FAQ: Weapon Lights & Lasers

What is the best pistol light?

The Streamlight TLR-7A ($110 to $130) is the best value for compact pistols with 500 lumens and excellent holster compatibility. The SureFire X300U ($250 to $300) is the gold standard for full-size duty pistols with 1,000 lumens and extreme durability. The TLR-1 HL ($130) splits the difference.

How many lumens do I need?

For indoor home defense, 300 to 500 lumens is plenty. More than 1,000 lumens indoors can create excessive reflected light that hurts your own vision. For outdoor use, 1,000+ lumens provides better throw distance. Candela (beam intensity) matters more than lumens for throw distance.

Are laser sights useful for self-defense?

Visible lasers (red or green) can aid target acquisition in stress situations when you may not be able to get a traditional sight picture. Green lasers are visible in daylight; red lasers are not. IR lasers are essential for night vision use. For most people, a weapon light is a higher priority than a laser.

Will a weapon light fit my holster?

Most quality holsters are molded for specific light models. A holster made for a Glock 19 with TLR-7A will not fit a Glock 19 with an X300U. Always check that your holster manufacturer makes a version for your specific gun and light combination before buying.
