The Vaultek Slider Series is a slim, upright pistol safe that hangs under a desk or on the side of a nightstand and slides a holstered pistol out on ball-bearing rails. It’s 16-gauge steel, 2.6 inches wide and 7.8 pounds, and it comes two ways: the Slider Essential at $279.99 with a fingerprint reader or $229.99 with a keypad only, and the Slider ViSN + Biometric at $359.99 with Wi-Fi app alerts.
Nobody ranking for this safe has published a hands-on review. The top results are retailer listings. So I worked from Vaultek’s own spec sheets and fit guide, checked twelve handguns against the fit guide using the measurements in our own reviews, and read the owner reviews on Vaultek’s pages, which are more useful than the listings. The short version: it’s a fast, well-made safe with a tighter fit and a thirstier battery than the product pages suggest.

Quick Take
The Slider’s appeal is the draw. Open it and the drawer runs out on its rails with the pistol standing in a foam holster in what Vaultek calls the ready position, so there’s no reaching into a box. Mounted on the side of a nightstand or under a desk, it’s one of the fastest-presenting pistol safes at this price.
Check two things before you buy. First, fit: the holster takes a pistol up to 5.675 inches tall, which rules out some full-size guns, and owners report that optics and flared magwells make it tighter still. Second, power: the Essential runs up to a year on four AAA batteries, but the ViSN is rated for just 3 months on batteries and is meant to stay plugged in.
Best For: A compact or slim full-size pistol without a big optic, mounted beside the bed or under a desk. Buy the Essential unless you’ll keep it plugged in and want app alerts.
The Slider, Measured
Vaultek gives the outside as 11.35 inches high, 9.1 inches deep and 2.6 inches wide, and its Slider fit guide marks the space a pistol can use: 8.875 inches of maximum length and 5.675 inches of maximum height. I drew both to scale with a Glock 17 in the holster.

The pistol hangs muzzle-down in a foam holster, so its length runs top to bottom and its height, from the top of the slide to the base of the magazine, runs front to back. The 8.875-inch length is generous. The 5.675-inch height is not: the full-size pistols in our table run from 5.4 to 5.73 inches tall. That one number decides whether your gun fits.
What Fits: 9 of 12 on Paper
I checked twelve handguns against Vaultek’s fit guide using the dimensions in our own reviews. Nine fit inside both limits. Three don’t.

A Glock 17 Gen 6 fits with 0.205 inch of height to spare, and a Sig P320 and S&W M&P9 M2.0 with 0.175. The Walther PDP, at 5.7 inches tall, is 0.025 inch over the height limit, and a Girsan MC1911 at 5.73 is 0.055 over. Those are tiny margins, and the foam may give a little, but they’re on the wrong side of Vaultek’s own number. The Ruger GP100 with a 4.2-inch barrel, at 9.5 inches long, doesn’t come close.
Length looks easy until you read the owner reviews. One owner measured only 8 1/4 inches of usable room against the 8.875 Vaultek quotes, and said a full-size CZ-75 wouldn’t fit. If that’s right, a Glock 34 at 8.82 inches, a Girsan at 8.74 and a Beretta 92FS at 8.5 are in trouble too, which leaves seven of the twelve. Our best nightstand gun safes ranking has roomier options.
Optics, Lights and Flared Magwells
Vaultek sells the Slider as optics ready, with an optics pocket in the holster. Owners have found the limits. One returned an SL2i the day it arrived because the lower half of the optics pocket is narrower than the fit guide shows: a Glock 17 Gen 6 with a Holosun 507C-X3 stuck halfway down and the door wouldn’t close. Another found that two full-size 1911-style pistols with Holosun 507 Comp optics didn’t come close to fitting, and that some guns with a flared magwell won’t fit because of the width.
It’s not all bad news. One owner calls it a tight fit for a mid-sized pistol with a light, but it works, and another’s Sig P365 XMacro fits. The rule is simple: if your pistol wears an enclosed or large optic, a weapon light or an extended magwell, measure it against the 5.675-inch height and try it before the return window closes.
Essential or ViSN?
Both Sliders share the same body, rails, holster and 16-gauge steel. The differences are in the lock and the power.

The Essential stores 20 fingerprints and runs on four AAA batteries that Vaultek rates for up to a year or more. It also comes as a keypad-only model for $229.99, $50 less. The ViSN stores 80 fingerprints, connects to Wi-Fi on 2.4 or 5 GHz networks, and sends live alerts to Vaultek’s app for $80 more than the Essential biometric. One ViSN owner likes the alerts for access, impact and humidity, but says they can arrive anywhere from seconds to 20 minutes late.
The Battery Problem
Vaultek’s ViSN spec sheet gives its battery life as 3 months using low power mode, on four AAA batteries that serve as backup to the included AC adapter. In other words, it’s built to stay plugged in. Owners who mounted it away from an outlet aren’t happy: one reports fresh batteries dying in weeks, another in a truck says the safe has died a few times. One also found that codes and fingerprints set up in ViSN mode don’t carry over when you switch to Essential mode, so you have to enroll them again.
The Essential is the better choice if there’s no outlet nearby, at up to a year or more on four AAA batteries. Even then, Vaultek’s own summary of its Essential reviews notes inconsistent battery performance. Vaultek’s Essential page also contradicts itself on power: its description mentions an included power cable, while its spec table lists the USB-C cable as not included. Check the box when it arrives, and either way, change the batteries on a schedule.
Mounting: Under a Desk, Beside the Bed

The Slider comes with a proprietary mounting plate that uses the standard VESA 75mm and 100mm hole patterns, the same ones as a TV or monitor mount. Screw the plate down and the safe locks onto it; an authorized user can lift the safe off in seconds. Vaultek suggests mounting it under a desk or nightstand, on a bookshelf or in a vehicle.
Owners like the flexibility. One mounted it in a drawer to grab an everyday carry pistol on the way out, and points out you can fit a second bracket in the car and move the safe between them. At 7.8 pounds, it’s light enough to install alone. Make sure the drawer has room to slide fully open where you mount it, and on the ViSN, that there’s an outlet within reach of the cable.
The Fingerprint Reader and Keypad
The reader is a 160 by 160 pixel sensor at 508 dpi, imaging at 40 frames per second, the same specification on both models. Owner reports are mixed. Some say it works very well, especially if you enroll the same finger several times at different angles, which the 80 slots on the ViSN make easy. Others say it doesn’t always read, or only reads reliably when the finger is dry and at room temperature, which matches what we found testing Vaultek’s Barikade on our biometric gun safe reliability page.
The backlit keypad has a built-in proximity sensor, takes a 4 to 8 digit code and offers 480,000+ possible combinations. Set it up even if you bought the safe for the fingerprint reader, because it’s your way in with wet hands. One owner warns that the program button is inside and takes some finding, and another who locked themselves out without the key had to breach the safe, adding that it was a pretty tough little fellow. Keep the backup key somewhere you’ll find it.
Steel and Security
The body is progressive formed 16-gauge carbon steel with a single anti-impact latch. That’s thinner than the 14-gauge Vaultek uses on the cheaper Barikade Series 2, so the Slider trades a little steel for its fast-presenting design. It isn’t fire rated. The CPSC recall database returns no recall for any Vaultek product.
Vaultek lists both Sliders as California DOJ certified. The state’s roster of certified firearm safety devices that we checked lists the ViSN as NSL2i-BK, but we didn’t find the Essential SL2i-BK or SL2e-BK on it, so California buyers should check the exact model number before buying.
The Warranty
The Slider is a metal safe outside the Barikade line, so it sits in Vaultek’s second warranty tier: a two-year manufacturer’s warranty, plus one more year when you register it, three years in total. It covers the original purchaser only, from an authorized dealer, and isn’t transferable. Owners on Vaultek’s pages describe quick help, including a repair for a Slider that failed after about two years. Our gun safe warranty comparison puts that in context.
Slider vs Night Guard vs Barikade

For the bedside, the Hornady RAPiD Safe Night Guard is the main alternative. It sits on top of the nightstand, opens from an RFID tag, takes pistols up to 9.2 inches long laid flat, and runs on wall power with AAA backup; Palmetto State Armory had it at $285.99. The Barikade Series 2 is $199.99 with a fingerprint reader and fits every full-size pistol we checked lying flat.
Buy the Slider if presentation matters most and your pistol fits its 5.675-inch height. Buy the Night Guard for a bigger or optic-equipped pistol on top of the nightstand. Buy the Barikade for the least money and the thicker steel.
Who Should NOT Buy the Vaultek Slider
- Owners of a tall full-size pistol. Over 5.675 inches tall, it won’t fit by Vaultek’s own guide.
- Anyone with a large optic, a light or a flared magwell. Try it before the return window closes.
- Anyone mounting the ViSN away from an outlet. Three months on batteries is the rated figure.
- Anyone who wants 14-gauge steel. The Barikade has it for less.
- Anyone storing more than one pistol. It holds one plus a spare magazine.
Price and Where to Buy
Vaultek lists the Slider Essential at $279.99 with the fingerprint reader and $229.99 with a keypad only, and the ViSN + Biometric at $359.99. A Titanium Gray keypad version is $169.99 on Vaultek’s store under an SE20 part number. On our retailer feed on October 24, 2026, none of our trusted retailers carried the Slider; the cards below track it live.

Final Verdict
The Vaultek Slider does one thing better than any safe at its price: it puts a holstered pistol in front of you, ready to grab, from a box slim enough to hide beside a bed. It’s well made, quick to mount and quick to move. But it’s fussier than it looks. The 5.675-inch height limit rules out some full-size pistols, optics can stop the door closing, and the ViSN needs an outlet.
Measure your pistol with its optic against the fit guide, buy the Essential unless you’ll keep the ViSN plugged in, enroll each finger several times, set a keypad code, and register it for the third warranty year. If your gun fits, it’s one of the fastest bedside draws you can buy for under $300.
FAQ: Vaultek Slider
Is the Vaultek Slider worth it?
If your pistol fits, yes. It presents the pistol in a holster on ball-bearing rails, mounts under a desk or beside a bed, and is 16-gauge steel. Check the 5.675-inch height limit first, and buy the Essential unless you will keep the ViSN plugged in.
What size gun fits in the Vaultek Slider?
Vaultek's fit guide allows a pistol up to 8.875 inches long and 5.675 inches high, plus one spare magazine. A Glock 17, Glock 19 and Sig P320 fit. A Walther PDP at 5.7 inches tall and a Girsan MC1911 at 5.73 are just over the height limit.
Will a pistol with an optic fit in the Vaultek Slider?
Sometimes. The holster has an optics pocket, but owners report its lower half is narrower than the fit guide shows; one Glock 17 Gen 6 with a Holosun 507C-X3 kept the door from closing. Measure the pistol with its optic against the 5.675-inch height.
What is the difference between the Slider Essential and ViSN?
The Essential stores 20 fingerprints and runs up to a year or more on four AAA batteries, for $279.99, or $229.99 keypad-only. The ViSN stores 80 fingerprints, adds Wi-Fi app alerts and an AC adapter, and is rated for 3 months on batteries, for $359.99.
How long do the Vaultek Slider batteries last?
Vaultek rates the Essential for up to a year or more on four AAA batteries. The ViSN is rated for 3 months in low power mode and is designed to stay plugged in, and owners away from an outlet report much shorter battery life.
What gauge steel is the Vaultek Slider?
Progressive formed 16-gauge carbon steel, with a single anti-impact latch, at 7.8 pounds. Vaultek's Barikade Series 2 uses thicker 14-gauge steel.
How do you mount a Vaultek Slider?
With the included mounting plate, which uses VESA 75mm and 100mm hole patterns. Screw the plate under a desk, on the side of a nightstand or in a vehicle, and the safe locks onto it. An authorized user can lift it off in seconds.
What warranty does the Vaultek Slider have?
Two years from Vaultek, plus one more year when you register it, three years in total. It covers the original purchaser only and isn't transferable.
