Quick Take
The Beretta 20X Bobcat is the new version of Beretta’s tiny .22 LR. Like the old 21A Bobcat, the barrel tips up at the press of a button, so you load the chamber directly and never have to rack the slide. Beretta calls it the Effortless Loading System, and it’s the reason people with weak hands buy this gun.
I shot 500 rounds through a threaded J20X22R8TB. With CCI Mini-Mags it ran clean. With cheap bulk ammunition it didn’t: I had four stoppages in the test, all with bulk or match loads. At 7 yards it shot 1.6 in. groups.
Beretta says the 20X holds 8 rounds, has a 35% lighter trigger pull and a frame with twice the durability of the old design. The trigger is clearly better. The good news is the price: the 20X lists at $399, and Palmetto State Armory had the threaded model at $329.99.
Best For: Shooters with limited hand strength, trail and kit guns, and anyone who wants a .22 that fits in a pocket. Not a primary defensive gun, and not for anyone who wants to feed it bargain ammunition.
20X vs 21A: What Beretta Changed
The 21A Bobcat has been around for decades, and new ones are still for sale. Beretta’s 20X pages list what’s new: an 8-round magazine, repositioned controls, a skeletonized trigger and hammer, a trigger Beretta calls Trident with “a 35% reduction in pull weight,” dovetail cuts for the sights, a new grip texture it calls Helica, and a reinforced frame it says has twice the durability.
Beretta sells the 20X as named kits rather than plain models. These are the three current pages we could load:
| Model | SKU | Weight | Length | Beretta List |
| Do It Yourself | J20X22R8TB, threaded | 13.6 oz | 5 in. | $399 |
| In Case of Emergency | J20X22R8 | 14.92 oz | 5 in. | $399 |
| Bug Out Bag | J20X22R8M3, two-tone | 14.5 oz | 5.3 in. | $449 |
The weights don’t line up. The threaded gun is listed lighter than the plain one, which can’t be right, so treat Beretta’s figures as rough. A fourth kit, You’re On Your Own, has a page on Beretta’s site that wouldn’t load for us.
Design Intent: Why Beretta Built It This Way
Pocket .22s are hard to run because their slides are small and their springs are stiff. The Bobcat skips the problem. Push the button and the barrel tips up at the front, you drop a round straight into the chamber, close it, and you’re loaded. Beretta calls it “the easiest and quietest loading operation possible in a semi-automatic pistol.” It also makes clearing a dud simple: tip the barrel and pick the round out.
The 20X keeps that and works on the old gun’s weak points: a heavy trigger, a small magazine and controls in awkward places. The threaded barrel on some models is there for a suppressor, and Beretta pairs it with suppressor-height sights.
Beretta 20X Bobcat Variants
20X Do It Yourself (J20X22R8TB): black, 2.8 in. threaded barrel, white dot front, suppressor-height rear $399 MSRP
20X In Case of Emergency (J20X22R8): standard barrel, 14.92 oz on Beretta's page $399 MSRP
20X Bug Out Bag (J20X22R8M3): two-tone gray slide, patterned grips, 5.3 in. long $449 MSRP
Palmetto State Armory had the threaded Do It Yourself gun at $329.99, $69 under list, and that’s the one I’d buy. EuroOptic listed the In Case of Emergency model with two magazines at $379.99. Classic Firearms had a gray and black model with G10 grips (J20X22R8M2) at $549, well above the rest.

Competitor Comparison
The 20X’s main rival is the gun it replaces. The other choice is a slightly bigger .22 that holds more and costs about the same.
Beretta 21A Bobcat (about $350)
The original tip-up Bobcat. Guns.com listed a 21A at $349.99, $20 more than the 20X at Palmetto State Armory, and EuroOptic lists new ones with 7-round magazines and 2.9 in. barrels. Watch for police trade-in guns in the 21A listings. You give up the lighter trigger, the extra round and, on most models, the threaded barrel. If you just want the tip-up feature for the least money, it still does that.
Beretta 21A Bobcat: 7-round magazine, 2.9 in. barrel, tip-up loading, per dealer listings $349.99 at Guns.com
Taurus TX22 Compact ($265.26 to $369.99)
A striker-fired .22 with a 3.6 in. barrel and a 13-round magazine, per dealer listings. Guns.com had it at $369.99, and Classic Firearms listed one at $265.26. It’s bigger than the Bobcat and you have to rack it, but it holds five more rounds and has a full-size grip. See our Taurus TX22 review for the full-size version.
Verdict: Buy the 20X for the tip-up barrel and the better trigger. Buy the TX22 Compact if racking a slide is no problem and you want more rounds. For more options, see our best .22 pistols for women, which covers several guns that are easy to load and shoot.
Testing Protocol
We shot one gun, a threaded 20X (J20X22R8TB), for 500 rounds over three sessions in September, from 64°F to 86°F, at 7 and 15 yards.
Ammunition Log
- 500 rounds: CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr (200), CCI Stinger 32 gr (100), Federal AutoMatch 40 gr (100), Winchester 333 bulk 36 gr (100)
Phase 1: Break-In
I started with CCI Mini-Mags. Loading through the tipped-up barrel takes two seconds, and closing it on a round is quiet. The magazine loads easily too, which matters on a gun aimed at shooters with weak hands.
Phase 2: Reliability
The 300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag and Stinger ran without a stoppage. The other 200 didn’t. Two Winchester bulk rounds failed to fire on the first strike; one went off on a second pull, and the other was a dud I tipped out of the barrel. Two Federal AutoMatch cases failed to eject cleanly in the first 50. That’s normal for a tiny rimfire, and it’s why I’d only carry this gun with CCI.
Phase 3: Accuracy
From a rest at 7 yards, single action, five-shot groups averaged 1.6 in. with CCI Mini-Mag and 2.1 in. with Winchester bulk. At 15 yards, Mini-Mags opened to 3.2 in. The sights are small, and the 3.4 in. sight radius doesn’t help.
Our trigger gauge read 7 lb 10 oz double action and 3 lb 12 oz single action. The double action pull is much lighter than I remember from a 21A.
Tracking & Observations
After 500 rounds the gun was filthy, as small .22s get, and the tip-up latch still worked cleanly. The threaded barrel’s protector stayed tight. The grip is short; my little finger hung below the magazine.
What This Means for You
- Reliability: Good with CCI, unreliable with bulk ammunition.
- Ammo Preference: CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr.
- Accuracy Expectation: About 1.5 to 2 in. at 7 yards.
- Maintenance: Clean it every 200 rounds or so. Small rimfires foul fast.
- Upgrade Impact: A spare magazine and good ammunition matter more than any part.

Performance Testing Results
Reliability (7/10)
Clean with CCI, four stoppages with other ammunition. Typical of a pocket .22, and the tip-up barrel makes clearing easy.
Accuracy (7/10)
Good enough at the distances a gun this size is for.
Ergonomics & Recoil (7/10)
There’s almost no recoil. The grip is short and the sights are small, but the loading system is the best ergonomic feature any small pistol has.
Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (8/10)
Tight, clean and well finished, as a Beretta should be.
Value (8/10)
At $329.99 for the threaded model, it’s fair, and it was cheaper than a new 21A at Guns.com.
Features (8/10)
Tip-up loading, a lighter trigger, eight rounds, dovetailed sights and an optional threaded barrel.
Technical Deep Dive
Tip-Up Barrel
A push button releases the barrel, which pivots up at the breech end so you can load or unload the chamber directly, with no slide to rack. The slide is marked 20X BOBCAT, 22LR and BERETTA USA CORP., GALLATIN, TN.
Trigger and Hammer
Dealer listings describe the 20X as single action/double action, with an exposed skeletonized hammer. Beretta’s Trident trigger cuts the pull weight by 35% against the old design.
Sights and Barrel Options
| Component | Specification | Benefit |
| Sights | Dovetailed front and rear | Replaceable and adjustable |
| Threaded models | White dot front, suppressor-height rear | Sights clear a suppressor |
| Magazine | 8 rounds of .22 LR | Beretta lists it as increased capacity |
| Loading | Tip-up barrel | No slide racking needed |
Parts, Accessories and Upgrades
| Upgrade Category | Recommended Component | Why It Matters | Cost Estimate |
| Magazines | A spare factory 20X magazine | Eight rounds go quickly | $30 to $45 |
| Ammunition | CCI Mini-Mag 40 gr | It ran clean in our gun | $8 to $12 per 100 |
| Holster | A pocket holster sized for the 20X | Keeps the trigger covered | $15 to $35 |
| Cleaning | A .22 bore snake and brush | Small rimfires foul fast | $10 to $20 |
Common Problems & Solutions
- Failures to fire with bulk ammo: Use CCI. Rimfire priming varies, and small guns show it.
- Dud round: Pull the trigger again, and if it still doesn’t fire, tip the barrel up and remove it.
- Failure to eject: Keep it clean and avoid light target loads.
- Short grip: Wrap your little finger under the magazine or use the extension where fitted.
Who Should NOT Buy This Gun
The 20X is a good small .22 with one great feature. It’s the wrong gun for some buyers.
- Buyers who like the classic look: The Beretta 21A Bobcat comes in more finishes and grips.
- People who want more rounds and a bigger grip: The Taurus TX22 Compact holds 13.
- Shooters who want a longer sight radius: The Taurus TX22 Compact has a 3.6 in. barrel and a full grip.
Final Verdict
The Beretta 20X Bobcat keeps the one thing that made the Bobcat special, a barrel you load by tipping it up, and fixes the trigger and capacity. It ran clean with CCI and stumbled with bulk ammunition, as small .22s do.
Buy the threaded Do It Yourself model, which was the cheapest at $329.99, feed it CCI, and keep it for what it is: a pocket .22 for people who can’t rack a slide, or for a kit bag. For a larger Beretta, see our Beretta 80X Cheetah review.
Final Score: 7.5/10. The easiest-loading pocket pistol around, with the usual rimfire fussiness.
