S&W Puts the M&P15 AXE in 300 Blackout

Last updated July 2026 · By Nick Hall, has run suppressed 300 Blackout builds since the cartridge was still a wildcat curiosity

Quick take: The M&P15 AXE 300 Blackout is here, as an 8-inch SBR at $1,499 and an 8-inch pistol at $1,479. Both run Gemtech’s GVAC gas system, which vents excess gas forward instead of into your face. This is S&W’s second run at the cartridge, and the first one that looks built for it.

  • What it is: The M&P15 AXE line in 300 Blackout, with an 8-inch barrel in both an SBR and a braced pistol.
  • Price: $1,499 for the SBR, SKU 13888. $1,479 for the pistol, SKU 14604.
  • Where: Listed now on smith-wesson.com, shipping through the normal dealer network.
  • Why it matters: A factory 300 Blackout host built around suppressor use, rather than a 5.56 rifle rebarreled and hoped for.

Smith & Wesson has been here before, and that is the interesting part. The company listed an M&P15 in 300 Whisper back in 2011, a 16-inch gun in black and Realtree camo that quietly left the catalog and took the chambering with it. Fifteen years later they are back, and the gun is a completely different argument.

The Gas System Is the Actual News

Everything else on this rifle is a parts-bin decision. The gas system is not, and it is why the AXE is worth more than a spec-sheet glance.

GVAC comes from Gemtech, which Smith & Wesson owns. It is still direct impingement, but the gas block carries an expansion chamber. Gas gets siphoned off to cycle the bolt carrier, excess collects in that chamber, and it vents forward out the muzzle once the bullet has left rather than back through the receiver.

Anyone who has run a short suppressed AR knows the problem it is aimed at. Gas to the face, a filthy bolt carrier, and eyes watering by round thirty. Whether the chamber delivers on a sustained string is a range question, and that is the honest caveat until somebody puts a few hundred rounds through one.

What’s in the M&P15 AXE 300 Blackout

Both variants share a core. The barrel is 8 inches of 4150 CMV, stress relieved, with 5R rifling in a 1:7.5 twist and an Armornite finish, and the muzzle is threaded 5/8×24 with a protector fitted.

The handguard is a 7-inch Midwest Industries Combat M-LOK free-float unit with a seven-sided profile, which is a nicer part than this price bracket usually buys. Controls are ambidextrous across the bolt release, magazine catch and safety, and the charging handle is a Radian Raptor.

The SBR wears a Magpul CTR stock and folding sights. Both guns take an M&P grip with four interchangeable backstraps and ship with a single 30-round PMAG.

Why 8 Inches and 1:7.5 Are the Right Answers

300 Blackout was designed around a short barrel. The powder burns fast enough that a 9-inch tube gives up very little against a 16-inch one with subsonic loads, which is the whole reason the cartridge exists and why a 16-inch 300 Blackout has always been slightly beside the point.

The 1:7.5 twist matters more than it looks. Heavy subsonic bullets in the 190 to 220 grain range need a fast twist to stabilize, and a slower barrel will keyhole them at distance. If you want the deep detail, our breakdown of 300 Blackout against 5.56 covers where each one earns its keep.

Here is the quiet joke in the spec sheet. That 2011 M&P15 in 300 Whisper also had 5R rifling and a 1:7.5 twist. Smith & Wesson had the barrel right a decade and a half ago and put it on a 16-inch rifle nobody wanted.

And the twist rate is where a lot of budget 300 Blackout builds quietly fall apart. Slower barrels handle light supersonic loads perfectly well, then struggle to stabilize the heaviest subsonic bullets, which is precisely the ammunition somebody buying a suppressor host intends to shoot.

Two ammunition worlds, one chambering. Supersonic 300 Blackout is a short-range hunting and defensive round, while subsonic loads are held below the speed of sound so the suppressor has something to work with. A gun that only handles one half of that is half a gun.

The Stamp Is the Real Price Difference

Twenty dollars separates the SBR from the pistol on paper. In practice the SBR is a registered short-barreled rifle, so it needs an ATF Form 4 and the wait that comes with it, while the braced pistol goes home the same day as an ordinary Title I firearm.

For a gun aimed squarely at suppressor owners that calculation is less painful than it used to be, because most buyers here are already sitting in the NFA queue for the can. If you are not, our guide to buying a suppressor walks the paperwork, and the suppressor roundup covers what actually pairs with a 5/8×24 muzzle in this caliber.

Fifteen years ago Smith & Wesson built a 300 Whisper rifle with the right barrel and the wrong length, and the market ignored it. This one is 8 inches, threaded, and vents forward. The cartridge has not changed. The gun around it finally has.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Smith & Wesson M&P15 AXE?

The AXE is Smith & Wesson's suppressor-oriented M&P15 line. It uses Gemtech's GVAC gas system, an expansion chamber in the gas block that vents excess gas forward out the muzzle instead of back through the receiver.

How much does the M&P15 AXE in 300 Blackout cost?

Smith & Wesson lists the 8-inch SBR, SKU 13888, at $1,499 and the 8-inch pistol, SKU 14604, at $1,479.

What is the barrel twist on the M&P15 AXE 300 Blackout?

Both variants use an 8-inch 4150 CMV barrel with 5R rifling in a 1:7.5 twist and an Armornite finish. The fast twist is what stabilizes heavy subsonic bullets in the 190 to 220 grain range.

What are the muzzle threads on the M&P15 AXE?

The barrel is threaded 5/8x24, the standard thread pitch for 300 Blackout and .30 caliber suppressors, and ships with a thread protector fitted.

What is the difference between the AXE SBR and the AXE pistol?

The mechanical package is the same. The SBR wears a Magpul CTR stock and is a registered short-barreled rifle requiring an ATF Form 4, while the pistol uses a brace and transfers as an ordinary Title I firearm with no NFA paperwork.

Was this Smith & Wesson's first 300 Blackout rifle?

No. Smith & Wesson listed an M&P15 in 300 Whisper starting in 2011, a 16-inch rifle that also used 5R rifling and a 1:7.5 twist. It later left the catalog. The AXE is the company's return to the chambering.

Does the AXE come with sights?

The SBR ships with folding adjustable sights and is optic ready. Both variants use an M&P grip with four interchangeable backstraps and include one 30-round PMAG.

Is 300 Blackout worth it in an 8-inch barrel?

That is the length the cartridge was designed around. 300 Blackout burns its powder fast enough that a short barrel gives up very little against a 16-inch one, especially with subsonic loads, which is why 8 and 9-inch hosts dominate the category.
