The POF Revolution DI did something that seemed impossible a few years ago. It put a full .308 Winchester into a package that weighs less than most AR-15s. Aero Precision has been operating under a court-appointed receivership since May 2026 and is rebuilding inventory at a slower pace, which is the likeliest reason complete M5s are thin on the ground. They are still manufacturing and shipping. If you want one built rather than assembled, buy an in-stock rifle from a retailer with a returns policy behind it rather than placing a backorder.

These receivers are the foundation of countless custom .308 builds, and for good reason. The forged 7075-T6 aluminum is strong, the machining is clean, and the fit between upper and lower is consistently tight across production runs.
The M5E1 Enhanced upper is the standout feature. Instead of a traditional barrel nut and handguard mounting system, the handguard bolts directly to the receiver with screws. This makes installation foolproof and creates an incredibly rigid platform. With the 18″ 4150 CMV barrel and quality match ammo like Federal 168gr Gold Medal, I’ve seen these rifles consistently shoot sub-MOA groups.
The downside is weight. At roughly 9.6 pounds unloaded, this is a traditional full-size AR-10. Add an optic, bipod, loaded magazine, and you’re pushing 13 pounds. The FN SCAR 17S needs no introduction. Adopted by USSOCOM as the Mk 17, this is arguably the most combat-proven .308 semi-auto on the planet. The short-stroke gas piston system runs cleaner than any direct impingement rifle, and the reliability in adverse conditions is legendary. Sand, mud, freezing cold: the SCAR eats it all and keeps running.
The supply story took a turn worth knowing about. FN ended the legacy SCAR run in October 2025, and for a few months the civilian gun really was finished. Then FN brought it back on 15 January 2026 with roughly 25 changes, among them a hydraulically buffered two-piece bolt carrier and a longer M-LOK receiver. FN lists it as available for commercial sale at $3,999. The rifle you will find discounted at a dealer is the older NRCH version, which is the one FN retired.
At 8.0 pounds with a 16.25″ barrel (not 17″ as some sources incorrectly list), the SCAR 17S is lighter than most AR-10s with comparable barrel lengths. The side-folding polymer stock shortens the overall package for transport, and the non-reciprocating charging handle carried over to the 2026 gun, which settles the one real ergonomic complaint about early SCARs.
The downside has always been price and proprietary parts. FN magazines, rails, and accessories cost more than AR-10 equivalents, and the aftermarket is smaller. But for a rifle that has literally been to war and come back, that’s a reasonable tax to pay.

The Gen3 is a significant improvement over earlier versions. PSA worked out the feeding and ejection issues that plagued the Gen1 and Gen2 models, and the current production rifles are reasonably reliable right out of the box.
