $172.99 at DeSantis
Pros
- Cut for red dots
- Swiveling harness fits over layers
- Non-slip shoulder pad
Cons
- Priciest DeSantis rig
- Semi-autos only
- Fewer models than the Kenai
The Outdraw is DeSantis’s modern chest rig: a Kydex holster that is “optics compatible and is also tension adjustable”, on a harness that swivels at every connection so you can wear it over or under a jacket. DeSantis lists it at $172.99, and retailers on the card above start around $90.
Best For: Carry pistols with a red dot, on the trail or in the truck.

6. Safariland Chest Rig: Best for Duty Holster Owners
- What it is: A chest mount that replaces the belt attachment on Safariland 6TS and 7TS holsters
- Mount: Three-hole pattern, can be canted; works with the Quick Locking System
- Harness: Three 1.5 in. nylon straps, one-handed quick-attach buckle; right hand only
- List price: $105.50 at Safariland
Pros
- Turns a 7378 into a chest rig
- Keeps ALS retention
- Quick-attach buckle
Cons
- Holster sold separately
- Right hand only
- Bulkier than a molded rig
If you already own a Safariland 7378 or another 6TS or 7TS holster, the Safariland Chest Rig turns it into a chest holster. It replaces the belt attachment, takes the three-hole pattern so you can cant the holster, and runs on three 1.5 inch straps with a one-handed buckle. You keep the ALS retention you already trust. Safariland lists it at $105.50 and Sportsman’s Warehouse had it at $89.97.
It’s right hand only and you need a Safariland holster to go with it. Our best Glock 19 holsters covers the 7378 for that gun.
Best For: Anyone who already owns a Safariland duty or ALS holster.

7. Elite Survival TrailGuard: Best Concealed Chest Holster
- What it is: A chest pack that looks like a binocular harness, with a separate rear gun compartment
- Holster: Included adjustable holster attaches by hook-and-loop and covers the trigger completely
- Carry: High and centered; works on a bike, in a tree stand or under a hip-belt pack
- List price: $79.95 at Elite Survival
Pros
- Nobody can tell it is a holster
- Gun separate from phone and wallet
- Cheapest rig here
Cons
- Slower than an open holster
- Hook-and-loop, not molded
- Bulk depends on your gun
Most chest rigs announce that you’re armed. The TrailGuard doesn’t: Elite Survival says “from the outside it looks like a binocular harness.” Your handgun rides in a dedicated rear compartment, separate from your phone and wallet, in an adjustable holster that attaches with hook-and-loop, covers the trigger completely and fits pistols with red dots. Elite Survival lists it at $79.95.
Best For: Concealed carry on trails, bikes and anywhere an open chest rig would draw attention.
Read the Fine Print: Not Every Chest Holster Is Made for a Loaded Gun
This is the most important thing on the page. Some popular hunting chest “holsters” are not rated for carrying a gun with a round in the chamber. Alaska Guide Creations, which makes well-known bino packs and pistol holsters for them, puts this warning on its own holster listings: “This holster is not designed to safely carry a firearm with a live round in the chamber.”
That’s the maker telling you not to carry a loaded gun in it. Before you trust any chest rig, especially a soft pack-style holster, read the listing for a warning like that. Every pick on this page is a holster built to carry a loaded firearm with the trigger covered.
How to Choose a Chest Holster
- Match the shell to your gun. Molded rigs like the Kenai and CrossBreed fit one gun exactly. Revolver rigs like the Black Mamba and Kodiak Hunter fit specific frames and barrel lengths.
- Check barrel length and the bottom. Closed-bottom rigs won’t take a compensator, and CrossBreed’s revolver versions are cut for a 6 inch barrel.
- Optics: If you run a dot, buy a rig the maker says is optics compatible, like the Outdraw or an optic-cut Kenai.
- Harness size: Check the chest range. The Kenai’s standard harness fits up to 60 inches and its Large up to 80.
- Concealed or open: On a trail near other people, a concealed rig like the TrailGuard keeps you from alarming anyone.

How I Picked These Chest Holsters
I judged each rig on what matters on a trail: whether the harness fights your pack straps, whether the gun stays put on steep ground, whether it works over a rain shell and seated in a truck, and how fast you can reach it with gloves on.
Specs come from each maker’s own product page, including the warnings, and prices come from our live price check across 200+ retailers on October 25, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best chest holster?
For most hikers and hunters, the GunfightersINC Kenai. It is custom molded to your gun, has no straps on the gun, and its harness buckles sit forward so they clear pack straps. A custom Kenai starts at $159 with the harness.
Is a chest holster good for bear country?
Yes. A chest holster keeps a big handgun reachable with a pack on, sitting in a truck or in a tree stand, where a belt holster is blocked by a hip belt. See our 10mm for bear defense guide for the gun side.
What is the best chest holster for a scoped revolver?
The Galco Kodiak Hunter, built for large scoped hunting revolvers and T/C single shots. Galco notes the Taurus Raging Hunter does not fit with quick-detach scope rings.
Can you conceal a chest holster?
Some are built for it. The Elite Survival TrailGuard looks like a binocular harness and carries the gun in a separate rear compartment. Open rigs like the Kenai can go under a jacket but are not designed to hide.
Can I carry a loaded gun in any chest holster?
No. Read the listing. Alaska Guide Creations warns its holster is not designed to carry a firearm with a live round in the chamber. Choose a holster built to carry a loaded gun with the trigger covered.
Will a chest holster fit a gun with a red dot?
Only if it is cut for one. The DeSantis Outdraw is optics compatible, and GunfightersINC makes optic-cut Kenai shells for red dot revolvers.
Can I turn my Safariland holster into a chest holster?
Yes. The Safariland Chest Rig replaces the belt attachment on 6TS and 7TS holsters like the 7378. It is right hand only and lists at $105.50.
Do chest holsters work for women?
Yes, if the harness fits. Check the chest range and strap adjustment. GunfightersINC publishes a guide to chest holsters for women and sizes its Kenai harness by chest measurement.
