The AA-12 is a fully automatic 12-gauge combat shotgun, fed from 8-round box magazines or 20-round drums, that fires around 300 rounds per minute with surprisingly little recoil. For a civilian in the United States it is effectively impossible to buy. Every working AA-12 is a post-1986 machine gun, and the one attempt at a legal semi-auto version was recalled by ATF in 2019.

So this page does two jobs. First, the honest story of the AA-12: where it came from, why it’s famous, and exactly why you can’t have one, including the semi-auto version that almost made it to market. Second, the part you can act on: the bullpup shotguns that get you closest to the AA-12’s size and firepower, priced live across the 200+ retailers we track.

What Is the AA-12?

Maxwell Atchisson designed the original Atchisson Assault Shotgun in 1972, but his work seems to have produced only a handful of prototypes. In 1987 he sold the rights to Jerry Baber of Military Police Systems, and the AA-12 most people know is really MPS’s gun. Machinist Boje Cornils spent 19 years reworking it, with 188 changes to the original blueprint, including moving it from blowback to a gas-operated, locked-breech design.

The result is unusual in almost every way. It fires only in full auto, but slowly enough, around 300 rounds a minute, that a trained shooter can let off single rounds with short trigger presses. It fires from an open bolt like a submachine gun. MPS said its gas system and recoil spring together soaked up about 90% of the felt recoil of a normal 12-gauge, and the stainless build was claimed to run 10,000 rounds before it needed cleaning. MPS also paired it with FRAG-12 explosive shotgun rounds as a combined weapon system.

It never won a large military contract. Its fame comes mostly from movies, TV and video games, which is exactly why so many people search for one to buy.

Can You Buy an AA-12?

Not a real one. The military AA-12 is full-auto only, which makes it a machine gun under the National Firearms Act (26 U.S.C. 5845(b)). Under 18 U.S.C. 922(o), civilians can only own machine guns that were lawfully possessed before May 19, 1986. The AA-12 that exists today was developed by MPS after 1987, so there’s no pool of transferable ones for collectors to trade. The guns that exist sit with the military, police and licensed dealers who hold them as post-1986 dealer samples.

Our Glock 18 explainer walks through the same 1986 machine gun ban in more detail, and why the 2026 NFA changes for suppressors and short-barreled rifles didn’t touch machine guns at all.

The Semi-Auto AA-12 That Almost Happened

There was one serious attempt to sell a legal AA-12 to the public. In 2018 Sol Invictus Arms, working with contract manufacturer Tactical Superiority and with Boje Cornils, announced a semi-automatic AA-12 for civilians. RECOIL reported it would fire from a closed bolt to stay legal, carry an 18.5-inch barrel, and go on pre-order for $3,250, with a “Boje Signature” limited edition of 1,000 guns and delivery expected in December 2018.

It didn’t last. In 2019 ATF ordered a recall of civilian AA-12s built by BC Engineering, Cornils’ company, taking the position that the semi-auto shotgun was a machine gun. AmmoLand’s coverage reported that the issue centered on parts of the receiver being shared with the full-auto version. Sol Invictus paused production. If you see a “semi-auto AA-12” for sale today, treat it with extreme caution and have an NFA-specialist dealer look at its paperwork before any money changes hands.

That leaves the bullpup shotgun as the realistic answer. Bullpups put the action behind the grip, which is what gives them an AA-12-like short overall length with a full-length barrel, and several of them carry 14 to 16 rounds without a drum.

If what draws you to the AA-12 is a short 12-gauge that keeps firing, the TS12 is as close as the law allows. It’s semi-automatic, so every press of the trigger fires one shell, and it carries 15 rounds in three rotating tubes of five, more than an AA-12 box magazine. When one tube runs dry you rotate the next one into place by hand, and you can load each tube with something different.

It’s heavy, the trigger is stiff (we measured 11 lb 9 oz in our Tavor TS12 review), and tube rotation takes practice. But no other shotgun on this list puts that much semi-auto firepower in a package this short.

Best For: Anyone who wants AA-12-style capacity and fire rate in a legal semi-auto.

The DP-12 gets to AA-12 levels of firepower by a completely different route. It has two barrels, each fed by its own tube. One pump stroke loads both chambers, and you fire them with two pulls of the trigger. That means two rounds for every stroke of the pump and 16 rounds before you reload.

It’s a pump, so it isn’t fussy about ammunition the way gas guns can be, and it’s one of the most striking-looking shotguns you can buy.

Best For: Shooters who want maximum rounds per manipulation from a pump.

The KSG is the shotgun that made people think bullpup shotguns could be mainstream. Two magazine tubes sit side by side under the barrel, and a selector switches between them, so you get 14+1 rounds in a gun just over 26 inches long. Our Kel-Tec KSG review has the full range test.

It’s a pump, so it’s slower than an AA-12 or a TS12, but it’s lighter and cheaper than both, and the two-tube design means you can keep slugs in one and buckshot in the other.

Best For: A compact, high-capacity pump at a mid-range price.

The AA-12 feeds from a detachable box or drum, and most bullpups don’t. The BP-12 does. It’s a magazine-fed semi-auto bullpup, so reloads are a magazine swap rather than feeding shells into a tube, which is the closest feel to the AA-12’s manual of arms on this list.

It’s also the budget pick by a long way. We covered it when it dropped to $199, and our feeds show it well under the price of the TS12 or DP-12. Box-fed budget semi-autos can be ammo-sensitive, so plan to test the loads you’ll use.

Best For: AA-12-style magazine reloads on a tight budget.

The KS7 is the KSG’s simpler sibling, with one magazine tube instead of two and a carry handle with a built-in sight channel. It holds half as many rounds, but it’s lighter, simpler to run, and the cheapest Kel-Tec bullpup to get into.

Best For: First-time bullpup buyers who want a short, handy pump for the house.

How Close Do the Alternatives Really Get?

Be honest with yourself about which part of the AA-12 you’re after, because no legal shotgun gives you all of it.

If it’s the rate of fire, nothing civilian comes close, and nothing legal can. A semi-auto like the TS12 or BP-12 fires as fast as you can press the trigger, and a practiced shooter can run one quickly, but every round needs its own press. That’s the line federal law draws between a shotgun and a machine gun, and it’s the same line that sank the semi-auto AA-12.

If it’s the capacity, you can match it and beat it. An AA-12 box magazine holds 8 rounds. The TS12 holds 15+1, the DP-12 16 and the KSG 14+1, all without a drum hanging off the gun. Only the AA-12’s 20-round drum carries more, and it costs a lot of weight and bulk to do it.

If it’s the soft recoil, a gas-operated semi-auto is your best bet. The TS12 spreads recoil out the way gas guns do, while pumps like the KSG, KS7 and DP-12 hit harder and ask you to run the action between shots. Pick a load you can control. Lighter “low recoil” buckshot makes any of these far easier to shoot fast.

If it’s the reload, the BP-12 is the only one here that swaps a detachable magazine like the AA-12. The tube-fed guns hold more on board but are slower to top off, one shell at a time.

If it’s the size, every gun on this list wins. Bullpup layout puts an 18.5-inch barrel in a gun far shorter than a conventional shotgun with the same barrel, which is the AA-12’s real-world advantage indoors and in vehicles.

Why Not Just Buy a Drum-Fed Semi-Auto?

A few conventional magazine-fed semi-auto shotguns take drums, and on paper that’s even closer to the AA-12. In practice, 12-gauge drums are heavy, bulky and ammo-picky, and a loaded drum adds a lot of weight without the recoil system that made the AA-12 so controllable. For most buyers, a bullpup with 14 to 16 rounds on board is the better gun. If you want a conventional semi-auto anyway, our best semi-auto tactical shotguns roundup covers them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can civilians buy an AA-12?

No. The AA-12 is a full-auto machine gun, and 18 U.S.C. 922(o) bans civilian possession of machine guns not lawfully possessed before May 19, 1986. The AA-12 in production today was developed after 1987, so there are no transferable ones for civilians.

Is there a semi-auto AA-12?

Sol Invictus Arms announced one in 2018 at $3,250, but in 2019 ATF ordered a recall of civilian AA-12s built by BC Engineering, classifying them as machine guns, and production was paused. There is no legal semi-auto AA-12 in regular production.

How fast does the AA-12 shoot?

Roughly 300 to 360 rounds per minute, slow for an automatic weapon. That low rate lets a trained shooter fire single shots with short trigger presses even though the gun is full-auto only.

How many rounds does an AA-12 hold?

The MPS version feeds from an 8-round box magazine or a 20-round drum.

The IWI Tavor TS12, a semi-auto bullpup 12-gauge that holds 15+1 rounds in three rotating tubes. For magazine-fed reloads like the AA-12, the Century BP-12 is the budget option.

Who invented the AA-12?

Maxwell Atchisson designed it in 1972. He sold the rights in 1987 to Military Police Systems, where machinist Boje Cornils spent 19 years redesigning it into the gas-operated AA-12 known today.

Is the DP-12 a machine gun?

No. The Standard Manufacturing DP-12 is a pump-action double-barrel shotgun that fires one shot per trigger pull. It is legal under federal law, though some states and cities limit magazine capacity.

Why is the AA-12 so famous?

It is a full-auto shotgun with very low felt recoil, a rare combination, and it has appeared widely in movies, TV shows and video games. It never won a major military contract.
