Creedmoor or Creedmore? Where the Name Comes From
It is Creedmoor, and it is said CREED-more. Roughly a sixth of the people who reach this page searched for something else: creedmore, creedmor, or “6.5 creed more” as two words. That is not carelessness. It is a place name doing a job nobody explains, so here is the explanation.
In 1872 the New York State Legislature and the newly formed National Rifle Association bought seventy acres of farmland on Long Island from a farmer named Bernardus Creed. Colonel Henry G. Shaw of the NRA’s range committee walked the ground, decided the open scrub looked like the moorland of northern England, and called it Creed’s Moor. The range opened on 21 June 1873, on ground that is now Queens Village in New York City.
So the second half is moor, the landscape, not more, the quantity. A century later a target-shooting supply company took the range’s name, and in 2007 Hornady’s Dave Emary designed a new cartridge with Dennis DeMille, then vice-president of product development at Creedmoor Sports. They named it after the company, which was named after the range, which was named after a farmer and a patch of scrub in Queens.

Where to Buy 6.5 Creedmoor Ammo
The 6.5 Creedmoor is mainstream now, but it is still not stocked by every small-town gun store, and price per round varies more than it does for .308.
