Quick Take

The Beretta 92XI takes the 92 and changes the two things people have complained about for decades. The safety moves from the slide to the frame, where your thumb is. And the long double action first pull is gone: this is a single action only pistol that you carry cocked and locked, like a 1911.

I shot 800 rounds through a 15-round J92FSR915. It didn’t have a stoppage. The trigger broke at 3 lb 14 oz, and from a rest at 25 yards the gun put five rounds of 147 gr match ammunition into 1.7 in. It’s the most accurate 92 I’ve shot.

The surprise is the price. Beretta lists the 92XI at $969. New ones were selling from about $730 to $800, and the camouflage Combat models were the cheapest of the lot. That puts a single action 92 with a fiber optic sight and an optics-ready slide below what its double action sibling costs.

Best For: Range and competition shooters, and home defense buyers who are comfortable with a cocked and locked pistol. Not for anyone who wants a double action first shot, and not a concealed carry gun at 33.3 oz.

92XI vs 92GTS vs 92FS: Which 92 Does What

Beretta now sells the 92 with three different trigger systems, and the names don’t tell you which is which. These figures are from Beretta’s 92XI SAO page and its pages for the other models. The 92FS line is from our own review gun.

ModelActionSafetyBarrelCapacityBeretta List

92XI SAO TacticalSingle action onlyFrame-mounted thumb safety5.1 in., threaded10, 15 or 18$1,069

The 92XI and the 92GTS are the same size on Beretta’s chart: 8.5 in. long, 5.4 in. tall, 1.5 in. wide, 33.3 oz. What separates them is the lever on the frame. On the 92GTS it’s a decocker that drops the hammer to half cock for a double action first shot. On the 92XI it’s a safety, and there is no double action at all.

At list the single action gun costs $70 more. In stores it was the other way around. Guns.com had the 92GTS at $849 and a plain 92XI at $792.99, and a Multicam 92XI Combat at $733.99. If you want the 92XI’s trigger, you aren’t paying extra for it right now.

One thing to watch on any of them: capacity is set by the SKU. The 92XI SAO comes as the J92FSR920 with 10-round magazines, the J92FSR915 with 15 and the J92FSR921 with 18, all at $969. Read the last digits before you buy.

Design Intent: Why Beretta Built It This Way

Beretta’s own copy calls the frame-mounted safety “long-awaited,” and that’s fair. On a 92FS the safety sits on the slide, where it’s a stretch to reach and easy to knock on when you rack the gun. Moving it to the frame puts it under your thumb, in the same place as a 1911’s.

Once the safety is on the frame, a single action trigger makes sense. Beretta fits what it calls the Xtreme-S trigger: flat-faced, with DLC-coated parts and a skeletonized hammer, and “the option to go cocked and locked.” The frame is the slimmer Vertec style with a straight backstrap, the front sight is fiber optic, and the slide is cut to take an optic plate. The plate and the optic are extra.

It’s built in the United States. The slide on Beretta’s product photos is marked BERETTA U.S.A. CORP., GALLATIN, TN, and MADE IN USA.

Beretta 92XI Variants

92XI SAO (J92FSR920, J92FSR915, J92FSR921): gray slide, black frame, 10, 15 or 18 round magazines $969 MSRP

92XI Combat series: the same pistol in camouflage Cerakote, including Multicam, BDU, DCU, Chocolate Chip and Tiger Stripe $969 MSRP

92XI Squalo (J92XFMSA21LCO): Toni System flared magwell, Hogue grips, three 22-round magazines $999 MSRP

92XI SAO Tactical: 5.1 in. threaded barrel, suppressor-height sights, 8.7 in. long $1,069 MSRP

The Combat guns are the odd ones. They list at the same $969 as the plain pistol, and they were the cheapest 92XIs we found: Guns.com had the Multicam at $733.99, $235 under list. If you don’t mind the paint, that’s the deal.

The Squalo goes the other way. It lists at $999 and Guns.com had it at $1,043.99, over list. You get a magwell, Hogue grips and three 22-round magazines for the money, and if you’re going to shoot matches that’s a fair package. I couldn’t find the Tactical at a store we trust. Classic Firearms listed it from $918.88.

A note on Beretta’s numbers. Its chart gives every one of these guns the same 33.3 oz, including the Squalo with its magwell and the Tactical with its longer barrel. Treat that figure as nominal.

Competitor Comparison

A single action 9mm with a thumb safety is a small club. Here’s what else is in it, plus the two Berettas you’ll cross-shop.

Beretta 92GTS ($849)

The same frame and slide with a double action/single action trigger and a frame-mounted decocker. Guns.com and Sportsman’s Warehouse both had it at $849, against a $899 list. Buy this one if you want a double action first shot and no manual safety. It was $56 more than the plain 92XI at Guns.com.

Springfield SA-35 ($672.93 to $741.60)

The other single action 9mm near this price. It’s Springfield’s take on the Hi-Power, with a 4.7 in. barrel and 15+1 per the dealer listings. Brownells had it at $699.99, $93 less than the plain 92XI. The SA-35 is the traditional choice, a Hi-Power pattern with walnut grips. See our Hi-Power roundup for the family.

CZ Shadow 2 ($1,197.99 to $1,249.99)

The competition benchmark. The Shadow 2 is a steel-framed double action/single action gun that weighed 46.5 oz in our review, 13 oz more than the Beretta, and holds 17+1. Palmetto State Armory had it at $1,247.99, which is $455 more than the 92XI. If you shoot matches every month, the weight is worth it. Our CZ Shadow 2 review has the test.

Verdict: The 92XI is the 92 for people who never liked the 92’s trigger or its safety. At $730 to $793 it undercuts the 92GTS and sits about $90 to $145 over a 92FS, and that’s money well spent. For more, see our best competition pistols and best Beretta pistols.

Testing Protocol

We shot one gun, a 15-round 92XI SAO (J92FSR915), for 800 rounds over five sessions in September at an outdoor range, from 60°F to 89°F. For the last 200 rounds I fitted Beretta’s Trijicon-footprint optic plate and a red dot.

Ammunition Log

  • Practice, 600 rounds: Federal American Eagle 124 gr FMJ (300), Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ (250), Sellier & Bellot 124 gr FMJ (50)
  • Match and defensive, 200 rounds: Federal Gold Medal Action Pistol 147 gr (100), Federal HST 124 gr (50), Speer Gold Dot 124 gr (50)

Phase 1: Break-In

I oiled the rails and the locking block and started with American Eagle. The first magazine told me most of what I needed to know about the trigger. There’s a short take-up, a hard wall and a clean break, and the reset is short. It felt like a decent 1911, which is not something I expected to write about a 92.

Phase 2: Reliability

All 800 rounds fed, fired and ejected, across six loads from 115 to 147 gr. I didn’t clean the gun until the end. The only thing I had to adjust was me: for the first hundred rounds I kept riding the safety with my thumb the way I do on a 1911, and once that thumb brushed the slide stop and the slide closed on an empty magazine.

The red dot went on for the last two sessions. The plate bolted to the slide cut, the dot zeroed in ten rounds and it stayed put for 200.

Phase 3: Accuracy

From a rest at 25 yards with the iron sights, five-shot groups averaged 1.7 in. with Federal Gold Medal 147 gr, 2.0 in. with American Eagle 124 gr and 2.6 in. with Blazer 115 gr. The fiber optic front sight is easy to see in daylight. Our trigger gauge read 3 lb 14 oz, averaged over ten pulls.

Shooting fast is where this gun is fun. With every shot single action, my splits on a seven-yard target ran about 0.20 seconds, a good tenth quicker than I manage on the first two shots from a double action 92.

Tracking & Observations

After 800 rounds the locking block showed even wear and the Cerakote on the slide had a faint mark where the holster rubbed. Nothing came loose. The fiber optic rod stayed in place. The safety clicks on and off with a firm, positive feel, and I never bumped it on by accident.

What This Means for You

  • Reliability: No stoppages in 800 rounds.
  • Ammo Preference: 147 gr match ammunition shot best. 124 gr was close behind.
  • Accuracy Expectation: 1.7 to 2.6 in. at 25 yards from a rest.
  • Maintenance: Standard 92. Oil the rails and the locking block.
  • Upgrade Impact: Budget for the optic plate if you want a red dot. It isn’t in the box.

Performance Testing Results

Reliability (9/10)

Eight hundred rounds, six loads, no cleaning, no stoppages. The open-top 92 slide has always been good at this.

Accuracy (9/10)

A 1.7 in. group at 25 yards from a production pistol under $800 is excellent. The trigger is the reason. You aren’t fighting a double action pull on the shot that matters.

Ergonomics & Recoil (8/10)

The Vertec frame’s straight backstrap shortens the reach to the trigger. It’s still a 1.5 in. wide, 33.3 oz pistol. Recoil is soft and the gun tracks flat. The frame safety falls under the thumb and works from either side.

Fit, Finish, and Quality Control (9/10)

The gray Cerakote slide over the black frame is evenly applied, the slide runs smoothly and the controls have no slop. I found nothing to complain about.

Value (8/10)

At $969 it would be a 6. At $730 to $793 it’s an 8, and cheaper than the double action 92GTS. The optic plate being extra costs it a point.

Features (8/10)

Single action trigger, frame safety, fiber optic front sight, optics-ready slide, rail and three magazine capacities. No night sights, and no plate in the box.

Technical Deep Dive

Slide and Barrel

An open-top slide over a 4.7 in. barrel, 0.2 in. shorter than the 92FS barrel. Beretta lists the locking system as a tilting block, the same design the 92 has always used. The slide wears a gray H-Series Cerakote finish.

Frame

A Vertec-style frame, which Beretta describes as a slimmer profile, with a checkered frame, textured grip panels and an accessory rail. Beretta’s chart gives 8.5 in. overall, 5.4 in. tall and 1.5 in. wide.

Trigger System

Single action only. The hammer has to be cocked for the gun to fire, so you carry it with the hammer back and the safety on. If a round doesn’t go off, there’s no second pull: you rack the slide. For how hammer guns compare with striker guns, see striker fired vs hammer fired.

Common Problems & Solutions

  • Red dot won’t mount: The plate isn’t included. Beretta’s page says the optic and the optic plate are sold separately.
  • Slide doesn’t lock back when empty: A high thumb on the safety can touch the slide stop. Move your thumb, not the part.
  • Wrong magazine capacity: The 10, 15 and 18 round guns cost the same. Check whether the SKU ends in 920, 915 or 921.
  • Dud round: There’s no double action second strike. Tap the magazine, rack the slide and carry on.
  • Bought the wrong 92: The 92GTS looks nearly identical and is a decocker gun. Check for the word SAO in the listing.

Who Should NOT Buy This Gun

The 92XI is my favorite current 92. It still isn’t for everyone.

  • Anyone who won’t carry cocked and locked: The Beretta 92GTS gives you a double action first shot and a decocker on the same frame.
  • Buyers who want the cheapest 92: The Beretta 92FS was $649.99.
  • Shooters who want a classic single action: The Springfield SA-35 was $699.99.
  • Dedicated match shooters: The CZ Shadow 2 is 13 oz heavier, and that weight wins stages. For a match-ready 92, the Beretta 92XI Squalo comes with a magwell and 22-round magazines.

Final Verdict

The Beretta 92XI fixes the 92’s two oldest complaints and adds nothing I’d take back off. It ran 800 rounds without a stoppage, shot 1.7 in. at 25 yards and has the best trigger I’ve pulled on a factory 92.

Ignore the $969 list price. New guns were $730 to $793, with the camouflage Combat models at the bottom of that range, and at those prices the 92XI costs less than the double action 92GTS. Buy the capacity you want, budget for an optic plate if you plan to run a dot, and learn the safety. It’s a very good pistol for the money.

Final Score: 8.5/10. The 92 a lot of shooters wanted all along, at a street price well under list.

FAQ: Beretta 92XI

Is the Beretta 92XI a good gun?

Yes. Our 92XI fired 800 rounds without a stoppage, shot a 1.7 in. group at 25 yards and has a 3 lb 14 oz single action trigger. It is the best-shooting factory 92 we have tested.

What is the difference between the Beretta 92XI and the 92FS?

The 92XI is single action only with a frame-mounted safety. The 92FS is double action/single action with a slide-mounted safety and decocker. The 92XI also adds a fiber optic front sight, an optics-ready slide and a Vertec-style frame.

How much does a Beretta 92XI cost?

Beretta lists the 92XI SAO at $969. On October 2, 2026, new guns started at $729.99, with Guns.com at $733.99 for a Multicam Combat model and $792.99 for a plain 92XI.

Is the Beretta 92XI single action only?

Yes. The 92XI uses Beretta's Xtreme-S single action only trigger and is meant to be carried cocked and locked. The double action version of the same pistol is the 92GTS.

Is the Beretta 92XI optics ready?

Yes, the slide is cut for a red dot, but the optic plate is sold separately. Beretta says so on the product page.

How many rounds does the Beretta 92XI hold?

It depends on the SKU: 10, 15 or 18 rounds for the 92XI SAO, all at the same list price. The 92XI Squalo ships with 22-round magazines.

Where is the Beretta 92XI made?

In the United States. The slide on Beretta's product photos is marked Beretta U.S.A. Corp., Gallatin, TN and Made in USA.
