AR-Stoner Parts & Accessories

If you have built an AR-15 on a budget with parts from MidwayUSA, you have probably used AR-Stoner. It is the retailer’s own house brand for AR components: complete uppers at about $350, bolt carrier groups at about $75, barrels from about $80, plus handguards, muzzle devices and the rest of the parts it takes to assemble a working rifle. It is not a boutique name and it does not try to be. Here is who they are, what they make, and what is worth buying.

Table of Contents

Who AR-Stoner is

AR-Stoner is the in-house AR parts brand of MidwayUSA, the Columbia, Missouri retailer. It covers uppers, barrels, handguards, bolt carrier groups, gas systems and furniture at value prices, under a name that nods to AR-15 designer Eugene Stoner.

The important thing to understand is that AR-Stoner is a house brand. MidwayUSA did not start as a parts empire. It opened on June 18, 1977, as a small gun shop called Ely Arms, run by Larry Potterfield and his younger brother Jerry in a metal pole building. Jerry sold his half to Larry in 1980 and went home to farm. The family-owned business is now a retailer with $525 million in 2024 revenue, and AR-Stoner is its private label.

Who actually makes the parts is the question every buyer asks, and I have no firm answer. MidwayUSA does not publish a manufacturer. Forum posters on Sniper’s Hide say the line is outsourced, and posters on the 65 Grendel forum have long said the barrels come from E.R. Shaw, but that is hearsay, and the supplier may have changed over the years. Treat any confident answer you read with suspicion.

The name deserves a footnote too. Eugene Stoner (1922 to 1997) designed the AR-15, and I found nothing linking this brand to him or his estate. It is a tribute in a name, chosen because it says what the parts are for. On the quality ladder, AR-Stoner sits in the budget tier.

What AR-Stoner makes

Upper receivers

This is the deepest part of the catalog, with 78 complete upper listings in our feed from about $186 for a 7.5-inch pistol upper to about $552. A 16-inch 5.56 starts at about $350, and there are stripped, billet and EV2 and T-Series options as well. Read each listing to see what is included. Not every complete upper comes the same way, so confirm whether the bolt carrier group and charging handle are in the box before you compare prices.

Barrels

AR-Stoner barrels cover much more than 5.56: .223 Wylde, .300 Blackout, 7.62×39, 6.5 Grendel and 9mm for the AR-15, with .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor for the AR-10. Most prices sit between about $40 and $130. For a budget barrel they shoot better than the price suggests, but I would not expect match accuracy from every one.

Handguards

The line runs from basic quad rails at about $45 to free-float M-LOK aluminum rails, which lets a budget builder mount lights, grips and sling points without premium-rail pricing.

Bolt carrier groups and gas systems

The Mil-Spec nitride BCG at about $75 is the obvious buy, with nickel boron and lightweight versions at about $120, plus bolts, cam pins, gas tubes and gas blocks. These are the parts that make the rifle cycle, so they are also the first ones I would consider upgrading on a hard-used gun.

Muzzle devices

Flash hiders, six-prong brakes and compensators start around $27 for 1/2-28 and 5/8-24 threads, cheap enough to experiment with.

Stocks, furniture and magazines

Rounding it out are A2 stocks at about $50 to $60, a $5 A2 grip, buffer tubes and buffers including 9mm versions, and magazines.

Pros

  • Low prices across a whole build
  • Wide caliber choice, 9mm to 6.5 CM
  • Parts in one MidwayUSA cart

Cons

  • Maker not published
  • Sold almost only through MidwayUSA
  • Upper contents vary by listing

Build quality and where it is made

Here is the honest read. Because MidwayUSA does not name its suppliers, you cannot trace a part back to a factory or assume two items in one order share a maker, and country of origin is something to check on each listing. The parts have run fine for me, and Midway has a name for replacing bad parts with no fuss, which is the real value of buying from a big retailer. What you are not buying is the single-house quality control or the match-grade tolerances of a premium brand. For range guns, first builds, spares and budget projects, it does the job. For a duty rifle or a precision build, spend up. Check headspace on any new barrel and bolt pairing, and function-test before you rely on the rifle.

How AR-Stoner compares

AR-Stoner belongs in the value conversation with Palmetto State Armory, Anderson Manufacturing, Bear Creek Arsenal and TacFire. PSA is the closest rival and the bigger ecosystem, with a huge in-house catalog. Anderson competes on rock-bottom prices for lowers and parts. Against Aero Precision, AR-Stoner is cheaper and a notch behind on reputation, and Aero is the smarter buy if the budget can stretch. AR-Stoner’s real advantage is convenience: a builder ordering everything else from Midway can add matching parts to the same cart. It rarely wins “best”, but it can win “easiest and cheapest in one place”.

Who should buy what

  • First-time builder: a complete 16-inch upper, after confirming what is in the box.
  • Finishing a build cheaply: the Mil-Spec nitride BCG.
  • Caliber experimenter: a barrel in .300 Blackout or 6.5 Grendel at a low-risk price.
  • AR pistol builder: a 7.5-inch complete upper.
  • Trying a muzzle device: a six-prong brake.
  • MidwayUSA shopper: small parts added to an order you are already placing.

Look elsewhere if you are building a duty rifle, a precision rig or anything where consistency is critical. Step up to Aero Precision, BCM or something similar. And if you want to know exactly who made your barrel, this is not the brand for you.

The AR-Stoner philosophy

AR-Stoner exists to solve one problem for one retailer: how to offer customers affordable AR-15 parts under its own roof. The answer is a private label sold at value prices with the convenience of one catalog. That is the whole philosophy, and it is about access rather than innovation or prestige. MidwayUSA has built its reputation on customer service, and the house brand leans on that more than on any engineering story.

How to choose your AR-Stoner parts

Start with the build. If you are assembling a first AR-15, add up a complete upper, a BCG if one is not included, and a charging handle, then compare that with buying the same parts separately and with a complete upper from a rival. If you have a partial build, fill the gaps: a BCG and gas system to make it run, a handguard for your accessories, a barrel in your chosen caliber. Match the chambering, twist and gas length carefully, since AR-Stoner sells a wide spread of all three. Because you cannot rely on a single maker’s tolerances, check fit on critical parts when they arrive, while the return window is still open.

The name behind the counter

There is something fitting about a budget house brand named after Eugene Stoner. His rifle was built to be light and modular, and that modularity is why a retailer that began as one Missouri gun shop can sell you most of an AR-15 in a single cardboard box. AR-Stoner will never carry the prestige of the name it borrows. But for a lot of first rifles, it is where the build began.

Where AR-Stoner Fits in Our Buying Guides

AR-Stoner FAQ

What is AR-Stoner?

AR-Stoner is MidwayUSA's in-house brand of AR-15 and AR-10 parts: uppers, barrels, handguards, bolt carrier groups, muzzle devices and furniture, sold at value prices.

Who makes AR-Stoner parts?

MidwayUSA does not publish a manufacturer. Forum posters say the line is outsourced and that barrels come from E.R. Shaw, but that is unconfirmed, and the supplier may have changed over the years.

Is AR-Stoner connected to Eugene Stoner?

I found no connection. Eugene Stoner, who died in 1997, designed the AR-15, and the name works as a tribute to him. The brand belongs to MidwayUSA.

Are AR-Stoner parts any good?

For range guns and first builds, yes, for the money. The barrels are the best value in the line. With no published maker, check fit on critical parts and spend up for a duty rifle.

Does a complete AR-Stoner upper include a BCG?

Do not assume so. Contents vary by listing, so check whether the bolt carrier group and charging handle are included before you compare prices. A Mil-Spec nitride BCG adds about $75 if you need one.

Where do I buy AR-Stoner?

From MidwayUSA. All 340 AR-Stoner parts listings in our direct catalog are sold by MidwayUSA, and you may see the occasional listing elsewhere through deal sites.

How does AR-Stoner compare to PSA?

Both are budget AR brands. PSA has the bigger in-house ecosystem, while AR-Stoner is a private label sold by one retailer. Compare the full build cost, including anything a complete upper leaves out.

What tier is AR-Stoner?

Budget tier: value-priced parts for range guns, first builds and spares, with complete 16-inch uppers from about $350, not for premium or precision use.
