What Makes a Shotgun Legal or Illegal in California
Shotguns are the easiest firearms to buy in California. Pump-actions have zero compliance headaches. No feature restrictions, no roster, no microstamping. Semi-automatic shotguns are where it gets complicated. Under Penal Code 30515, a semi-auto shotgun becomes an assault weapon if it has any ONE of these features:
- Folding or telescoping stock
- Pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
- Thumbhole stock
- Detachable magazine (box-fed semi-auto shotguns are assault weapons)
- Fixed magazine capacity over 10 rounds
Notice what’s NOT on the list: barrel length (as long as it’s over 18 inches with 26 inches OAL), tube magazine capacity (tube-fed is not “detachable”), and pistol grips on pump-actions. A pump shotgun with a pistol grip is fine. A semi-auto with a pistol grip is an assault weapon. Same grip, different action, different legal status. California is that specific.
The Simple Rule for Shotgun Buyers
Pump-action: Buy whatever you want. Pistol grip, folding stock, extended tube, tactical rail. All legal. No restrictions beyond federal law (18-inch barrel, 26-inch OAL).
Semi-auto: Stick with a traditional stock (no pistol grip, no thumbhole, no folding/collapsing), a tube magazine (not box-fed), and you’re fine.
