By Nick Hall, who wrote our AR-15 parts list and best AR-15 barrels guide.

The best AR-15 charging handle for most people is the Radian Raptor-LT. It’s fully ambidextrous, so you can rack it with either hand or blade it with your palm, and Radian lists it at $79.95. If you want to spend less, the Aero Precision BREACH does the same job with a reinforced bar and a gas deflection shelf. If you just want a bigger latch on your current setup, the Strike Industries ARCH-EL costs well under $50.

A charging handle is the cheapest upgrade that changes how an AR feels every time you run it. Below are seven, from a $19.99 mil-spec spare to $100-plus ambidextrous handles, with specs from each maker’s own page where it publishes them and live prices from our 200+ retailers checked on October 26, 2026.

Mil-Spec, Extended Latch or Ambidextrous?

Every AR-15 charging handle does the same job: you pull it back to cock the rifle and chamber a round, and a latch holds it locked into the upper. The differences are all in that latch and how you grab it.

  • Mil-spec. A small latch on the left side only. It works, but it’s small to find with a thumb, worse with gloves, and hard to reach under a low-mounted scope.
  • Extended latch. The same handle with a bigger latch on the left. Right-handed shooters can pull it with the support hand much faster. The BCM Gunfighter and Strike ARCH-EL are this type.
  • Ambidextrous. A latch on both sides, so you can rack it with either hand or blade it back with the edge of your palm. The Raptors, BREACH and Geissele are this type, and lefties should start here.

One thing to know before you rack any mil-spec handle hard from one side: Aero Precision says one-sided charging is “a pitfall for traditional mil-spec charging handles,” because all the force goes into one latch and its roll pin. Good ambidextrous designs spread that load into the body of the handle.

The Raptor-LT uses the same patented ambidextrous mechanism as the original Raptor, but Radian over-molds the 7075 aluminum handles with fiberglass-reinforced polymer to save weight and cost. You get two latches that each pull the whole handle, so you can rack it with your right hand, your left, or blade it back with the edge of your palm without looking.

On my 16-inch build with a 1-6x scope, that palm blade is the whole point. I can work the action with my support hand without breaking my firing grip, and it’s just as fast left-handed. The original Raptor is all aluminum and lists at $104.95 in more colors, but for most rifles the LT does the same work for $25 less.

Best For: Anyone who wants one ambidextrous handle that fits most AR builds and budgets.

Aero built the BREACH around a reinforced 7075-T6 bar, and its patent-pending lever mechanism sends the force of a hard one-sided pull into the head of the bar instead of the roll pins. That’s the exact failure Aero blames on mil-spec handles, so this one is built to be yanked from one side all day.

It also has a gas deflection shelf that lines up with the upper to push gas away from your face when you shoot suppressed. You pick small or large levers: small for a low profile when the rifle is slung, large for gloves. Aero lists it at $94, but street prices on the card run well below that, which is why it’s our value pick.

Best For: Suppressed rifles and shooters who charge hard from one side.

3. BCM Gunfighter Mod 4: Best Extended-Latch Charging Handle

  • Style: Extended latch on one side
  • Latch sizes: Medium (Mod 4) or large (Mod 3)
  • Ambidextrous version: BCM also makes one

Pros

  • Bigger latch, same simple design
  • Medium or large latch
  • Ambi version also sold

Cons

  • Not ambidextrous
  • Latch is left side only
  • Few trusted retailers carry it

The BCM Gunfighter is the extended-latch handle a lot of shooters start with. It keeps the simple one-latch layout of a mil-spec handle and gives you a much bigger latch to pull, sold in medium (Mod 4) and large (Mod 3) sizes. The medium latch is the middle ground between a stock latch and the big Mod 3, so it’s the one I’d pick, and it’s the one on the card.

It isn’t ambidextrous. If you’re left-handed or want to blade the handle with either palm, BCM sells an ambidextrous Gunfighter, or look at the Raptor-LT above. We couldn’t read BCM’s own spec page because its site sits behind a bot check, so check BCM directly for weights and finishes.

Best For: Right-handed shooters who want a bigger latch and nothing more.

4. Geissele Airborne Charging Handle (ACH): Best Premium Ambi Handle

Geissele’s Airborne Charging Handle is its ambidextrous AR-15 handle, sold in black and Geissele’s Desert Dirt. It ships on some of Geissele’s own complete uppers, which tells you where the company sees it. It’s the most expensive handle here on the card, so it makes most sense on a build that already wears Geissele parts.

Like BCM, Geissele keeps its site behind a bot check, so we didn’t read its spec page and haven’t listed numbers we couldn’t confirm.

Best For: Geissele builds and buyers who want a premium ambidextrous handle.

Radian made the Raptor-SL for shooters who need “an ultra low-profile, anti-snag design.” It’s the same ambidextrous Raptor mechanism with slimmer wings, which matters under a low-mounted scope and on a rifle that rides on a sling against your chest all day.

The trade is that slim wings give you less to grab, especially with gloves. Radian lists it only in the AR15/M16 size. If you shoot suppressed, Radian also makes a Raptor-SD version, and our suppressor guide explains why gas in the face is a problem.

Best For: Scoped rifles and slung carbines where wide wings get in the way.

The ARCH-EL is a forged 7075-T6 handle with a larger aluminum latch. Strike says an aluminum latch won’t wear your receiver as fast as a steel one. For under $50 it fixes the main complaint about a mil-spec handle, the tiny latch.

Two things to check. Strike says the ARCH-EL is “not guaranteed to be compatible with Anderson MFG Upper Receivers,” so Anderson owners should pick something else. And the trusted price on the card is the standard ARCH, which has the small latch and lists at $35.95, so make sure the listing says Extended Latch if that’s what you want.

Best For: A cheap, real improvement over a stock handle.

Sometimes you just need a charging handle. The PSA mil-spec handle is forged 7075-T6, made in America and $19.99. It’s the right buy for a budget build, a spare in the range bag, or a second upper. For anything you’ll run hard or shoot with a scope, spend a bit more on one of the handles above.

Best For: Budget builds and spare parts kits.

How to Install an AR-15 Charging Handle

  • Unload the rifle, remove the magazine and check the chamber.
  • Push out the rear takedown pin and tip the upper open, then slide the bolt carrier back and out.
  • Pull the charging handle back until its lugs line up with the cutout in the upper, and lift it out.
  • Put the new handle in the same way, slide it forward, reinstall the bolt carrier and close the rifle.
  • Function check: rack it, make sure the latch locks it closed, and test the safety before you load.

It takes about two minutes and no tools. If the handle feels gritty afterward, check that the gas key on the bolt carrier is riding in the channel. Our AR-15 parts list shows where it sits.

How I Picked These Charging Handles

I picked one handle for each common need: an all-round ambidextrous pick, a value ambi with suppressor features, a simple extended latch, a premium ambi, a low-profile handle for scopes, a budget latch upgrade and a cheap spare. Specs come from the makers’ own pages where we could read them, BCM and Geissele specs are left out because their sites blocked us, and prices come from our live price check across 200+ retailers on October 26, 2026. For more upgrades, see our best AR-15 parts and accessories and best AR-15 foregrips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AR-15 charging handle?

For most people, the Radian Raptor-LT. It is fully ambidextrous, made from 7075 aluminum with polymer over-molded handles, and lists at $79.95. The Aero Precision BREACH is the best value ambidextrous handle, and the Strike Industries ARCH-EL is the best budget upgrade.

Is an ambidextrous charging handle worth it?

Yes, if you are left-handed, run a scope, or want to rack the rifle with your support hand. An ambidextrous handle has a latch on both sides, so you can pull it with either hand or blade it back with your palm.

What is a gas busting charging handle?

A handle designed to push gas away from your face, which matters most with a suppressor. The Aero Precision BREACH has a gas deflection shelf that lines up with the upper receiver for this.

Do AR-15 charging handles fit AR-10 rifles?

No. AR-10 rifles need an AR-10 size handle. The Radian Raptor-LT and Aero Precision BREACH both come in AR-10 sizes, but an AR-15 handle will not fit an AR-10 upper.

Why do mil-spec charging handles break?

Aero Precision says one-sided charging is a pitfall for traditional mil-spec charging handles. Pulling hard on one side puts all the force into one latch and its roll pin. Reinforced ambidextrous designs send that force into the body of the handle.

What is the best cheap AR-15 charging handle?

The PSA mil-spec charging handle at $19.99 is the cheapest good spare. For a real upgrade on a budget, the Strike Industries ARCH-EL adds a larger aluminum latch for $46.95 list.

Which charging handle is best with a scope?

A low-profile handle you can reach under the eyepiece. The Radian Raptor-SL has slim-line ambidextrous handles that Radian built for an ultra low-profile, anti-snag fit, and the Aero BREACH comes with small levers.

How do you install an AR-15 charging handle?

Unload the rifle, open the upper, slide out the bolt carrier, pull the charging handle back until its lugs line up with the cutout and lift it out. Put the new one in the same way, reinstall the bolt carrier and function check it.
