Brownells is the Grinnell, Iowa gunsmith supply house that grew into one of the biggest online gun stores in the country. It sells complete firearms, but its real reputation was built on parts, tools, reloading gear and the Gun Techs who answer the phone. The question most people are asking is simpler: is Brownells legit, and is it a good place to spend your money in 2026?
To answer it, I read every Brownells help-center policy page on October 24, 2026, priced 15 identical items at Brownells and at the other stores in our best online gun stores ranking on the same day from our retailer feed, and went through the Brownells Trustpilot profile. Three things I found are not what most reviews still say: the famous Forever Guarantee now covers only Brownells and Sinclair house brands, refunds after 45 days come back as a gift card, and the Edge free-shipping membership no longer has a page on the site.

Brownells Review: The Short Answer
Our Rating: 7/10
Pros
- The deepest catalog of gun parts, gunsmithing tools and reloading gear of any store we rank
- Cheapest or tied for cheapest on 8 of the 15 identical items we priced
- Featured Dealer checkout makes a gun order simple, with flat FFL shipping per order
- Forever Guarantee on Brownells and Sinclair branded products, plus a retail store in Iowa
Cons
- Higher than the cheapest rival on 7 of 15 items, by up to 31.6 percent
- Returns after 45 days come back as a Brownells gift card, not cash
- Promo codes exclude guns, ammo and big brands like Glock, Sig Sauer and Trijicon
- Trustpilot score of 1.5 from 282 reviews, mostly about cancelled orders and slow refunds
Yes, Brownells is legit. It has been selling to gunsmiths since its first catalog in 1947, it runs a real warehouse and retail store off Interstate 80, and it follows federal rules on every gun it ships. It’s the best store we rank for parts, tools and reloading, and it’s competitive on optics and guns that sell at a fixed advertised price. It’s not the cheapest place to buy a gun or a mass-market optic, and its return policy is less generous than its reputation.

Is Brownells Legit?
Brownells is about as established as an American gun retailer gets. Its own history page says Bob Brownell ran a gas station and sandwich shop in Montezuma, Iowa, and that “By 1938, his gunsmithing hobby was making profits”. He began buying extra tools to resell to other gunsmiths, and “The first Brownells catalog, Number One, was sent to customers in 1947”. By 1951 he had closed his gunsmithing shop to supply gunsmiths full time. The company moved into its first purpose-built building in 1973 and today ships from Grinnell.
It’s a licensed dealer that handles guns by the book. Every firearm, receiver, frame and suppressor ships only to a licensed dealer, and the FFL page states that “The recipient of FFL items must be at least 21 years old.” It also sells suppressors and handles the Form 4 side of suppressor transfers. The scam sites that copy store names don’t operate a staffed retail store with “1,200 New & Used Guns On Display”, which is what Brownells lists for its Grinnell showroom.
So the store is real. Whether it’s a good place to buy is a separate question, and the rest of this review answers it with prices and policies rather than reputation.
What Brownells Does Better Than Anyone
Parts. In our own retailer feed, Brownells lists 3,329 gun parts and 2,934 accessories, against 1,218 complete guns. That ratio tells you what the store is. If you need a replacement extractor for a 1950s shotgun, a set of roll pin punches, a barrel vise or a full AR-15 parts list from one cart, Brownells is the first place I look.
The tool side is where it started. Brownells makes and sells bench blocks, punch sets, screwdriver bits and fixtures that most general gun stores don’t stock at all, which is why it shows up on our list of gunsmithing tools you need. Its gun schematics pages let you find a part by its number on an exploded diagram, and the Gun Techs answer build questions by phone, chat and email.
Reloading is the other strength. It carries presses, dies, powder measures and scales from Hornady, RCBS and Redding, and in our price check it was the cheapest store on both reloading items we could match. If you’re getting started, our guides to the best reloading press and reloading basics list what to buy first.
Brownells Prices vs Other Stores: 15 Identical Items
Nobody else ranking for this has priced Brownells against its rivals on the same products. We can, because our site tracks prices from the stores in our ranking every day. I matched 15 items where the maker’s model number appeared in both listings and the product was the same version, then compared Brownells with the cheapest of PSA, Guns.com, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Sportsman’s Guide, Bass Pro, MidwayUSA, EuroOptic, KYGunCo, GrabAGun and Battlehawk on October 24, 2026.

| Item | Brownells | Lowest rival | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crimson Trace CMR-206 green laser | $164.95 | $209.95 (Sportsman’s Guide) | Brownells 21.4% lower |
| Redding LR-1000 powder measure | $269.99 | $311.99 (MidwayUSA) | Brownells 13.5% lower |
| Hornady G3-1500 powder scale | $62.99 | $71.99 (MidwayUSA) | Brownells 12.5% lower |
| S&W SW1911TA E-Series | $1,409.99 | $1,473.99 (Guns.com) | Brownells 4.3% lower |
| Sig P320-SXG Reserve Collection | $2,099.99 | $2,099.99 (Bass Pro, Sportsman’s Warehouse) | Tied |
| Leupold RX-5000 rangefinder | $699.99 | $699.99 (Bass Pro, MidwayUSA, Sportsman’s Warehouse) | Tied |
| Sig MODX-45 suppressor | $999.99 | $999.99 (GrabAGun, KYGunCo, PSA) | Tied |
| Athlon Cronus ATS 35C-400 thermal | $2,299.99 | $2,299.99 (EuroOptic, GrabAGun) | Tied |
| S&W SW1911SC E-Series | $1,469.99 | $1,413.60 (Battlehawk) | Brownells 4% higher |
| Zastava ZPAP85 5.56 pistol | $1,179.99 | $1,119.63 (MidwayUSA) | Brownells 5.4% higher |
| Sig Tango6T 1-6×24 FL-6, FDE | $1,499.99 | $1,399.99 (Bass Pro, Sportsman’s Warehouse) | Brownells 7.1% higher |
| Crimson Trace CMR-209 light | $69.95 | $64.95 (Sportsman’s Guide) | Brownells 7.7% higher |
| BCM RECCE-14 MCMR carbine | $1,775.00 | $1,500.00 (Battlehawk) | Brownells 18.3% higher |
| EOTech EXPS2-2 | $699.00 | $569.99 (EuroOptic) | Brownells 22.6% higher |
| Hornady RAPiD Safe 2700KP | $249.99 | $189.99 (Battlehawk) | Brownells 31.6% higher |
Brownells was the cheapest store on 4 items, tied for cheapest on 4 and higher on 7. Bought at Brownells, the whole basket comes to $14,951.79. Bought item by item at whichever store was cheapest, it comes to $14,426.03, so Brownells ran 3.6 percent over the best possible price. That’s closer than its “premium pricing” reputation suggests, and nobody will actually split 15 orders across eight stores to save that 3.6 percent.
The pattern matters more than the total. The four ties are all products where every store showed the same price, the mark of a fixed advertised price. Brownells won on reloading gear, a laser and one 1911, and lost on the products that discounters push hardest: the EOTech, the BCM carbine and a Hornady pistol safe. Prices move daily, these are before shipping and promo codes, and a 15-item basket is a snapshot, not a census. If the price is the deciding factor, check it first with our guide on how to buy guns online cheaper.
Buying a Gun From Brownells

Every gun you buy online ships to a licensed dealer near you, and Brownells makes that step easier than most. At checkout you can pick a Brownells Featured Dealer, and the FFL page says “Brownells Featured Dealers have already agreed to perform transfers for FFL items purchased from Brownells. There is no need for you to contact a Brownells Featured Dealer.” If you use a different dealer, that dealer has to email a signed copy of their license and the order waits until it arrives.
Shipping on a gun is a flat fee: “Handguns & Frames – $19.99 FFL Shipping” and $14.99 for rifles, shotguns and receivers. The help page adds that the fee “is per order, not per item”, so two pistols in one order cost $19.99 to ship, not $39.98. Your dealer will also charge a transfer fee, and our breakdown of FFL transfer fees shows what that costs in different states. If this is your first online gun purchase, our guide on how to buy a gun online walks through the whole process.
One warning before you order. The return policy says “All firearm and serialized item sales are final” once the gun is transferred to you, and it treats a gun as used once it is transferred, even if it was never fired. Inspect the gun at the dealer’s counter before you sign. If it’s defective before transfer, Brownells will send a return label; after transfer, the maker handles the warranty.
Shipping Costs and Speed
For anything that isn’t a gun, Brownells charges by weight and destination, with the exact cost shown at checkout. Standard delivery takes 4 to 7 business days and is limited to orders of 5 pounds or less. Ground takes 2 to 5 business days, and there are paid 2-day and overnight options for orders placed by 1 pm Central. The shipping page says most orders are processed within one to two business days, stretching to three during big sales.
The fees to watch are the add-ons. Hazardous items such as some solvents and bluing chemicals add $24.99 per package, parts shipping to California add $20.00, and optional Shipping Protection costs $3 to $15 depending on order value. Free standard shipping comes through promo codes, not a membership. The Edge program that once gave members free shipping for an annual fee no longer has a page: brownells.com/edge/ now forwards to the homepage, and the help center doesn’t mention it.
Ammo has its own rules. You must be 18 for rifle and shotgun ammo and 21 for handgun ammo, and the ammo page says “We cannot ship ammunition to the following: Hawaii Alaska P.O. Boxes”. California orders go to an approved ammo dealer, and Illinois buyers must send a FOID card.
The Return Policy and the Forever Guarantee

This is where Brownells has changed the most, and where most older reviews are now wrong. The Forever Guarantee still exists, but the guarantee page limits it to “Brownells and Sinclair-branded products” and says “All other products follow our standard 120-day return policy.” So the Magpul stock, the Aimpoint and the Geissele trigger in your cart get 120 days, not forever.
Within those 120 days, timing decides what you get back. The return policy says “Items returned within 45 days are refunded to the original payment method. Returns after 45 days will be issued store credit via a Brownells Gift Card.” A prepaid return label costs $9.99 out of your refund unless Brownells made the mistake, and “A 15% restocking fee may apply if items are not in resalable condition.” Original shipping, FFL fees and hazmat fees are never refunded, and ammo, primers, powder and body armor can’t be returned at all.
New Brownells-made rifles carry their own warranty against defects, with finish flaws covered for 60 days. That’s fair. The practical rule for everything else is simple: open and check your order the week it arrives, because after day 45 your money stays at Brownells.
Promo Codes and Discounts
Brownells runs frequent sitewide codes, and on the day I checked, the homepage was offering an extra 30 percent off clearance with code FALL30 and 12 percent off rifle triggers. Read the fine print first. The promo terms say codes are “Not valid on ammunition, multi-pack magazines, gun safes, firearms, or reloading component (powders, primers, brass & bullets) purchases, unless otherwise noted.”
The brand exclusion list is long too. It covers Bravo Company, Glock, Leupold, Nightforce, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Streamlight and Trijicon, among others. In practice, codes work on Brownells’ own products, tools and smaller accessory brands, which is where they’re most useful anyway. New email subscribers get 10 percent off a qualifying first order, and the Valor program gives verified military, veterans, police, fire and EMS special pricing through ID.me.
What Customers Complain About

Brownells’ Trustpilot score was 1.5 out of 5 from 282 reviews when I checked, with 81 percent of them one star. The profile is unclaimed, so nobody from Brownells answers there. The five most recent reviews describe a wrong item and a refund still missing weeks later, an ammo order cancelled as a pricing error, high shipping on small items to Alaska, the $9.99 return label taken from the refund on an incomplete order, and backordered primers.
Put that number in context. Brownells doesn’t invite buyers to review it there, so the profile fills up with people who had a problem. But 81 percent one star is still a signal, and the themes line up with the policies above. Backorders are real: the backorder page says items that can’t be backordered “will be cancelled”, and Brownells sends a reminder every 30 days on open backorders. If an item matters, check that it says in stock before you pay.
Brownells vs PSA vs MidwayUSA
| Brownells | Palmetto State Armory | MidwayUSA | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Parts, tools, reloading, gunsmithing | Cheap AR and AK rifles, its own guns, ammo deals | Shooting supplies, reloading, ammo |
| Guns | Big brands plus its own BRN-180 and BRN-22 lines | Huge range, strongest on its own PSA guns | Broad range from the major makers |
| In our price check | Lowest or tied on 8 of 15 | Lowest or tied on 1 of 15 (a tie) | Lowest or tied on 2 of 15 (1 a tie) |

For a cheap AR-15 or a bundle of magazines and ammo, PSA is the better stop, and our honest look at Palmetto State Armory covers its guns and service. For gunsmithing, parts and a big-name gun at a fixed advertised price, Brownells wins. MidwayUSA is the closest match to Brownells on reloading and supplies, though Brownells beat it on both reloading items we matched. Our full online gun store ranking compares all 14 stores side by side.
Who Should Buy From Brownells, and Who Shouldn’t
Buy from Brownells if you’re building, repairing or customizing a gun, you reload, you want one cart for a gun plus everything to set it up, or you’re buying a big-name product that sells at a fixed advertised price everywhere anyway. The Featured Dealer checkout and flat per-order FFL shipping make it a good choice for a first online gun purchase.
Shop elsewhere if price is your only test on a popular gun or optic, you want a cash refund window longer than 45 days, or you need ammo shipped to Alaska or Hawaii. Discount stores like Battlehawk and EuroOptic beat Brownells by 18 to 32 percent on three of our items, and that’s real money on a rifle.
How to Get the Best Deal at Brownells
- Compare the price first. On fixed-price items there’s nothing to gain elsewhere, but on discounted guns and optics there can be hundreds of dollars.
- Put several guns in one order. The FFL shipping fee is charged once per order.
- Use promo codes on tools, parts and Brownells-branded products, which is where they’re accepted.
- Check stock before you pay, so an item doesn’t go to backorder or get cancelled.
- Open your order the week it arrives. Returns inside 45 days go back to your card.
- Buy Brownells-branded tools and parts where you can, since they carry the Forever Guarantee.
Final Verdict
Brownells earns a 7/10. It’s a legitimate, long-running store and the best in our ranking for parts, tools and reloading, and it was cheapest or tied on 8 of our 15 matched items. It loses points because discounters beat it on the popular guns and optics, the Forever Guarantee no longer covers other brands, refunds turn into gift cards after 45 days, and its customer reviews point to real problems with cancelled orders and slow refunds. Shop it for what it does best, check the price on everything else, and open your box the week it arrives.
FAQ: Brownells
Is Brownells legit?
Yes. Brownells is a licensed dealer in Grinnell, Iowa that mailed its first catalog in 1947. It runs a warehouse and a retail store off Interstate 80, and every gun it sells ships to a licensed dealer for a background check.
Is Brownells cheaper than other online gun stores?
Sometimes. We priced 15 identical items on October 24, 2026. Brownells was cheapest on 4, tied on 4 and higher on 7. The whole basket cost 3.6 percent more than buying each item at its cheapest store.
How much does Brownells charge to ship a gun?
$19.99 for handguns and frames and $14.99 for rifles, shotguns and receivers. The fee is per order, not per gun, and your local dealer charges a separate transfer fee.
What is the Brownells return policy?
Most items can be returned within 120 days. Returns within 45 days are refunded to your card; after that you get a Brownells gift card. A $9.99 label fee and up to a 15 percent restocking fee can come off the refund. Guns are final sale once transferred.
Does the Brownells Forever Guarantee cover everything?
No. It now covers Brownells and Sinclair branded products only. Every other brand follows the standard 120-day return policy.
Does Brownells still have the Edge free shipping membership?
Not that we can find. Brownells' Edge page now forwards to the homepage and the help center does not mention it. Free standard shipping now comes through promo codes.
Why does Brownells have bad reviews?
Its Trustpilot score was 1.5 from 282 reviews in October 2026, with 81 percent one star. The complaints are about cancelled or backordered orders, slow refunds, shipping costs and the $9.99 return label fee.
Do Brownells promo codes work on guns?
No. Codes exclude firearms, ammo, multi-pack magazines, gun safes and reloading components, plus brands such as Glock, Sig Sauer, Smith and Wesson and Trijicon. They work on tools, parts and Brownells branded products.
