Four things changed since the last update. Del-Ton announced closure in April 2025 and the Echo came off this list. Ruger bought Anderson’s assets on 1 July 2025 and discontinued the brand, so the AM-15 is out rather than sending you after a rifle nobody supports. You will still see Anderson rifles on retailer shelves while existing stock clears, and they are fine guns, but the brand behind the warranty is gone. The Rock River RRage and the S&W M&P15 Sport III have both crossed $500 and moved down to “Want to Spend More?” below. And a brand-new Ruger AR is worth a look at the bottom, even though it sits over $500.

The rule for this list: the cheapest in-stock configuration has to land at or under $500. The ranges below show the spread across configurations, so the top of a range can run over. Worth saying plainly, the budget market has moved this year and the PA-15 now sits right on the $500 line rather than comfortably under it. The 2026 sub-$500 market has shifted hard since we last refreshed this list. Del-Ton Inc. closed its doors in April 2025 after 25 years, knocked out by PSA and Bear Creek pricing. Ruger bought Anderson Manufacturing in Hebron, Kentucky, retired the Anderson brand, and rolled out the Harrier, its first sub-$700 AR built on that line.

So start small. Then progressively talk yourself into more expensive weapons later. We’ll get you on that road right now with a semi-auto rifle for less than $500 that does the job, and we’ve added a stretch pick at the bottom for the Harrier crowd.

1. Palmetto State Armory PA-15 Freedom Rifle

The PSA PA-15 Freedom is the cheap AR-15 I still hand people first. It starts at $500, runs a 4150V nitride barrel and a Carpenter 158 bolt, and nothing else here has PSA’s parts supply behind it.

The ATI Alpha Maxx stands out because of its polymer upper and lower receivers. Yes, plastic. Before you panic, it’s a carbon-fiber reinforced polymer with zinc metal inserts at the common stress points like the buffer tube housing and rear takedown pins.

It’s seriously clever engineering and this is the second model, after the success of the ATI Omni Hybrid. This might not be the gun that turns into the Glock of the AR-15 world, but whoever comes next will owe it a massive debt.

Two obvious benefits. The production price is insanely low, and the weight savings are huge. This is one of the lightest AR-15 rifles on the market, which makes it great for newer shooters or anyone who doesn’t want to lug around a heavy rifle.

The trade-off is that it doesn’t feel as solid as a forged aluminum receiver and the durability isn’t quite on par. But for the price, it’s crazy good.

Best For: Gadget lovers. It’s new tech. Not perfect, but very cool.

Radical Firearms is a Houston, Texas-based manufacturer that builds everything in-house. The RF-15 has earned a reputation as a solid budget rifle that punches above its weight class after some early issues with quality control and weak peripherals.

You get a 16 inch barrel with a free-float M-LOK handguard, which is better than what most budget rifles offer at this price point. The SOCOM contour barrel is properly finished and Radical’s quality control has improved significantly over the years.

Clean it before you shoot it and this is the AR-15 on this page I would most readily trust for home defense. Not fancy. But it goes bang every time you pull the trigger and that’s what counts.

Andro Corp Industries builds in Winter Garden, Florida, and it is the newest name on this list by some distance. It replaces the Anderson AM-15 that held this slot until Ruger bought Anderson’s assets and retired the brand.

One spec does the heavy lifting here. The bolt carrier group is HPT/MPI tested, meaning every bolt is proof-fired with an overpressure round and then magnetic-particle inspected for cracks. That is a process you normally start paying for around the $900 mark. At this price most builders simply do not test the bolt at all.

The rest of the rifle is sensible rather than exciting. Mid-length gas softens the impulse and gives the system more dwell time, the 1:7 twist runs heavy 77-grain match ammo as happily as cheap 55-grain, and the 15 inch free-float rail leaves plenty of room for a light and a hand stop. The catch is scale. Andro Corp is a small shop, so if something goes wrong you are waiting longer than you would with PSA, and stock disappears for weeks at a time. The warranty is genuinely lifetime, which is the trade you are making.

Bear Creek Arsenal stormed into the budget AR-15 space with some of the lowest prices around. I mean, this costs less than a basic handgun. The BC-15 is a no-frills rifle built for people who want to shoot without breaking the bank.

It comes with a 16 inch barrel, M-LOK handguard, and standard mil-spec furniture. Fit and finish won’t win awards, but the price is hard to argue with. BCA also offers a wide range of calibers and configurations if you want something different, including the BC-15 in 300 Blackout for roughly the same money if a suppressor host is on your list later.

BCA differentiates itself with a unique side-charging handle option, which mimics the manual of arms of an AK-47 and appeals to shooters moving from legacy platforms. Our field evaluations confirm that the BC-15 is surprisingly accurate, often delivering 1.5 to 2 MOA groups with standard brass ammunition. That’s a feat typically reserved for rifles double its price.

Bear Creek is not the cheapest number on this page. The ATI Alpha Maxx undercuts it by about $95, and the ATI MilSport just edges it on forged receivers too. What Bear Creek gives you that neither of those does is the side-charging upper.

The ATI MilSport is the other half of American Tactical’s budget line, and it is the opposite of the Alpha Maxx at number two. Where the Alpha Maxx bets everything on polymer, the MilSport is a conventional forged-aluminum AR-15 that happens to cost polymer money.

Forged 7075 receivers are the thing you are buying. They take every standard part, they do not flex, and they are what almost every rifle above $700 uses. Getting them in the low $400s is the whole argument for this rifle, and it makes this the cheapest forged-receiver pick on the page.

The 1:8 twist is the other quiet win. It stabilizes everything from 55-grain bulk ammo to 77-grain match without re-barreling, which is more than the 1:9 barrels on some rivals manage. Our 5.56 ammo guide covers what that actually means at the range.

Be straight about the trade-offs. The phosphate bore is not as easy to clean as a nitride one, and ATI’s consistency swings more than PSA’s, so inspect the rifle properly when it lands at your FFL. Assembly is in Summerville, South Carolina, and the warranty is limited lifetime to the original owner.

One thing to watch at the checkout. The cheapest MilSport listings are the shorter-rail “Honoring Freedom” edition; the 15 inch free-float version specced above runs closer to $450. Both are forged, both are under $500.

Ruger announced the Harrier in January 2026, the first AR-15 to roll off Ruger’s newly acquired Hebron, Kentucky line, formerly Anderson Manufacturing,. It is positioned squarely at the entry-level segment Del-Ton used to occupy, and frankly it’s the rifle Del-Ton would have built if it had survived.

Two SKUs ship at launch. Model 28601 is the carbine-gas variant with M4-style stock, A2 grip, and a partial Picatinny handguard with M-LOK slots at $699 MSRP. Model 28600 is the mid-length-gas version with a full-length top rail, free-float handguard, Magpul DT-Carbine collapsible stock and MOE-K2 grip at $749 MSRP. Both share the same 16.1-inch nitrided 1:8 government barrel and Type III hard-anodized 7075 forged receivers.

The smart bit is the tension screw between upper and lower receiver. It eliminates the slop you get on most budget ARs, which means tighter fit, better accuracy, and zero rattle. American Rifleman’s review put nearly 300 rounds through the rifle without a single malfunction, including extended rapid fire that cooked the handguard to untouchable temperatures. The verdict from the NRA’s editor: “It works, plain and simple.”

Honest pricing reality check. The discounting has already started: against a $699 MSRP the 28601 now runs $550 to $630, and PSA has had it lower still on promotion. That is $50 or so over our $500 ceiling rather than the $200 it launched at. If you want a Ruger AR for life-of-the-rifle service, this is the buy.

How I Tested These AR-15s

Five of these seven rifles have 500 or more rounds through them, mixing brass, steel and 77-grain match. Two are ranked on specification and review consensus instead, and I say so in their sections.

Round counts vary by rifle and I would rather say that than round it up. The PSA PA-15, Radical RF-15 SOCOM, Diamondback DB15, ATI Alpha Maxx and Bear Creek BC-15 each have 500 or more rounds through them, owned or on extended loan. The mix was 60% brass-cased 55-grain M193, 25% steel-cased 62-grain from Wolf and Tula, and 15% 77-grain SMK match for accuracy work, tracking failures to feed, failures to extract, light primer strikes and bolt-over-base malfunctions.

The Andro Corp ACI-15 Bravo and ATI MilSport are new to this list and are ranked on verified manufacturer specification and professional review consensus, not on my own round count. Both get updated the moment I have rounds through them. The Ruger Harrier ranking leans on American Rifleman’s published test rather than mine, and that is cited in its section.

Accuracy was tested at 100 yards from a sandbag rest with a 4-16x scope mounted on each rifle, five-round groups, three groups per ammo type. Trigger pulls were measured with a Wheeler digital scale across ten pulls and averaged. Carbine-length and mid-length gas systems were noted, and dwell time issues with steel-cased loads were flagged where they occurred.

Cheap AR-15 Buying Tips

Gas system: Most budget AR-15s use carbine-length gas on 16-inch barrels. Mid-length runs softer, so recoil is lighter and parts last longer. The Radical Firearms RF-15 SOCOM, Andro Corp ACI-15 Bravo, and Ruger Harrier 28600 all use mid-length, which is the spec to want if you can swing it.

Trigger: Most of these ship with a mil-spec single-stage GI trigger. Functional, not great, 6-7lb with some grit. The Diamondback DB15 is the exception at a 3.5lb single stage, the best factory trigger on this list. A drop-in trigger, at $80 to $150, is the single best upgrade you can make to any budget AR-15 and it transforms the shooting experience.

Chamber: A 5.56 NATO chamber eats both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington, so it is the safe default and it is what every rifle here uses. A .223 Wylde chamber shoots both too and squeezes slightly tighter groups from match .223, which is worth looking for if you plan to shoot for accuracy rather than volume. Never put 5.56 through a barrel marked .223 Remington only.

Twist rate: A 1:8 twist 5.56 barrel handles 55-grain through 77-grain bullets, covering varmint duty, coyote hunting, and match-grade range work without re-barreling. The ATI MilSport and Ruger Harrier spec 1:8; the PSA PA-15 and Andro Corp Bravo run 1:7, which does the same job and stabilizes the heaviest match bullets slightly better.

Bolt carrier group: Look for a Carpenter 158 steel bolt with an 8620 carrier and a properly staked gas key. PSA specs this outright, and Andro Corp goes further by HPT/MPI testing every bolt it ships. Ruger, Bear Creek and ATI all run M16-profile carriers with staked keys but do not publish the bolt steel, which is normal at this price and not a dealbreaker.
