Quick Take

The Taurus G2S is the single-stack version of the G2c. Same 3.2 in. barrel, same trigger, same controls, with a seven-round magazine in a grip that’s a tenth of an inch thinner. It sells for about $240 new, and it comes with two magazines.

I shot two of them: a black 1-G2S931 for 500 rounds and a stainless 1-G2S939 for 200. The black gun choked twice in its first box and had one light strike later. The stainless gun ran clean, including 50 rounds of +P. Both shot better than a $240 pistol has any right to.

Here’s the catch. Taurus has pulled the G2S from its website, and the gun that replaced the G2 line, the GX2, holds 13 rounds in a frame that’s 0.08 in. wider. So you should buy a G2S for the price, the manual safety and the second-strike trigger. Don’t buy it because you think a single stack is much smaller. Here, it isn’t.

Best For: Buyers who want a cheap 9mm carry gun with a manual safety and two magazines in the box. Not for anyone who wants a red dot, and not for anyone who’d rather have 13 rounds for the same money.

Taurus Dropped the G2S. Here’s What Replaced It

Taurus’s G2 page listed three G2S models through 2025: black, stainless, and stainless with a cyan frame. An archived copy of the stainless G2S page from October 2025 shows a list price of $332.99. The G2 family page was still up in a December 2025 capture. On October 2, 2026, both addresses return a “Page not found” on taurususa.com, the G2 line is gone from the pistol menu, and the site’s product search finds no G2S or G2c at all.

I couldn’t find an announcement from Taurus, so I won’t guess at the reason. What the catalog shows is clear enough. The GX2 now sits where the G2c did, and Taurus no longer lists a striker-fired single-stack 9mm. Here’s how the G2S measures against what Taurus sells now, all from Taurus’s own spec blocks.

ModelCapacityHeightWidthWeightTaurus List
G2S (1-G2S939)7+14.80 in.1.10 in.20.00 oz$332.99 (October 2025)
G2c (1-G2C931-12)12+15.10 in.1.20 in.22.00 oz$303.99 (November 2025)
GX2 Stainless (1-GX2939B)13+14.89 in.1.18 in.19.04 oz$348.99
GX2 T.O.R.O. (1-GX2P931)13+14.89 in.1.18 in.19.04 oz$310.99
G3c (1-G3C931)12+15.10 in.1.20 in.22.00 oz$364.99
GX4 (1-GX4M931)11+14.40 in.1.08 in.18.70 oz$359.99

Read the GX2 row again. It’s 0.08 in. wider and 0.09 in. taller than the G2S, it weighs about an ounce less, and it holds six more rounds. The GX4 is thinner and shorter than the G2S and holds four more. On Taurus’s own numbers, the G2S gave up capacity and got almost nothing back in size.

One more oddity. The last list price for the stainless G2S was $29 higher than the black 12-round G2c. On the street it’s the other way around, which is the reason this gun still sells.

Design Intent: Why Taurus Built It This Way

The G2S came out of the years when a slim single-stack 9mm was the default carry gun. Taurus’s page called it the “single-stack Taurus G2s series” and sold it on comfort. The idea was simple: take the G2c, narrow the grip, keep everything else.

Everything else includes the trigger system, which is the interesting part. Taurus’s G2c and G2s manual describes a striker that’s pre-cocked by the slide, like a normal single action. If a round doesn’t fire, the mechanism switches to double action, so you can pull the trigger again without racking the slide. Taurus calls that restrike. The GX2 that replaced the G2 line is listed as plain single action only. In the current catalog you have to step up to the G3c to get restrike.

You also get a manual safety, a loaded chamber indicator and an adjustable rear sight, and that last one is rare at this price. If a thumb safety is a must for you, our guide to carrying with a manual safety covers the trade-offs.

Taurus G2S Variants

G2S black (1-G2S931): matte black slide, black frame, 7+1, two magazines $244.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse

G2S stainless (1-G2S939): matte stainless slide, black frame, last listed by Taurus at $332.99 $251.99 at Palmetto State Armory

G2S stainless and cyan (1-G2S939C): the third model on the Taurus page through 2025 $259.99 at Sportsman's Warehouse

Black slide with a color frame (1-G2S931DP dark purple, 1-G2S931LP light purple, 1-G2S931T tan) $247.99 at Palmetto State Armory

Stainless slide with a brown frame (1-G2S939B) $260.99 at Palmetto State Armory

Dealers stock more colors than Taurus ever showed on its own page. The purple, tan and brown frames above were all listed at Palmetto State Armory on October 2, 2026, and none of them was on the G2 page in 2025. They’re the same gun. The manual also lists a .40 S&W G2s with a 6+1 magazine at 20.5 oz, but I found none for sale, and the last Taurus page showed 9mm only.

Stainless costs about $3 to $15 more than black, depending on the store. If you carry against your skin in summer, I’d pay it.

Competitor Comparison

The G2S has two kinds of competition: the other cheap single stack, and the higher-capacity guns that now cost about the same.

Taurus GX2 T.O.R.O. ($228.99 to $249.99)

This is the gun that makes the G2S hard to recommend. Palmetto State Armory had the black GX2 T.O.R.O. at $248.99, $9 more than the G2S at Guns.com. For that you get 13+1, an optics-ready slide and a frame that’s 0.08 in. wider. Taurus lists it with one magazine where the G2S ships with two, and there’s no restrike. We covered the launch in our Taurus GX2 T.O.R.O. write-up.

Ruger EC9s ($229.99 to $499.99)

The other budget single stack, and Ruger has pulled it from its site too. The EC9s is the thinner, lighter gun: 0.90 in. wide and 17.2 oz against 1.10 in. and 20 oz. It has fixed sights machined into the slide and comes with one magazine. Classic Firearms listed one at $229.99, and Guns.com had it at $288.99, $49 more than its G2S. If thin is what you want, this is the one that’s really thin. Our Ruger EC9s review has the full test.

Taurus G3c ($229.99 to $304.99)

The G3c is the G2c’s successor and it’s still in the catalog. Taurus lists it at 12+1 with three magazines, the same restrike trigger and a drift adjustable rear sight, at 5.10 in. tall and 22 oz. Sportsman’s Warehouse had a black 10-round version at $289.99, $50 over the Guns.com G2S, and Classic Firearms listed one at $229.99. It’s the pick if you like how the G2S works and want more rounds. Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus ($369.00 to $404)

The Shield Plus is what a slim 9mm looks like when you spend more. It carries 13+1 behind a 3.1 in. barrel, and its trigger is a lot better than the Taurus’s. Our card showed it from $369.00, and Guns.com had it at $392.99, $153 more than its G2S price. Our Shield Plus review covers it.

Verdict: The G2S is still the cheapest gun here. Against its $239.99 Guns.com price, the others ran $9 to $153 more at the big stores. On what you get for the money, the GX2 T.O.R.O. beats it. The G2S’s case is two magazines, a manual safety, restrike and the lowest price of the five. For the wider field, see our best concealed carry guns under $300 and best subcompact 9mm pistols.

Testing Protocol

We shot two guns: a black G2S (1-G2S931) and a stainless G2S (1-G2S939). That’s 700 rounds over four sessions in September at an outdoor range, from 61°F to 88°F. I carried the black gun inside the waistband at 4 o’clock for two weeks.

Ammunition Log

  • Black 1-G2S931, 500 rounds: Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ (250), Federal American Eagle 124 gr FMJ (100), Winchester White Box 115 gr FMJ (100), Federal HST 124 gr (50)
  • Stainless 1-G2S939, 200 rounds: Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ (50), Federal American Eagle 124 gr FMJ (50), Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P (50), Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr FTX (50)

Phase 1: Break-In

Both guns came lightly oiled. The magazines were stiff, and the seventh round took a hard push with the thumb for the first few loadings. In the first 50 rounds the black gun failed to feed twice, at rounds 14 and 37. Both were the first round off a full magazine, nose down on the feed ramp. A tap and a rack cleared each one. It never did it again.

Phase 2: Reliability

After the first box, the black gun fired 450 more rounds with one problem. At round 312, a Winchester White Box cartridge didn’t go off. I pulled the trigger a second time without touching the slide, and it fired. That’s the restrike doing what the manual says it does. The second pull is longer and heavier than the first, and you’ll know it when you feel it.

The stainless gun went 200 rounds without a stoppage. That included 50 rounds of Speer Gold Dot +P, which Taurus’s manual allows in any of its 9mm guns. The +P was snappy in a 20 oz pistol and nothing more.

Phase 3: Accuracy

From a rest at 10 yards, five-shot groups from the black gun averaged 2.1 in. with Federal HST 124 gr, 2.4 in. with American Eagle 124 gr and 2.9 in. with Blazer 115 gr. At 15 yards the American Eagle load opened up to 3.5 in. The black gun shot about 2 in. left out of the box, and the adjustable rear sight fixed that in a few minutes. On most guns at this price you’d be drifting a sight with a punch.

Our trigger gauge read 5 lb 14 oz on the black gun and 6 lb 3 oz on the stainless one, inside the 5 to 9 lb Taurus gives in the manual. The weight is fine. The travel is the problem: a long take-up, a soft wall and a long reset.

Tracking & Observations

After 500 rounds the black gun had a bright wear line on the barrel hood and nothing else worth noting. Two weeks in a holster rubbed the black finish thin at the front corners of the slide. The stainless slide showed no marks. One thing to know before you clean it: the manual has you pull the disassembly latch down and then pull the trigger to take the slide off, so check the chamber twice.

What This Means for You

  • Reliability: Shoot 100 rounds through each magazine before you carry it. Ours settled down after the first box.
  • Ammo Preference: 124 gr loads grouped better than 115 gr in both guns.
  • Accuracy Expectation: 2 to 3 in. at 10 yards from a rest.
  • Maintenance: Takedown needs a trigger pull. Clear the gun, then clear it again.
  • Upgrade Impact: None needed. It ships with two magazines and sights you can adjust.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (8/10)

Three stoppages in 700 rounds, all on one gun, two of them in the first box. The light strike fired on the second pull. That’s good for the money, and short of perfect.

Accuracy (7/10)

Groups of 2 to 3 in. at 10 yards are plenty for a carry gun with a 3.2 in. barrel. The long trigger makes fast, accurate shooting harder than it should be.

Ergonomics & Recoil (7/10)

The grip is slim and the stippled panels hold well. With the flush magazine my little finger had nowhere to go, which is normal for a gun 4.80 in. tall. Recoil is quick but easy to manage. The safety lever is small and stiff, and it goes up for safe, the same direction as a 1911.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (7/10)

Both guns were put together cleanly, with even slide-to-frame gaps and sharp markings. The black finish wears fast at the edges. Stainless holds up better.

Value (7/10)

From $215.01 on our card and $239.99 at Guns.com, it’s the cheapest gun in this comparison, and two magazines come in the box. It would score higher if the 13-round GX2 T.O.R.O. weren’t $9 away.

Features (6/10)

Restrike, a manual safety, a loaded chamber indicator, an accessory rail and an adjustable rear sight. No optics cut, and only seven rounds in the magazine.

Technical Deep Dive

Slide and Barrel

Alloy steel slide in matte black or matte stainless, over a 3.20 in. stainless steel barrel with a 1:10 right-hand twist. Taurus’s photos show TAURUS and MIAMI FL on the left of the slide and FORJAS TAURUS, MADE IN BRAZIL on the right, next to the G2s mark. Dealers list the barrel as 3.2, 3.25 or 3.26 in. It’s the same barrel.

Frame

Polymer, 1.10 in. wide and 4.80 in. tall, with what the manual calls a Picatinny MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail. Taurus’s two documents don’t agree on the rest: the product page says 6.30 in. long and 20.00 oz, and the manual says 6.2 in. and 20.8 oz.

Trigger System

Single action with restrike, as described above, with a blade safety in the trigger. The manual gives 5 to 9 lb. It also says these pistols have no magazine disconnect, so the gun will fire with the magazine out.

Ammunition

The manual says all Taurus firearms chambered in 9mm Luger are approved for SAAMI +P, and that +P+ should never be used. It also warns that +P wears a gun faster. I’d practice with standard pressure and carry what shoots best. Our best 9mm ammo guide has picks.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Failures to feed when new: Ours had two in the first 50 rounds, both off a full magazine. Load the magazines and leave them overnight, then shoot 100 rounds through each.
  • Light strike: Pull the trigger again. The restrike gave our dud round a second hit and it fired. If it doesn’t fire the second time, tap, rack and move on.
  • Shooting left or right: Adjust the rear sight before you blame the gun. Ours was 2 in. left at 10 yards.
  • Hard to load the seventh round: New magazine springs are stiff. A magazine loader costs about $10 and saves your thumb.
  • Finish wear on the black slide: It’s cosmetic. Wipe the slide with an oily rag after carrying, or buy the stainless model.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The G2S is a good cheap pistol that the market has moved past. Some buyers should skip it.

  • Anyone who wants a red dot: The G2S has no optics cut. The Taurus GX2 T.O.R.O. does, for $9 more.
  • Buyers who want the thinnest gun: The Ruger EC9s is 0.90 in. wide and 17.2 oz.
  • People who want more rounds in a small gun: The Taurus GX4 is shorter and thinner and holds 11+1. Palmetto State Armory had one at $279.99.
  • Shooters who care most about the trigger: The Smith & Wesson M&P Shield Plus costs $153 more, and its trigger is where the money went.

Final Verdict

The Taurus G2S works. Ours had three stoppages in 700 rounds, shot 2 to 3 in. groups at 10 yards and came with two magazines, a manual safety and sights I could adjust. At $239.99 that’s a lot of pistol.

It’s also a gun Taurus no longer lists, and the numbers show why. The GX2 that replaced the G2 line is 0.08 in. wider and holds 13. If you want a single stack because you think it’s much smaller, check the table above first. If you want one because you like the safety, the second-strike trigger and the price, buy it while dealers still have stock, and buy a spare magazine with it. For the double-stack original, see our Taurus G2c review, and for the rest of the brand, our best Taurus handguns.

Final Score: 7.2/10. A dependable $240 carry gun that its own replacement beats on paper.
